Tips And Comments:
- Playing Technique:
Played with a pick between the two pickups, middle strength applied (some parts need to be louder and dynamic). All knobs at full (except for the volume swells in the solo, in that part i let the neck pickup open and do the swell with that knob)
- Gear Sound:
Lots of high middle frequencies. A good amount of bass. Compression required. For the solo and distorted part i used a wah wah pedal, whammy (or octaver), delay, and distortion (in that order, just software emulation)
- About The Song:
Rhythms are complex, but the time signatures are not. Try to maintain the beat while playing. It will help you a lot.
Hammer-ons in the intro must be aggressive in order to make every note sound properly
The solo must be played tapping the notes at the time time you do a volume swell with the bass knob. Notes must be tapped with lots of strength and accuracy.

I'll tell you a really good way to get your head around that, being a bass player myself. That's because it's a different time signature than you're used too, so a full note has a different length altogether. It's not you or your ability, it's what you're used too. The best advice I ever got from my teacher was to get a snare and a hi hat even, some practice pads, or an electronic drum kit and get a book on beginners 'syncopation'. If you can read tablature you will be able to read drum music. Go through the book. It will take you through different time signatures and make them completely normal. You will feel comfortable playing any time signature at any tempo, I promise this works a treat if you just put that little bit of time in to try a different angle. (And when I say go through the book, I mean with drum sticks, not your bass guitar. Play it however it feels naturally with a metronome so you don't speed up or slow down. You can even practice sitting just in front of the beat for that frantic feel, or sit just behind the beat for that kind of laid back, chill reggae feel- IF you feel like getting all fancy schmancy). Cheers

@@ofsinope If you cut apart the song, the guitar and bass are played in 3/4 or 6/8, however you want to look at it, while the drums are in 4/4, which the singer follows. That's what's tripping this person up, holding a 3/4 rhythm over a 4/4 beat.

This is seriously nit picking here but at 1:37 on the second bar of the pattern if you listen closely, instead of hitting the 13th on the low D the first hit is actually on the 12th. But the second hit is on the 13th. So itd be 0-10-0-0-12 Rest 0-10-0-0-13 Rest 0-10. Different timing scared me too but it's just a matter of a lot of practice because you need to make your brain comfortable with listening to this and picking it at the same time. @kahwigulum
@kahwigulum 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think this is correct. With good headphones and when filtering all except the bass frequencies, I can't hear the A there. I think it's an open D string on the bottom for all four notes. Despite being in A minor (what is basically the relative minor key of C major), the note A does not appear to be used in this song.

Great instructional. I see one place that's off. When the intro "like" riff begins on the dropped D the pattern isn't the same. It's the second part of the riff that changes, to 0-10' 0-0-12/-0,0-10' 0-0-12//-0-10 next it's 0-10'0-0-12//-0-10'0-013// -0-10then 0-10'0-013//-0-10'0-0-13//-0-10, besides that It's pretty much spot on. Don't get me wrong, I love your tutorials and mean no disrespect/ Just a fellow bassist. Peace ' = pull off // = Caesura

John Dean You're right, I noticed that. It's a very sneaky thing. I've wondered if JC was just hitting the wrong note.

John Dean I'd like to think it was an intentional thing, it adds just that extra hint of progression to the verse's intensity.

Might I suggest that these videos would be better viewed with the camera from your left side instead of your right? The fretting hand being closer than the picking hand would make it easier to see. As it is now, the fretting hand is in the further background and all we see of your picking hand is the back of it, not the fingers themselves.

I just realized: I'm making music for 15 years now, I read sheet music along to symphonies. But I cannot read tabs :facepalm: Let me guess: the horizontal lines represent the strings, the numbers the finger position (0 is empty); the rythm under the line. Darn inconvenient. What about different tuning? What about poor brass players, like me, who don't now a thing about guitars? =(
@CoverSolutions
@CoverSolutions 9 жыл бұрын
GeFlixes Well, tablature is mostly a guitarist restricted convenient form of reading music. It was actually invented centuries ago . I can read sheet music but i think tabs are a great popular form of playing along easily. You are actually getting it right, that's the form of reading it
@GeFlixes
@GeFlixes 9 жыл бұрын
CoverSolutions "You are actually getting it right" -- How many points do I receive? :D But for standard guitars, it must be really convenient. I means, I read, like 4 different clefs: a. Treble clef , B flat notation, instrument B flat sounding (means: I play a C when there's a C on paper, sounds like a B flat), b. Bass clef, C notation, B flat sounding, but you're TALKING in C (meaning: C on paper, you name it C, it sounds like C, you're PLAYING a D on the instrument - the same principle as no. 1, but in reverse). And of course plain old Treble and Bass-clef like every other pianist. Occacionally, I get double bass or cello parts - don't even open THAT can of worms... Transponating instruments are a pain in the ass (Tuba, trombone, baritone). 'play a G please' - 'playing, or sounding' -- every fricking time. So I envy guitarists and tab notation ;)

Dude you should try drum tab, each line represents a different voice (like snare, hats whatever) but there's no universal set up so have to try and remember which line donates what while playing off the tab and often there's nothing on the bottom to show rhythm as different voices play different and simultaneously. It's confusing
