I am SO EXCITED you have Spacek recognized...she is one of my all-time favorites. My mom took me to see Coal Miners Daughter in the theater when I was 9 and I thought that was Loretta Lynn... about a year later I found out that was an actress and the same one who played Carrie- and I was a teen before I could watch that as it looked so scary. I have followed her career SO much and I always thought she was right up there with the great actresses of the 20th century- every performance and movie I have seen her in is so perfectly crafted. From Badlands to Marie to Missing to In the Bedroom to Night Sky now- to me she is right there with Meryl, Jessica Lange, etc. She is just a talented chameleon.

I absolutely love Meryl Streep. And I have been very critical of recent additions to the 3-Oscar club, especially Frances McDormand, who's a terrific actor but one who always does similar characters. Streep is a great actor, a chameleon, it's always a spiritual experience watching her do her magic. And the reason I am so critical of other 3-time winners is that Streep deserves so much more. She could have easily won 5-6 Oscars over the course of her illustrious career. I would have given her wins for A Cry in the Dark, Silkwood (a brilliant performance that had the bad luck of coming a year after Sophie's Choice), Adaptation. She's my close second for The Bridges of Madison County. But she's a brilliant, brilliant actor and an absolute icon.

@@melfortune5855 Well, let's agree to disagree. In my opinion, Meryl ran circles around Catherine Zeta-Jones. Not to mention some great Meryl Streep performances in the 1980s (Silkwood, A Cry in the Dark) and, of course, The Bridges of Madison County in the 1990s (which was win-worthy but probably second for me that year).

Nice to see a shout out for Timothy Hutton. And Ordinary People, actually. I always felt as though it was underappreciated. Much like another of my favorite films, Quiz Show, also directed by Robert Redford. Now is it just me or do his films seem to always be acclaimed at the time of their release, only to be a bit faded from the cinematic minds of people as the years roll on? 🤷‍♀️

Hepburn was always so great at playing strong. That’s why her performance in long days journey into night is such a revelation she’s weak. A drug addict, even piteous. It’s something one doesn’t expect from Hepburn and she is devastating in the part. I love her in lion, but I’m glad there was a tie.
@slc2466
@slc2466 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesacoffey9006 Good call- I think Hepburn goes as deep into a dramatic part as she ever did in "Long Day's"; I've always found it odd that most of the buzz centered around that ultra-famous 1962 Best Actress race involves Anne Bancroft besting Bette Davis, with nary a mention that Hepburn gave possibly her best dramatic performance that year and was fully deserving of the prize. As for 1968, I'm fully on team Streisand, as I think Barbra gives the greatest musical comedy performance ever and richly earned her win (I'm in the minority concerning Hepburn's work, as I don't think it's on the level of "Long Day's," "African Queen," "Alice Adams," "Morning Glory," "The Rainmaker" and several others).
@jamesacoffey9006
@jamesacoffey9006 Жыл бұрын
@@slc2466 i would have chosen Bancroft over Davis as well. If you Watch KZfaq reaction videos you’ll find that younger people today know Streisand more as an actress than as a singer largely due to the Fockers. Some people just, I don’t know genetically don’t like Streisand and I’ve heard the comment many times before that she can’t act. Which is crap. Think about this - she has had major successes in the genres of musicals. comedy and drama. That’s versatility. There is one scene in funny girl that specifically I think well demonstrates her abilities. Nick is arrested and Fanny comes into her dressing room dressed as baby snooks she throws on her coat insists upon walking out and dealing with the press. She goes from laughing it off cracking jokes to insisting she is mrs. Arnstein to not being able to answer whether or not she still loves him and walks away in tears. That’s a lot of emotions in just a brief period of time and she pulls it off.

I love these videos. Again, very good list. :) This time, before watching your video, I quickly googled the winners from that decade and came up with this list to compare with yours. Ha! I do count Kramer vs Kramer and Norma Rae for the 1970s, so... I also have to say that I have not seen most of these performances in YEARS, thus this list is taken from my (vague) memory. :) 1. Streep, 2. Dustin, Rainman, 3. Linda Hunt, 4 DeNiro, 5. F Murray, 6. Ghandi, 7. Dianne Wiest, 8. Daniel Day Lewis, 9. Geraldine's trip to Bountiful, 10. Kevin Kline's fish Wanda. R/ups Shirley, Angelica, William, Peggy and Haing. :)

A quality list and you're correct in that the academy has a problem with nominating two performers in the best actor or actress category for the same film and has a pattern of compensating in odd ways. A great example was The Hours, with Streep, Kidman and Moore in equally leading roles, however Kidman got the best actress nod, Moore was nominated for best supporting, but was nominated as best actress the same year for Far From Home, and Streep wasn't nominated for the film, but was given best supporting for Adaptation, when she basically had a lead in the film. Only critique here is both Norma Rae and Kramer vs. Kramer would really belong in a Top wins of the 1970's, for they were both 1979 films.

I just watched this and LOVE that you also think Sissy should have won for “In The Bedroom” (sorry, Halle Berry). Thank you for recognizing that! 😊

To make up for Halle “losing” in the last comment, here’s four “wins”: 1. Gabourey Sidibe over Sandra Bullock (No-brainer, honestly. Sandy was great, but Gabby was startling and haunting. It just hurt.) 2. Viola Davis over Meryl Streep (while Meryl is a goddess, Viola’s heartbreaking performance should be what every other dramatic actress aspires to). 3. Morgan Freeman over Tom Hanks (Yeah, I went there. Forrest Gump was overrated. Morgan Freeman was fire, nuanced and subtle, and that speech before the parole board… wow. 4. Eddie Murphy over Alan Arkin. I think this is a no-brainer, isn’t it? Dreamgirls didn’t get enough attention anyway, and this was one of the Academy’s biggest mistakes. He was electric!

08:00 Sally's 1980 hair is unreal, it's as powerful as her performance in "Norma Rae". As I've noted on one of your other videos, Tim Hutton for me is one of the all-timer wins in Oscar history, though of course it was category fraud. But that is how it was, even Tatum O'Neal was clearly a lead actress for her worthy "Paper Moon" win.

I completely agree with your number one I think Meryl Streep and Sophie's choice is one of the best if not best acting performances I've ever seen in my 50 years of life. The fact that she's an American playing a Polish woman who speaks broken English Polish and German. If you were to watch that movie and not know who Meryl Streep was you would not know that actress was American. She's also never looked so beautiful and so disheveled at the same time. When she starts talking about her past on the porch and she's looking through the screen I'm speechless. And I think you are right She set the bar so high that people became accustomed to her greatness. I think she easily should have won for a Doubt which is one of her best performances over Sandra Bullock in The blind side which is ridiculous. Watch the scene in Doubt where she confronts Philip Seymour Hoffman and then watch any part of the Blind side and tell me if it's better. You'll come up with a resounding hardly.

And from such a subjective category as the Academy Awards that is no easy thing to do. But I was no fan of Sissy Spacek but thought Mary Tyler Moore's performance in Ordinary People was revelatory in comparison. True this video was about those that won in the 80's, I feel some recognition of MTM's performance was overlooked when listing Sissy Spacek's. Including 1979 released films on a best of the 80's list while excluding 1989 released films just doesn't make sense to me. I know the awards are given the next year (1980) & the title says 'Oscar Wins' but including Kramer vs. Kramer & Norma Rae is gonna make people think they came out in 1980.
