How was the original Gameboy not on the list? It established Nintendo as the dominant player in the handheld video game market, they've never really had competition in the area of dedicated handheld hardware, the Gameboy was where that started and it's also where Pokemon which is the highest grossing video game franchise.

The list was based on home consoles. And Pokemon didn't do anything innovative, there were games like it before. It just came along at the right time for Millennials to get in on it.

@@neoasura the main innovative thing about pokemon was simply the trading and battling pokemon aspect and it being one of the first monster collector/collectathon games. The designer of it specifically made it to encourage kids to get together over it and back then they were all hooking their gameboys at lunch or recess. Other than that it was just a standard procedure RPG.

I think a big part of what make N64 important enough to make the top 10 is its multiplayer focus, both in its games and having 4 controller ports, which became a standard for all systems after that (other than PS2, haha). The analog joystick was also hugely important, along with rumble (pre-dating the PS1 dual-shock release)

The N64 is weird because it pushed forward a lot of innovations, but it's also arguably the console that did the most damage to Nintendo's brand. I can still see it in the top 10, mostly because of what it contributed that became standard, despite its flaws.

"Best" and "most important" are two different (albeit overlapping) topics. The Magnavox Odyssey is no one's idea of the best anything, but its introduction literally created the home video game industry. The Fairchild VES/Channel F was quickly overshadowed by the Atari VCS/2600, but it was the first video game console with a microprocessor and ROM cartridges. The Game & Watch line and the original Game Boy offered experiences that were crude even by contemporaneous standards, but they popularized the familiar handheld form factor and initiated Nintendo's uninterrupted dominance in the portable segment. I would enjoy hearing Pat and Ian discuss their own opinions/rankings of the most historically significant video game consoles in a future installment of the podcast.

yeah, as far as importance for the gaming industry I would go 1. Magnavox Odyssey 2. NES 3. SNES (pseudo 3D gaming, perfected 2D gaming)4. N64 (invented 3D polygon based gaming as we know it)5. PC Engine (pioneered disc tech, cutscenes) 6. Switch (look at the Nvidia K1, Valve Steam Deck, Evercade, this is being normalized) 7. XBox 360 (online gaming being integral to consoles) 8. Game Boy 9. Wii 10. Xbox One (game pass and upscaled BC, changing console gaming)

Agreed and I was thinking the same, 'best' and 'most important' aren't always the same with these consoles. The PS4 was a fine console that did 'most' things well, and could fit into a 'best console' category for what it does and for what it is. 'Most important'? Not so sure in the annuls of game history it will go down as overly 'important'. It was an iterative upgrade and bridge between the PS3 and the PS5.

I understand the ps2 it came with a dvd player so you could watch movies on it (even in your own room) it was also backward compatible with the ps1 which made the library insane compared to xbox, dreamcast and gamecube. the fact that I could go shopping for a dvd movie, a ps2 game and a ps1 at the same time for my ps2 was insane back then (with mommys money back then ofc)
@gamerguy425
@gamerguy425 2 жыл бұрын
The backwards compatibility was also great because you could use the PS1 controllers for PS2 games (sans the D-pad only ones for some games) and get higher quality component output from it for PS1 games. N64 games are stuck on the original hardware with horrendous No-RGB video output. The other three Sixth gen controllers or just kind of weird and not as practical IMO. The basic dualshock layout though is still in use to this day.

Ian's comment about Sony PS1 and PS2 being the most dominate ~10 year run we've seen (1995 to 2005) from a company is key to why it's so impressive, but it is also why I think DS and Wii were so impressive (2004 to 2012), Where Nintendo sold 260M+ gaming devices over an 8 year span, and completely dominated pop culture's current gaming trends. Gamers literally had to combined the PS3 and 360 when talking online just to ignore the Wii's success, in most cases people called them PS360 or the HD Twins. We talk about how the PS2 sold 155M+ units, but DS sold 154M+ units. It's very impressive to see that trend from one company and then directly into another, and now we've seen both PS4 and Switch dominate the market together, Switch is passing Wii and PS1 numbers next month and is only slowing down because of the chip shortage, as Nintendo can't keep them in stock.

