In Part 2, Dr. Adams delves into the topic of hemochromatosis expertise and your doctor.
The Canadian Hemochromatosis Society was pleased to host Dr. Paul Adams on July 14, 2020 in the second lecture in its Membership Lecture Series. Dr. Adams addressed the common conundrum, "Why am I never on the same page as my doctor about hemochromatosis?"
Dr. Paul Adams, MD, FRCP(C)-Professor of Medicine, Western University, London, Ontario, has a special research interest in the study of genetic hemochromatosis. He has previously been the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology (2005-2010) and the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology at Western (2007-2017). He has been funded continuously by the National Institute of Health (Bethesda, MD) for the past 19 years. He currently has 344 publications including papers in the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Lancet. He has received the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 2010 he received the Gold Medal from the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver and the Canadian Liver Foundation. In October 2013 he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship with Distinction from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland for lifetime research contributions to the field of hemochromatosis. He has an honorary Fellowship from the American Association for the Study of the Liver (AASLD 2014). In 2019, he received the Marcel Simon Award presented in Heidelberg,Germany (May 2019) for lifetime research achievement in hemochromatosis, and the Canadian Liver Foundation 50th Anniversary Gold Medal. He is the CASL Visiting Professor for 2019.
Thank you Dr. Adams and Canadian Hemochromatosis Society members and supporters for making this presentation possible.

I think its important to point out a couple of fallacies of logic in what the Dr. presents about the "benefits" of HFE genes. The reality is that moderately increased iron IS beneficial for various reasons including athletic performance... having one copy of C282Y could assist in that. It could also be that even a 20 some year old with 2 copies might have decent athletic performance ... because they're 20 and haven't started accumulating iron in excess in the body! Also, the Dr. says "don't even talk about NTBI"... he's not interested.... how is that a science-based mindset? "Nobody has died from NTBI"... i think this is part of why hemochromatosis patients have such a problem with Drs' take on the condition... because Drs don't have the condition, don't experience the serious nature of the fatigue/degeneration, and all they focus on is morbidity statistics. Morbidity and wellness are not the same thing.

Can you comment on the treating hemochromatosis on iron chelators such as ferriprox as this has been what my doctor told me to do as my ferritin is around 4000. Any studies whether there is any difference of taking this long term medications as to delay iron overload complications vs potential complications of iron chelators?

What if you have high Tsat, high ferritin, and no inflammation, even with a CRP and sedimentation rate test?
