I saw the triplets of Belleville when I was about 13. The beginning starts off with a large French crowd going to see Josephine baker and a bunch of horny monkeys start going wild when she comes on stage and starts shaking her jugs lol (that's what she's known for in France) . Very silent movie but very funny . They only speak about 6 times through the whole movie. Funniest part is when the grandmother meets up with the triplets and one of them takes her frog fishing and she throws a stick of dynamite into the pond 😂

Dunno about Fritz, yes it's an adult animated film, but IMO it hasn't really stood the test of time as well as Heavy Metal (orig.) Maybe put in Miss Hokusai in, though it really isn't well-known enough to justify, it's very different from the other films in this list, and certainly adult-themed. DMPepe I hated that movie, didn't even finish it and I love animated films. That's not to say its a bad movie or doesn't deserve to be on this list, just wasn't one that worked for me. Sometimes films work better at a certain age. Like Grave of the Fireflies, if I'd watched that as a young teen, I'd probably have been yawning wanting to watch Akira instead but now I'm an old fart, Akira has really dated, its ideas are no longer fresh sci-fi but pretty done to death and Grave of the Fireflies is a masterpiece I'll watch with my slippers on and pretend pipe in mouth.

Lunardivider24 its a sequel directed (or Produced I don't quite remember) by Carl Maceck (Co-creator of the Robotech series). The movie is great but its NOT like the 1981 film. that one had storyes created by great artists like Dan O'Bannon (Co-creator of Alien 1979). But Heavy Metal 2000 is not bad, is only one simple story instead of diferent short storyes like the first film. And of course, Heavy Metal DESERVES to be here becausa it was one of the FIRST adult animated films, there are more out there, lost in time... and traped in the VHS age D:

link955NH I'm not even certain that 2000 can be properly called a sequel. It didn't continue any of the stories of the original. Of course, there's no law that says a follow up can't have it's own identity, but 2000 wasn't even trying to do that. It ripped off the "Taarna getting dressed" sequence quite un-self consciously, for one thing.

+Revonda Ball I'll admit it took me like a month before I realized how good the original was. I was really confused the first time I watched it, but eventually it all started making sense.

Reaching out to my fellow 70's/80's kids. I remember an "adult" animated movie that seemed to be in a similar vein as Bakshi's work. Something about a gang (motorcycle maybe?) that wore burgundy colored jackets, goggles, and German-officer-type hats. Their leader's face reminded me of Mok from Rock and Rule. I remember that one of his guys dies and he is cradling him on the street/sidewalk. Ring a bell for anybody?

Ugh yeah I saw watership down in the theater when I was like 8 or 9 and it freaked me out so bad my dad had to take me out and leave lol. I still can't stomache the film to this day.. and I love horror movies. Two of my absolute favorites, Wizards, and Fire And Ice not even mentioned here 😟 Some other good ones are When the Wind Blows, Reniassance, Belladonna of Sadness, and the series The Maxx , Aeon Flux, and Spawn ( Much Music used to have Sunday night Adult Anime movies in the 90s).

If you've never seen Grave of the Fireflies I can NOT recommend it enough! It is one of the most profoundly sad and effective movies I've ever seen. It should be number one on here and it's not even close. Roger Ebert considered it one of the greatest films of all time and he was not wrong. It's incredibly good and it will seriously stick with you long after you watch it. I'd maybe even consider it the most "effective" movie I've ever seen.

I bought the AKIRA steel book edition, put on the original soundtrack with surround sound. The scene when he transforms into a blob of “oh my god” gives you chills…… Not only the greatest anime but also had one of the best soundtracks.

I would have preferred you not include anime. You could have had a different episode for anime by itself--god knows there's enough--and it would have opened space for more Western animation. There isn't nearly as much attention paid to (quality) mature Western animation as there is to anime.

"I hate books. They're so amateurish." How the hell can you write off an entire medium as "amateurish"? Amongst the acknowledged best films in the world are anime, writing music *solely for anime* is an actual job, there are dozens of large anime & translation studios hiring artists, writers, voice actors, and directors, and it's an industry that makes billions of dollars each year. America alone has hundreds of conventions featuring or focusing on anime, and Anime Expo (one of the biggest U.S. anime conventions) had 80,000 attendees. A good number of the more successful U.S. cartoons were inspired by anime. It is by definition not amateurish.
