Delve is a mechanic in Magic the Gathering that allows the caster to help pay for their spell by exiling cards from their graveyard. For each one card exiled, it reduces the cost of mana you actually have to pay by one. First appearing in Future Sight as a speculative future mechanic, Delve has only shown up in two full booster sets in Magic. This is partly because of delve being a quite powerful keyword which has multiple cards on multiple format banlists. It doesn’t take much setup to get a full enough graveyard to start casting delve spells for their minimum cost and start snowballing your advantage from there. So today we’ll be looking at Delve’s short but potent history as we go over the top ten delve cards in Magic the Gathering.

To truly let the power of Treasure Cruise (and to a lesser extent, Dig) speak for itself, here's a little tidbit of knowledge from the dark times it was legal in Modern: decks began to add Blue to themselves just to play them. Even **BURN**, of all things, was splashing Blue to use the card!

On Angler, it's also a big creature playable through Elemental Blasts AND Snuff Out, that can make use of the graveyard through Gravedigger's Cage and it dodges Karakas, something Tasigur fails at. I suspect that Arabian Nights is the most blatant of all references to external IP other than D&D and Universes Beyond. For one, some of its cards contain such references. Example: The card Piety has an excerpt from the Qur'an as its flavor text. For another, the very theme of the set, including the plane of Rabiah, is a reference.

Part of the reason Angler is so good in Pauper is also because its stats, color, and even creature typing help it dodge some of the most common best removal, and most beaters are 4/4, so it doesn't trade to them in combat.

I'd say treasure cruise is a little better than dig, got banned way faster in legacy which I'd argue represents it's power more. Still very close though, it's almost impossible to separate the two. Also tombstalker could have been a fun mention, though it never saw all that much play. I feel like people didn't realize how good delve was until we got to Khans of tarkir and that's how it never saw play like tasigoyf and angler did. Great vid! I love the delve mechanic

Cruise isn't stronger than Dig, just more splashable. If you're a 3+ color deck in a format where both cards are legal, you'd probably lean towards Dig due to the single blue pip, unless you're a deck that really cares about drawing the right cards or is very heavy into blue to the point where UU isn't an issue. Meanwhile in Vintage, where practically every deck running blue at all is centered on blue in the manabase, Cruise gets cut before Dig almost every time.
@jackelope6134
@jackelope6134 Жыл бұрын
I mean like I said it's basically impossible to tell the two. In my opinion, Cruise being more splashable, cheaper, and getting an extra card contributes to it being more powerful in a vacuum. But dig is better in decks that don't need to worry as much about those factors, as you said. I'd play dig in control or combo decks like show and tell or doomsday, but I'd play cruise in delver or storm

Tombstalker should have been given an honorable mention: It was THE first card with Delve and was printed in Future Sight if I remember correctly as a Time Shifted Card. I saw this be used by some Dredge decks alongside Ichorid... Ichorid eats the black creatures, and Tombstalker eats anything else that isnt with regards to Soulflayer, how does that card interact with creatures that could gain those keyword effects instead of actually having them? For example: there is an old card from Legends called Gabriel Angelfire, which gains one of the 4 keyword abilities until your next turn: Flying, First Strike, Trample or Rampage: 2. If a Soulflayer eats one of those, does it gain the 3 keyword abilities, or no luck because it can GAIN those 3 but doesnt naturally have it?

In pioneer? Sure, but it wasn't too long ago that inverter was everywhere and abusing the crap out of it and in older formats where it often just wins the game if you cast it, dig is better. The higher the power of your format the better card selection is, as it can often only take one card to decide a game.

How is delve that strong when you need to fill the graveyard first? Seems pretty situational, and pretty problematic, considering many delve cards draw the resource fromt he same pool. I mean sure, older formats might have more cards to do it, but they also have more traditionally strong cards, so what exactly makes this card an 8 on the storm scale?
@cartergreen2309
@cartergreen2309 Жыл бұрын
Good delve cards are all far too powerful for their cost if you delve them and you're also forgetting that cards going to the graveyard happens naturally anyway. That's the main problem. You get tons of value for doing nothing different anyway most of the time.

Cut over Soulflayer. Cut saw competitive play while Soulflayer decks are memes. It’s a good card but a card that saw consistant play across many strategies is better then a fringe card in a meme deck.