The DS I think deserved to sell well because its main gimmick (I even hesitate to call it that) was actually fun, unique and fairly practical, that lots of games could take advantage of or not. The wii is *among* the worst, and probably the most undeservedly successful console of all time IMO. it put ALL its eggs in one basket of this motion control gimmick which people ate it right up but almost everyone hated it immediately afterwards. And then they got tired of wii sports after a month and never played it again. and then the censor bar fell off the TV. They did basically the same thing with the Wii U only the gimmick was not as immediately flashy and it tanked. It just embodies all the negatives of Nintendo, shitty horsepower, a weak gimmick, tons of shovelware shit and tie-ins for kids and first party titles just carrying the whole library. Except when they don't. It even had the "annoying add-on/ugpgrade that should have been in it from the start instead of complicating things" with the motion plus and the jacket, it's like irritating Nintendo practices bingo.

10) GameCube: the reason is because it helped improve solid franchises from previous generations and even some from the GBA as well which was the same generation, but what's especially important is the GameCube controller. It is still used nowadays on the Nintendo switch three generations later and that is mighty impressive. 9) Sega Genesis: the reason is because it was important for there to be legit competition going against nintendo. Nintendo finally had real competition with the Sega Genesis going against them and it finally allowed Sega to have some success as their predecessor the Master system got whooped by the NES, but although the Super Nintendo did beat the Sega Genesis by nearly 12 million units at the end, it still was the closest battle for first place ever. It also brought in some pretty solid new franchises that are still around today obviously most particularly Sonic the hedgehog. 8) Xbox: the reason I put the original Xbox on here is that basically this solidified the three crown competition we have now. Ever since then it's always been Nintendo versus Sony versus Microsoft. Another reason I'd like to point out is as far as I know the original Xbox is the first home console to actually have its own internal hard drive instead of having to deal with memory cards as immediately in the very next generation the Wii and the PS3 and of course the 360 as well all have internal hard drives and that is how it remains since. The original Xbox you can kind of say is the first home console to actually be like having a home computer sort of because of that internal hard drive and how powerful system it was. No mouse and keyboard sure, but nevertheless a big step forward in gaming I think. 7) Atari 2600: well the reason for this is because it made home console video gaming mainstream to begin with. It made popular the use of interchangeable cartridges. 6) PlayStation: this was the first console that Sony ever made and it sold so well and it really pushed us forward by being the first successful cd-based console. There were others before it but they didn't have the games or the financial backing to be successful, but Sony did and for the first time Nintendo actually was not first place in a console war bringing them down to earth and forcing them to have to try harder in later generations. When competition is legit it can lead to better quality products. 5) NES: the NES saved the home console market and I think that's enough to put it on the list honestly. But there's more to it than that. The graphics are obviously primitive by today's standards, but they must have looked really good back then considering that people had Atari before then and the graphics were just total garbage and comparison. On the NES you can actually tell what every object on the screen is because it actually looks like something. Kind of like how Pat said it's like a cartoon. 4) Gameboy: there have been portable consoles tried before this and to be honest the game gear which was its competitor by Sega should have been the better console with the fact that it was in color not to mention the Atari lynx was in color, but Nintendo's game boy was much more affordable and would last longer on its battery life and although in a lot of cases the games were downgrades on there, there were some really solid games that just actually were shockingly really good for being on this primitive handheld. Obviously Pokemon comes to mind, but Link's Awakening was a damn good title and while Super Mario Land one I'd say is not the most well aged game, Super Mario Land 2 actually looks kind of like a portal 8-bit version of Super Mario World which is impressive for 1992 and it's a damn good game and Wario which isn't actually a reason to put this on the list, but nevertheless Wario is worth mentioning because he came into existence on this handheld. Nintendo has dominated the handheld market ever since this console except for the virtual boy of course. 3) SNES: the Super Nintendo allowed Nintendo to in fact beat the Sega Genesis but it was the closest console war for first place ever. There were so many good games that will forever stand the test of time such as Super Mario World Legend of Zelda A Link to the past, super metroid, and a lot of people still think Kirby Superstar is the greatest Kirby game ever made. I think ever since Kirby triple deluxe came out for 3DS that game took over as the best Kirby game, but nevertheless Kirby Superstar was incredible and there are so many other great games on this. Super Metroid is what I think the greatest game on the Super Nintendo and it's one of the greatest games ever made. Obviously Super Mario kart started on Super Nintendo as well and is a massive franchise now. But one very important thing I have to point out is the controller. The SNES controller is perfection and it has stood the test of time. The button layout on the PlayStation controller is identical to the layout on an SNES controller and the later we Classic controller and the Pro controller for the Wii U and Pro controller for the switch are also very much inspired by the original design of this perfect SNES controller. The controller for the SNES is the best type of controller you could ever make because both Microsoft and Sony as well as Nintendo themselves have made controllers that have similar layouts which is maybe some changes here and there like joysticks for example and additional shoulder buttons. 2) Switch: the Nintendo switch has revolutionized gaming and made popular the idea of actually having a console that can both work as a handheld or instead display on the big screen. It is the most powerful handheld console in existence with really good HD graphics on a handheld which has never been seen before except maybe on your smartphone or tablet or something which isn't designed specifically for gaming to begin with, but the fact that you can still dock it and put it up on the big screen and have it in 1080p HD graphics is pretty damn awesome. 1) PlayStation 2: I have to agree on this one. I'd hate to say this but I'm one of those very few people in existence who never owned a PS2 back in the day even though I grew up in the 90s and was a teenager in the early 2000s to becoming an adult in the mid to late 2000s, but yeah my family had a GameCube and later my older brother got an original Xbox. I didn't actually have a PS2 until I bought a PS2 slim on eBay a few years ago. Anyways the PS2 I do agree seems to be the system that has popularized video gaming to the masses and it's not just because of being able to play DVDs which proves that video game consoles can be used for more than just video games as all consoles nowadays have streaming sites on them like how the switch has Hulu and KZfaq and the PS4 and Xbox One I'd imagine would have Hulu and KZfaq and Netflix and probably even Disney Plus and Amazon prime as well as others meaning that the PS2 in some way started the trend of making a video game console be a multimedia player which I still think is a pretty big deal since a lot of time with current video game consoles you're actually often using them to watch TV on said streaming sites like Hulu and Netflix. But the fact is the PS2 was definitely a system for everyone. There were games that were geared towards kids that while adults can still enjoy and there are games geared towards adults that you can possibly enjoy as a teenager and maybe if you're mature enough you can enjoy as a kid as well. Sure previous generations had games like that even on the N64 for example, but the PS2 really pushed the envelope on that.

