Tool Review: GRS Microblock XL

I set a lot of stones and I needed a more secure way to hold them. I decided to try out the GRS Microblock XL and I was not disappointed. I'll show you what is included and how I use this ball vise to bezel set a stone in a ring.

Hi! Thanks so much for showing me how you use yours! Just got mine today and cannot wait to get started! I purchased the smaller one and got the extras. Didn’t see any differences between yours and the one I bought other than the fact that you got an extra base. Otherwise they were exactly alike.

If you look at the stone setters kit you’ll see what the black cap headed screws are for…There are three threaded holes in the top of each jaw…👍

Hi, do you recommend this one or the Microblock? I’m mainly using this for stonesetting pave etc. Will the XL be more stable while putting pressure on it? (Dont have an airgraver)

So sorry for the late reply. I like the XL because it is about 3 lbs heavier and comes with a rubber base as well as the plastic base. The rubber base helps keep it in place better than the plastic one. Because of that, I believe the XL will give you more stability. Hope this helps!

That is a bummer! It's likely a common size if you happen to have a set of allen wrenches, but have you tried contacting the supplier where you purchased it to see if you can get them to send one?

I bought the same set on ebay for 85 dollars. the only thing it didn't come with was the thermo lock. it is grs but it doesn't spin smoothly

For that price, I wonder if it is a knock-off GRS or maybe it was previously used? I'm always leary when there is such a price discrepancy. I'm sure this will still work well for you though. Having the thermo-loc really makes it easy to secure those pieces that don't fit well within the pins. I often use the thermo-loc when setting stones in pendants and it makes life so much easier!

Is there a way to make the ball stay still to hammer set a bezel?

The ball will naturally move on the base. One base is rubber and one base is plastic. There is less movement on the rubber one, but if you are hammering, I'm not sure of a way to make the ball completely stationary.
