Lyrics:
We listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rise to the height of our halo.
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
None of us have actually been there,
Not like you...
Ignorant siblings in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.
But enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated your little piece of the divine?
And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me;
I'm gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home ...
Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down,
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun,
Other than tremble incessantly?
High is the way, but our eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.
You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"
Give me my...
Give me my...
Give me my!
Give me my!
Give me my!
Give me my!
Give me my!
Give me my wings!
You are the light and way that they will only read about.
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.
Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion, but,
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home.

I’m 34 and dieing of emphysema, I survived 19,000 volts three times in a work accident and lost both my legs. It doesn’t matter that I’m dieing, All that matters is how I’ve lived… I have lived for you.. for me… for every soul… Tool put me on a journey through life of selflessness…. For 16 years I’ve lived every day, sometimes my own life, sometimes vicariously through others…. I’ve seen joy and beauty, I’ve seen death violence and evil, It only made me stronger…. I love you all you beautiful bastards! I’m not scared of dieing, I’m scared of not living…. Thankyou tool you’ve helped make my short life more than worth it! I love you all!

I don't really listen to this song for the lyrics but for the way Maynard sings them. Crooning, mumbling, accusing, demanding, declaring, comforting, assuring. It's a personal send-up to his mother. His contempt for religion is still present, but he plays it as an appeal for his mother. “If God exists then she is more deserving of heaven than any of us.” Even if you don't know the backstory, you know there is something he is putting his whole self into--it's important to him, and so as a listener it becomes important to me.

I get the same vibe from this. Different from Judith you can tell there’s more respect for her religious views while creating a song she would be proud of. Ultimately most do want to make our parents proud. With my mom passing recently Ive listened to this song in a different way. You mention the different tones & variations Maynard projects seems to correlate to the “grieving process”

English isnt my native language. I read about the story behind the song. And I always thought it was some kind of blaming "god" or the believe in it (since tool is known as an atheistic group and Maynard anti god opinion comes from the fact that his mother was hard religious, even when she suffered in the life on earth) but when I read your comment I looked far more into the lyrics. And the song is a homage to his mother clearly. And it shows that he doesn't have to believe in the same things as his mother, to accept and love and miss her.

When Maynard sings “daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence; difficult to see you in this light” I immediately picture him in the hospital room as his mother is taking her last breaths. I imagine he is holding her hand and speaking to her; suggesting what she might say when she gets to the gates of heaven. Incredibly touching and unbelievably heart wrenching.

Back in ‘06 I was driving from Salt Lake back to Bozeman and was listening to this entire song and I can almost for certain tell you that I must have had a very similar experience to Maynard. It was around 5 and All I could see was the lyric “Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence’ It’s EXACTLY what I was experiencing I actually pulled off the highway drove up some hill and literally watched this ‘daylight dimming’ I was so moved by the situation that I’ve never forgotten it. But for sure the way northern Utah is with all those factories and the toxic smoke literally does something to that light in the winter evening sunset.. It’s where I believe part of the lyrics come from God Bless 🙏🏻

My mum passed away January 31 this year. I’m 27 and I just realized that I had just barely over 10, 000 days with her. (10, 064 to be exact.) The last lines in this song hit hard. They’ve always been haunting to me but now even more so obviously. She was a big Tool fan, specifically of this album. Her name is even incredibly close to Marie. Love you mum.

I think it's about the loss of his mother.(Marie) Its the Building of anger I don't get - the title 10,000 days - is that the age of the mother or days grieving. Because the anger subsides overtime when grieving not increases. Time heals as they say. 30 yrs is a long time to grieve. Though it's a young age to lose your Mother. This song transcends mortal music. It's sound is a deep incantation. It's lyrics a prayer, marred with guilt. An ethereal track, that stands the test of time, akin to Judith Marie's faith in a god that Maynard chose to turn his back to. In spite of his relationship with Judith's god, this song sees him become an inquisitor of those he perceives to be of lesser faith than her. Absolutely magical.

My grandmother died today. I was her favorite. She was the kindest human being I ever knew. Didn't deserve any of the many things she did for me. Covid prevented me from seeing her before it was too late. Was heartbroken when I walked into her hospital room and she was gone. Don't take your loved ones for granted. Do everything you can for them. You never know when heaven will lift them out. RIP Mary Jane Tennpenny 9/9/20 I will always love you...

How do you even make music like this? It flows so naturally from beginning to end, it feels as if I'm guided by my hand. It captures both me and my essence whole, swallows it and doesn't let go until the last note is played and the last word spoken.

This is literally one of my favorite Tool songs next to "Jambi", "Disposition", "Reflection" , "right in two" and the rest of MJK's other projects. But whenever I listen to A Perfect CIrcle's "Judith", "orestes","passive", and Tool's " The Patient" and " Wings of Marie 1 and 2", it blows my mind that MJK and his respective bandmates made these five songs that when listened to in that chronological order perfectly describes what The Five STages of Grief is like in musical form. I listened to this song when My cat Kit Cat passed way along with a friend of mine who also passed away. I always tear up with this song. Helped me through a lot of dark times. I'm just glad that everyone who is a genuine Tool fan, and new found fans can all come together to experience the journey to the newest album, and experiencing one of the few artists that have a genuine sound thats one of a kind to them. #spiralout
