"The birdcage" is probably the most underrated movie ever. Not just Nathan is incredible, but the rest of the cast! Not to mention the script, cinematography, music, everything!!!

Julie Delphy and Ethan Hawke were definitely snubbed for Before Sunrise.

The biggest Oscar snub for me of all time is Ellen Burstyn in " Requiem for a Dream". I know she was nominated and this list is a little different, but seriously. Anybody who knows that performance knows she deserved the Oscar.

Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday in Tombstone WUZ ROBBED! His performance was beyond sublime. I wish I could meet him to tell him so.

Without a doubt, the ultimate snub was John Candy, for planes, trains and automobiles. An incredible comedic and dramatic turn. I think part of the problem was, he was a lead? But there were two leads? Not really sure, but, nobody else could’ve played that role. The scene of Steve Martin berating him in the hotel room is one of my fondest film memories. I was 10 years old when I saw that in the theaters, and I started to well up. I would have nominated him over Jack Nicholson in Ironweed. Probably would not have beaten out Michael Douglas for Wall Street, but, it would have been wonderful to see the nomination.

Looking back at the Oscars in the 90s, it's interesting to reflect on some notable snubs. One performance that immediately comes to mind is Drew Barrymore's captivating portrayal in 'Ever After.' You are spot on with a lot of these. Pfeiffer's Catwoman was the female performance of that year and the consolation nomination was the underwhelming Love Field doesn't cut it. Williams was perfection as Mrs. Doubtfire (seriously try to imagine someone else in that role and you can't), so his snub is inexcusable. Plus I hate that Oscar voters ignore performers who hit their heights in comedy until they do a drama and then they throw an award at them for the "stretch". As if doing comedy is easy! Lane stole The Birdcage and it was a huge hit both critical and at the box office, so no idea what they were thinking there. The fact that Gooding (who has proven to be a one trick pony) won and Lane didn't get a nomination says it all. I don't think there is anything to add to your views on Jamie Lee Curtis - well said. And yes - Nicholson's overrated performance (and Hoffman's as well for that year) could have been left off. DiCaprio was amazing and a revelation to a lot of people in Titanic. He beautifully played a larger than life character (very difficult) and the film rested on his performance. By contrast, Nicholson gave the same performance he had been giving in nearly every film for the last decade and did anyone really believe the Nicholson/Hunt relationship in that film? And yes - Nicholson rocked About Schmidt - a far better performance.

Nathan Lane would have won NOW these days! And agree he deserved a nom back then. Wonderful performance.

Pam Grier was robbed! I was only 6 when that movie came out but watching all those years later it angers me that they snubbed Pam Grier from Jackie Brown one of the best performances tarantino directed in my opinion. Ps so glad you gave the 10 spot to Drew Barrymore - I feel as that movie and performances goes on with age, it deserved a nomination.

I find it hard to believe that Anthony Hopkins in "The Remains of the Day" is the one you'd take out . I think he deserved to win, and it was a pretty strong year. Neeson, Day-Lewis, and Fishburne were outstanding as well. Hanks deserved the Oscar he won for Forrest Gump the following year but the win for Philadelphia was more about honoring the character he played (and the fact that Hopkins and Day-Lewis were both recent winners).

I have always said that Reese should have won or at least been nominated for Election (hell, maybe even Freeway), over Walk the Line. Felicity Huffman should have won that year, period.

Jack Lemmon's "Best Actor" snub for "Glengarry Glen Ross" has never sat well with me. It was a gorgeous performance and a beautiful bookend to a fabulous career. Pacino got an understandable supporting nod for his flashy performance in that film and was double-nominated that year, winning for the woeful "Scent of a Woman" over the far more deserving Denzel in the outrageously under-nominated "Malcolm X" (both Delroy Lindo and Al Freeman Jr. could have easily received supporting nods for that one).

Hey Brian, what do you think about Madonna's "Evita"? To this day I still believe she should've been nominated for it. We all know she is not the best actress out there, but she has some gems here and there like "Desperately Seeking Susan", "A league if their own", "Dangerous game" and she was brilliant in "Evita" and I think she deserved a nomination at the Oscars.

I remember seeing Boogie Nights for the first time and being blow away by Mark Wahlberg’s Performance. I think his Marky Mark days hurt his chances at a Oscar nom for that performance because it was in academy voters recent memory but I’ve always looked at that as his real arrival in Hollywood.

I completely agree with you on the nominations for AGAIG! I saw it many years later and even though Jack Nicholson is clearly an icon, I didn't understand the hype. I understood it even less for Helen Hunt 😬

1) Mimi Rogers' astonishing performance in '91's searing "The Rapture" is gritty, complex, nuanced and revelatory. The ending alone where she faces off with GOD, yes THE GOD will make you question your faith. 2) Joan Cusack's darkly subversive comedic turn in 93's"Family Adams Values" runs rings around veteran scene stealers like Carol Kane, Angelica Houston and Raul Julia. "MAhhliBU... Bahrbieee!"

Wesley Snipes was also robbed with Too Wong Foo. His performance as Noxxy was so incredibly subtle but rang true. Important note: I have seen TWFTFEJN hundreds of times. That film should have had more attention at awards shows.

