In this, my first Makita 40v XGT Tool Review, I take a look at the GA005G 125mm Angle Grinder, (5" Grinder). We will go through the specs and compare performance against the Makita 18v LXT counter part.
The Makita XGT 40v Grinder is not yet available to some regions of the world unfortunately, including the United States so some of the below links may not work for everybody.

It's so nice to see someone reviewing Makita tools. KZfaq has become a battleground between Dewalt and Milwaukee basically flooding the channels with shills and fanboi tool reviews with little from the other major tool brands. Don't get me wrong, I own a lot of Milwaukee and Dewalt tools from this year dating all the way back to the mid 90s and they're great. But no tool manufacturer makes the best of everything and it's nice to get some competition. The Makita tools I do own are flawless and I appreciate seeing more from this great company.

Bought the drill set a week ago. First impressions I am truly impressed. Used it to build a deck over the weekend and had 1 bar of charge left on both drills after laying 140lm of hardwood decking into hardwood joists. The strip feature on the drill is also better andimproved for stainless steel screws. I had 3 total stripped screws in close to 600 screws, significantly better than previously. Also both pre drills and sinks screws noticeably faster than my 18v set too.

I really want to see the drill’s electronic clutch in action. Having to move over to Makita (Milwaukee or Dewalt would have been just as appropriate) to get the large cordless options for my job, that’s the one thing I’ve really missed about the German stuff I keep at home. Festool, Metabo, Fein, and even Bosch (although a different method) have been doing it for ages.

I think the o-ring you showed is there to stop guard from rattling. I have a cordless Metabo grinder with a similar guard design, and I added an o-ring when my Metabo’s guard started rattling. I don’t know if the Metabo originally had an o-ring that failed or if the guard just got looser as its paint wore off, but the grinder was really annoying to use with the guard shaking back and forth. I guess it is a cheap design, but it is easy to throw a new o-ring on if the one on the grinder disappears. Also, thanks for the video.

having used both the only drawback on 40V is that they have more inertia so it takes longer to stop compared with 18V and this bores me a little. But the power, man, it's comparable with a 1400W grinder at same speed, lot of tork and since have some models with variable speed I can use premium discs from Pferd and Klingspor in their correct speed what make a huge difference in performance and finishing surfaces.

An 8ah battery for this is the 16ah equivalent of 18v. Look at the Watthours, a 40vMax 2.5ah is exactly the same as a 5ah 18v. But obviously, the 40v grinder has more power so it drain the batt slightly faster.

Here in Brazil they have been priced similarly. For example, the DHP481 drill costs the same as the new 40v drill right now (05/11/2020) on many stores. HOWEVER, the kits are considerably more expensive on the 40v line. Usually those kits with the tool, 2 batteries, a charger and a mak-pac cost 2x the price of the bare tool, but on the 40v line they cost something like 2.5 to 3x the cost of the bare tool.

You know I happened to be browsing aliexpress yesterday over something else not-related to this. And came across these Chinese 'battery shell kits' for the makita 18v. That have everything except for the lithium cells. So that you can source your own and ensure that they are of a high quality. Rather than buying a complete Chinese battery and not knowing if the cells inside them are any good or not. Well here is my point: there is a batter kit now available for 9ah 18v. So I was just wondering if it could be make any difference to the resulting power output of a tool like this. My question is whether the current draw is being limited by the battery or the tool. Because over here in the UK when have checked prices last month they seem to be charging thru the nose for these new Makita 40v line. And really the higher power output seems to be the main benefit. At least for the 40v tools we have seen so far.
@dreamcat4
@dreamcat4 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I have checked prices again now. And actually this angle grinder specifically is priced competitively. Compared to the 18v ones. The bare tool is, not necessarily the other accessories. As far as I can tell the main feature it seems to be lacking is variable speed. Which is a shame but they will probably release other versions and introduce that feature in other models.
@dreamcat4
@dreamcat4 3 жыл бұрын
... Hey there is a 40v with variable speed already! However I am not sure if you can also get the x-lock quick release in the same tool. They have way too many different versions on the makita website and the specs of each product are just copy pasted exactly the same. So there is no way ATM to see or find out what the differences are between them.
@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL

Do you have any comperisone with LXT36? If it exist?
@ccadama
@ccadama 3 жыл бұрын
@Mats Andersson. Makita calls it their LXT X2 18V line. The tools take two 18V batteries. So the question is whether there is any real difference between the 40V MAX or the X2? If you have a bunch of 18V batteries, is there a real difference going 40V MAX (which is really 36V). Like Dewalt calling their 18V line the 20V MAX.
@dreamcat4
@dreamcat4 3 жыл бұрын
@@ccadama Today I looked at some of these and its hard to say for sure because they have so many different versions. But my impression was that: for smaller disc sizes of 125 and less, then there is no 36v x2 option. And for the larger diameter 36v x2 products, none of them seem to have the x-lock quick release feature. Unless there was a product I missed or wasnt being displayed there, or has not been released / updated yet. This is also why I mentioned the 9ah battery kit in my other comment. For these smaller sized 18v ones. That take a single battery only.
@ccadama

