As someone who has avoided "wankfest miniatures games," I am glad to see El Grande at the top where it belongs. I don't think I am smart enough for the multiple mechanisms that come into games like Rising Sun, and certainly do not have the patience for Twilight. El Grande has a simple ruleset with complex decisions and plays fast with great screwage potential. Along those lines, I am glad to see Las Vegas Royale made it too. Honorable mention goes to Tammany Hall but maybe too similar to El Grande? Great list and SYNT.

That was very entertaining, good sir. I have a recent version of Las Vegas and find that people understand and enjoy it quickly. Just rolling dice for money and starting random vendettas is always a joy.

Played Kemet (1st edition) for the first time last week and was blown away. May actually be my new favorite. There was a bit of king-making at the end by two players who stood no chance of winning, which is my only criticism but still loved it.

Because your taste is very similar to mine, I backed Cyclades Legendary, the meeples version. I am so glad they're even offering that option. I'll bet meeples are just so much cleaner and more tasteful on the table, and I look forward to that auction magic, since I love QE quite a lot.

My top 10: 1. Chaos in the Old World 2. Rising Sun 3. Forbidden Stars 4. Kemet 5. Cyclades 6 Twilight Imperium (IV) 7. Feudum 8. Eclipse 9. Wonderland's War 10. Empires of the Void (II) Honourable mention for Mission Red Planet. Not sure if Scythe fits, it would probably come in at #4 if it does. I've not had the chance to try El Grande, Root or Inis.

I sold my "big box" El Grande but I would absolutely buy it again if they produced it in a sane sized box. Glad to see Cyclades up here! That game doesn't give near as much love as it deserves. I put Cyclades up there with Inis which is sadly lacking from your list! If you haven't had a chance to try Tammany Hall, you should give that one a go as well.

Great list packed with wonderful games! I guess you're right, but I've never thought of Las Vegas or Caylus as area control games. I'm a simple man: in my area control games, I need a *map* and big plots of imaginery land to fight over. :D My picks: 1. Mission Red Planet 2. Cyclades 3. The Court of Miracles 4. Kemet: Blood & Sand 5. Lockup 6. Rising Sun 7. Caesar! 8. Bunny Kingdom 9. Blood Rage 10. New York 1901 / Garden Nation

Very happy to see El Grande top of the list! We discovered it a couple of years ago and it's so obvious now how it influenced everything that has come after. Do you have the Big Box edtion? Really mixes things up. I also have to to mention, that whilst I know you'd probably rather break it into small pieces and stick it up your arse, Inis is incredible and such a shame it doesn't work for you or your group. Possibly our fave area control game. Certainly is based on amount of plays. 🤩

@@BoardGameBollocks I actually have the 1st edtion too. Great to travel with as its tiny and if we play base game we use it. The big box comes with meeples but I actually prefer the cubes. We matched on 8/10 of those, great picks, I couldn't have done it better myself, except for #9 and maybe #10. #9 is a huge stretch though ... there's not much area control in that one at all - but then again I played the 1303 version so it might be different so ignore me if it originally had more area control. For me personally, I would have included Cthulhu Wars and Antike II as my replacements. Honorable mentions goes to Godfather, Inis, Viral, Small World, Mission Red Planet 2E
@BoardGameBollocks
@BoardGameBollocks Жыл бұрын
Area control is fundamental to winning. Don’t contribute and it’s -points per round and even more per scoring. If you add in you can generate huge points by having the majority and getting the favours then I stand by my ranking. It just doesn’t look important on the board vacua’s it’s a tiny space.
@Straddllw

@@BoardGameBollocksit’s been a long time since I played Caylus so I’m breaking that game out this Thursday at game meetups just to try and figure out what you mean by area control in that game. @BoardGameBollocks
@BoardGameBollocks Жыл бұрын
The castle building is fundamental to winning the game. It’s overlooked because it’s a tiny area in the top left corner. If it has been a map then Caylus would be more widely regarded as area control.