Excellent video. Love how you highlighted so many performances that got snubbed due to obvious genre or performer bias. Your reasoning for Drew Barrymore in Scream is why I think Alicia Silverstone in Clueless would have been an interesting nomination as well. An iconic performance that she committed to 100% and actually won Funniest Actress at the American Comedy Awards & Breakthrough Performance at the National Board Of Review, plus that movie at the very least deserved a Screenplay nom (WGA nom, & win at National Society Of Film Critics). Madonna in Evita, J.Lo in Selena, and Val Kilmer in The Doors would have been good biopic performance noms. I totally agree with Pam Grier's performance, she is dynamite and a big part of the reason as to why Jackie Brown holds up so well, same with Nathan Lane in The Birdcage. I'd have given Robin Williams a nod in The Birdcage as well as Mrs. Doubtfire, the latter one of his comedic peaks in acting and the former a great mixture of drama and comedy much like in The Fisher King. Jim Carrey was amazing in The Truman Show and I was surprised that even SAG didn't recognize him there. Another excellent video as per usual. ❤

I love everything about The Birdcage, especially Nathani Lane's acting/character. There's just something so cozy, intimate, and charming about the movie. Also, Michelle Pheifrer's scene when she's making the catsuit out of a raincoat from her closet is the best.

I think the recent win for Jamie Lee Curtis was, more or less, one of those "we're sorry it's taken so long...here's your award for everything that we should've acknowledged along the way".

The original French movie that inspired The Birdcage, called La Cage aux Folles, made a much bigger impact at the Oscars when it came out in 1979 (director, costumes, adapted screenplay). Perhaps, by 1996 the impact of that type of role had just worn out. I mean the Academy had previously nominated Jack Lemon, Dustin Hoffman and William Hurt for doing female drag, and Hurt actually won.

For me, it's probably Juliette Binoche in Three Colours: Blue. I think she won an oscar for the English patient, but I like this performance waaaay more. I know, it's a foreign film and all, but that was a truly good performance. (I think the film came out in 1993).

Agreeing with most of these picks. Meryl, Barrymore and Pfeiffer were positive surprises on this list. However, you forgot one of the best performances of all time: Matt Damon in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999). He plays a character, who then plays another character and impersonates another one before reverting to his true self in the end. INSANE! Granted 1999 was stacked. That films like "Election", "Being John Malkovich", "Fight Club", "The Iron Giant", "Drop Dead Gorgeous", "Girl, Interrupted" and even "Go!" were shut out from most categories shows that this was a strong year. But "Cider House Rules"? I mean seriously?

I've had a theory for a while that DiCaprio was snubbed for Titanic because of this ingrained snobbery about celebrity persona- Leomania was so nuts that I can see Academy members looking at all the Tiger Beat covers that year and not being able to mentally square that with an Oscar nomination. Plus, he already had a reputation for partying and I wonder if that played into it too. I'm also glad to hear that I'm not the only one who is mystified at As Good as It Gets being so lauded. I would have LOVED to see Courtney Love on an Oscar campaign. That would have been something to see. Hot take: Carrey should have also been nominated for Liar Liar I would include Val Kilmer in Tombstone, River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho, Kirsten Dunst in Interview with the Vampire, and Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping. Kilmer definitely was crowded out in 1993, as the Supporting Actor category that year was ridiculously packed, but I would have substituted him for either Postlethwaite or Malkovich that year. (Also, I would have loved seeing two of the most quotable, delightful film performances of all time go head to head: Doc Holliday and Samuel Gerard). For Phoenix, I would have swapped out Nolte (personally, as much as I love Streisand, The Prince of Tides never really grabbed me but I seem to be in the minority in this). For Dunst, I would have swapped out one of the Bullets Over Broadway performances. For Bullock... oh hell, I just saw the list for Best Actress that year... damn.....maybe swap out Sarandon? That's a tough one. But that movie at any rate should have been more lauded, the screenplay especially. Also, two of the best "face-acting" performances I've seen were in the 90s- Jodhi May in Last of the Mohicans (she was barely in the movie but my god, those facial expressions in her last scene...) and Alan Rickman in Sense and Sensibility. Just a thought and I don't know if this topic is on your radar- why isn't there an Oscar category for Best Voice Acting? I know motion-capture acting has been in the conversation thanks to Andy Serkis, but man, the list of voice acting that deserved Oscars, wow.

I may be in the minority with this, but Sylvester Stallone should have received recognition for CopLand (De Niro and Keitel as well) very underrated overall. Also Guy Pierce in LA Confidetial. I know Kim Basinger won and that race could use a good examination as well

I'm disappointed none of the supporting performances from American Beauty got it. Thora Birch, Mena Suvari, Wes Bentley and Chris Cooper were all great and gave such layered performances that contributed to the "world building". The former three got in at BAFTA, which was nice to see.

I have a few from the late great Tom Sizemore. There are three performances that really stood out to me because this is the decade where he truly shined. Jack Scagnetti in Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers, Michael Cheritto in Michael Mann's Heat and his most famous role as Sgt Mike Horvath in Stephen Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. Those three performances blew me away as they were extremely gritty and dark roles but they were magnificent. All three of these performances are for Best Supporting Actor. What the hell is wrong with the Academy they nominate mediocre performances and they never nominate the ones that deserve it more. And plus the late great Ray Liotta in Goodfellas are you kidding me Academy? You know how to fail me every year. Clearly his most iconic performance by a country mile and never gets nominated a damn joke!

Hugh Grant for 4 Weddings in 95 - take out Dreyfuss or Hopkins. Also Kristin Scott Thomas for 4 Weddings - supporting actress - takes out Joan Allen. Great performances from these 2. I know Hugh Grant almost parodies himself these days, but at the time it was like he was the new Cary Grant and it was a really refreshing and new take on the Rom-Com - his charming and note-perfect performance is worthy of a Lubitsch or Sturgess movie from the 40s. (I think he won Golden Globe best actor Musical or comedy too) :)