@@dreamcat4 Thanks for the info. I don't own any cordless angle grinders (I've got Makita's 7" corded grinder) and you've done a great job looking into what Makita offers in the X2 18V line of grinders. I wasn't aware that the 40V MAX Makita uses X-Lock. I think the X2 Makita grinders came out before X-Lock was put out by Bosch. In this demo video, both Makita grinders use traditional lock nuts for the grinder wheels. I just hope Makita doesn't get rid of their 18V line and just expand their 40V MAX line. I guess it's a toss up whether Makita will expand their X2 line or just hold onto what they've got now. I know some people don't like using two batteries on one tool. What I do like is that Makita has kept their charger line simple for the longest time selling single bay or dual bay simultaneous fan cooled rapid chargers with their kits (Makita also sells a four port sequential charger and included a standard charger in some kits over the past Christmas holiday). Dewalt is insane with the number of 18V chargers they sell (they usually include the cheapest charger in their kits unless you buy one of their more expensive 20 MAX or 60V MAX tools). Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
@dreamcat4
@dreamcat4 3 жыл бұрын
@@ccadama I have been thinking about the x-lock some more. Perhaps it is because x-lock is only available on smaller diameter tools. (at least the inner diameter, where the disk attaches to, of course you might still be able to get over sized disks if you take the guard off). If that is the case then it would explain why there is no x-lock on the x2 (36v) makita ones because they only make those ones for larger diameter discs. It is 'unclear' ATM if x-lock is on the new 40v angle grinder. But really there should be. I cannot think of a reason why not. I just cannot find any information yet as to *which* model numbers it apples to. Because there are so many models and the all look pretty much the same as each other.
@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL
@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL 3 жыл бұрын
Did you watch the video Dreamcat? It's not 'unclear' if the 40v grinders have x-lock, it is plain for all to see in the video. I talk about most of the things you have commented on in the video. There is no 40v x-lock, there will no doubt be in the future. When they designed these tools (which are already a year old as they were released in Japan first) Makita did not have the rights to use X-lock. All the 18v x2 tools were made well before x-lock was available for Makita X-lock is a technology they had to buy from Bosch. That is why most grinders don't have it. The newest Makita 18v 125mm grinder has it. None of the others. This video shows what the Makita versions of 18v vs 18v x2 grinders are kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jb-EfZlzmt2un4E.html

I must say that grinder is really impressive! High draw tools probaly benefit the most from the higher voltage and higher output of the 21700 cells. If you can get your hand on a 2.5 ah 40v, then please compare the 4 and 2.5 ah against each other with the grinder, because the 2.5 ah uses 18650 cells.

I was about to say this same thing...a 2.5Ah XGT is the same total energy as the 5Ah LXT. The “rant” is merited but that direct comparison would also still be very informative. Pretty sure the XGT would still win though...it just crushed the LXT on this one.

I feel like some of the stuff makita wanted to accomplish with the 40v line could have been done with a larger battery using 21700 cells and in some cases an x2 platform. Use the potential up coming 60v battery for larger stuff. Unless they want to forgo the 60v battery.
@dreamcat4
@dreamcat4 3 жыл бұрын
This is a good observation because some tools benefit from being more compact. And the 40v adds a bit of extra weight and bulk. This difference is more aparrent in the smaller types of tool. Also I am potentially interested in this new 60v. Because the advantage of more powerful DC motor should be increased further. And you know... for stuff like gardening equipment too it makes sense. Yeah makita didnt necessarily need to move to 40v purely for the sake of 21700 cells. So i gues maybe there is still a possibility they could introduce new 21700 battery packs for the existing 18v format. If the 40v series is a commercial failure and does not sell enough / gets rejected by the consumers. However makita also being a professional brand for contracters i somehow doubt this will happen. Still it makes more sense to skip 40v is there is going to be a 60v. Even more powerful for these types of tools. But especially also those contractor grade tools you see on building sites. For dealing with concrete and also your chainsaws. Other bigger stuff When 18v is already appears to be good enough for the smaller tools. But we shall see! Because we have not got to know the other ones yet. Hmm.

@@dreamcat4 There was a patent for a makita 18v battery using 21700 cells about 3 years ago, maybe 2. Have not heard anything since. I think the 40v will be an error in the long run. Unless makita is committed to the 40v and does not want to go ahead with the 60v too many platform, makita should have focused on 12v cxt 18v lxt, x2 and 21700 cells 60v for commercial ope, construction equipment, snowblowers, tillers, etc

This would be cool if Makita drops the prices on the 18’s. Why would I (as an old geezer) want anything heavier just because it is a little faster? If I was a young contractor then yup but for old geez keeping house and land going, 18 and 36 works just fine for me.

The brake not working if you run out of Batts is an issue. They should fix that. The only reason why I went cordless on both my 125mm and 230mm grinders is because of the electric brake which the corded models don't possess? I would rather run less and charge more than not having the break. Gammon Makita we are invested

"back to school" is too coarse an expression to use for the many who watch your videos, some even with pertinent doubts. Regarding the batteries, you should use the 18V 5Ah battery (which has better performance than the 18V 6Ah battery, the CDR of the cells is higher) than the 40V 2.5Ah battery for performance tests since both use the same cells; and for autonomy tests continue to use the highest-charged batteries on each platform. I still don't want you to "go back to school".

You can't compare the 6Ah 18V Battery with the 40V 4Ah battery! The 3Ah 18650 cells are not as powerful as the 4Ah 21700. I tested some 18V batteries with 3Ah cells and they had not the maximum power than the 2.5Ah cells. I also expect that two 2,5Ah batteries in parallel are more powerful than one 21700.

Wieners is a word, as is winners and also weaners. Google verified. If you type "contact wieners" in google, the first result is the contact page of Wienerschnitzel.com. The only way I see how that can relate to a 40V makita grinder is, if there's an extension for meat grinding.
