Back in college in the 1980s the instructor would wheel out a 2 channel 20Meg Hameg scope to a fanfare of music and gasps of desire from the trainee engineers all hoping to be allowed to touch the knobs and tweak the timebase. The only digital scope we had seen was in magazines with a price tag requiring a small mortgage. Today, we are spoilt for choice costing peanuts, back in the 80s we would have ripped your arms off just for the worst digital scope of today that we tend to sniff at. However, I don't have the heart to *kill* my Tektronix 465 and sometimes, there are times when the 465 captures things the digital scope doesn't. Many engineers today are too young to realise just how spoilt they are with the huge range of affordable tech at their disposal. Nice video dude.

For buying new, I agree, it looks like the SDS1102CML+ is the way to go. If you're buying used, though, I think the DS1102E has the edge. Since that model has been out for so long, used ones can be had for around $200 shipped. Once the sample rate is high enough, my most important metric in a scope is the record length, and as pointed out in the video, both the Siglent and the Rigol have good record length. I used to have an old HP MegaZoom scope with 1M record length per channel when I was in school, and it was so nice to be able to take a trace and hone in on pretty much any part of the signal I wanted to look at. I hadn't thought about that spec when I bought it, and wondered why this old scope with a green CRT seemed better than some of the new scopes I used at school. Then I learned about record length. What a difference.

Kikkoman Soy Sauce You are right - the used market can be great - also watching Amazon - they recently had a Rigol for less than half price. I bought mine from Amazon as a damaged bike, it was $100 off. But those sales go fast.

@@KissAnalog Considering the price spread on all the scopes reviewed here, I would have to be a real fool to not jump on the top #1. For $50-60, you're getting a product from a top company that will support you, compared to hoping and praying you don't have to ship back to China, etc. Work some OT or wait another month and save up a little extra. Going too cheap is almost always going to end up with dissatisfaction.

Did you pick one up? I lost track, but someone picked one up recently and reported that the firmware updates has shown improvements. Great question;) if it is signwave, you can go the analog bandwidth. Square wave has fast edges so you might have to expect some rounding of edges. Yo are probably safe reading most wave forms at say 25% of the bandwidth. So 25 MHz for a 100 MHz scope - just a safe guess.

I think Owon is relatively new on the scope market, but others like GW Instek has been around almost as long as Tektronix with a great reputation.

Great question Tom! It realy is based on what price you want to pay;) I am really becoming a fan of the PicoScope which is a computer based scope. The advantage is that you get a big screen to work on and the software is continually getting upgrades vs buying a bench scope that might only get small firmware tweaks - if any. Also, your money is going to more scope features as the display drives and GPU to drive them is in your computer. I was really never very interested until I tried the Pico. 3:44 isn't 255 Msamples/ seconds enough for 100 MHz according to Nyquist ? Unless 100 MHz is the processor speed, so yeah....
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 жыл бұрын
You are right #Youssef Dirani, Nyquist is satisfied with 2x samples per cycle basically. But, even that isn't realistic, because the samples could all land on the zero crossing - then there is no reproduction. I think that's why it seems that most scope have a 2.5x sample per cycle. But, in this case, this scope we are talking about is fine for one channel, but if it is divided between channels - then it is not enough. This particular scope is also different than the others in that it moves from Real Time sample rate to Equivalent Time Sample rate when another channel is activated. So, it is different than others because it is not 'Real Time' what we have with the others and is what we want. Hope that makes sense - I was actually going easy with that scope I think. ET sampling is actually OK if it is done right - but I was basing this review on RT sampling which is the preferred method today.

Everyone has their own opinions, but I *totally* understand why someone might give a scope 4 stars when it's a "Great Scope". Just because something is good does *not* mean that it should get 5 stars. In fact, a *good* scope for that price point should get 3 stars! If you give everything 5 stars, then there's no room to differentiate truly awesome products from average ones! Here's how I rate products: 1 star = product failed, customer service did not resolve 2 star = major flaws, product less than expected 3 star = good product, works as expected or issues quickly resolved via customer service 4 star = excellent product, better than expected 5 star = flawless product, best-in-class, a classic, ZERO flaws So, I'm obviously one of "those people" that doesn't give "good" products 5 stars. People can dislike me if they wish, but my ratings *MEAN* something. If I give a product 5 stars, then it's probably *better* than one I give 4 stars. For most consumers, anything that works when you plug it in is 5 stars, so future shoppers who look at the ratings will have no idea which products are truly better. Sorry, but I disagree with that paradigm entirely. Reviews and ratings are meant to be objective and critical, not just 5 stars across the board. The greatest novels in History should be 5 stars; everything else, by definition, *cannot* be. For example, there's a Hantek reviewer on Amazon who gave the product 5 stars despite the PC feature failing to work and ZERO response from customer service. The reviewer justified this by saying that they didn't use the PC feature anyway. Huh? It would be *generous* to give that product 3 stars! I like to compare this with dunk contests, as most people have seen one at some point in their lives. How many times have you seen the judges give a dunk straight 10's only to then have someone do a better dunk afterward? What do they do then? They're screwed. The average slam dunk is, by definition, a 5/10. 3 stars represents an AVERAGE product at that price point, which means that the average star rating for all of the scopes in this comparison should be somewhere in the 3-to-4 star range (1 star products will generally stop being sold, which raises the average somewhat).
@KissAnalog

@@KissAnalog It is particularly slow in reacting to set up changes. This is very frustrating. But in general I believe it is not fast during capture either. I have not compared it to other scopes for that last point. I purchased it because of its large screen, however scopes with even larger screens (like the Rigol DS1054x and the others) came onto the market a short time after my purchase as this is always the case for me:) Hantek is said to be fast. I wanted the largest bandwidth possible to visualize properly square and non sinusioidal waves.

This model or newer firmware resolve this and in menu you can adjust when and how to disapear this menu on time (sec), manual or never. All chanells have own parameters independent and if you want you can to adjust horizontal, vertical and trigger separate for any channel. USB connection is very simple and fast. PC software have very clean UI and usefull as a FFT math. Yo can to see FFT as on LCD scope screen and it also have separate adjustment as another channels. If you want, you can to save scope trace as WAV and after this import that WAV in any independent analyzer and scope software. Measurement is possible in any direction on scope, manual or automatic. About the rating system. Man this is the more unfair and imprecise tool of measure. People are not honest. As you noticed they may give 4 stars and say: the best evaaa! Also if they get something with the slight imperfection (let's say they forgot to put in a 5 dollars cable), they sill give 1 star and swear. So fuck that system. All the stars should be followed by a small comment to describe why he voted like this. We need in the future an AI system to evaluate the comment part and if they gave 1 star because they had a bad day the ratting should be deleted. I never watch those ratings because I know they are bogus.

Thats where statistics come in to help us. I would never trust a 4-5 star review with a small sample size. Perhaps if it was Rigol or Siglent or other well known and trusted manf. If it doesn't have 50, 100 people rating it, its quite easy to skew. In fact, thats pretty common the last several years on Amazon especially, and its pretty cheap. I especially look for 4-5 star ratings that are just ratings with no comments, or generic comments. If people are going to take the time to go back and rate something that costs actual money, and at 4-5 stars, they're usually likely to explain why they liked it so much, no go to all that effort just to thumbs up it.

Manufacturers of scopes made in Taiwan try to tell me that their quality is better. I don’t know about that, but I do know that my made in China scope seems to be made with the same quality as my ‘made in China’ scopes.