64 had more of a party vibe than all the other consoles and I think people have fond memories of playing more with their friends than directly comparing the games themselves. I think that was the genius of the 64, which is why the world gravitated towards online games. People want to play games with other people and the tech really doesn't matter when the fundamentals of a game are on point.

Also laid the blueprint on 3D polygon based gaming. "Camera controls" were not really much of a thing until N64 had the yellow c buttons controlling it in Mario 64. Zelda OOT had Z-targeting which became the norm to this day in 3D action, adventure, open world games in combat. Most of what is made and played today all took inspiration from what the N64 pioneered.

@Michael Palmer my personal favorite PS1 games were SotN, MGS, FF7, Xenogears, as I am not counting arcade ports that also appeared on Saturn as much that often had terrible load times. Many other notable games like RE, Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal, Tomb Raider, Wipeout. PS1 had a way bigger lineup with more genres well represented. But the best of the best of that console cycle, only SotN would make my top 10, the other 9 games would all be N64 games, feel free to disagree, but the peak of the N64 was way better than PS1. And putting gaming tastes aside bc that is subjective, objectively, N64 revolutionized polygon based gaming to what we see today.
@hepwo91222
@hepwo91222 2 жыл бұрын
@Michael Palmer PS1 had many great sprite based games including all their arcade fighters Saturn usually got slightly better versions of. SotN was IMO, the best PS1 game and was the best version at the time, it was about as good as the Metroidvania game could get and none have surpassed it since IMO. But it didn't invent that style of game, it simply perfected it. Its a toss up between Super Metroid and SotN as best game ever in that genre. As far as "most important cosnoles" though, PS1 was important more as a sales winner, not on its impact on gaming genres IMO. It had a lot of really good JRPG's, but they were invented a decade earlier, maybe it just brought that genre more to the masses could be its legacy? But as far a genre defining and inventiveness, N64 was way more "important" and influential.

The N64 could have had RPG's on the system, that wasn't restricted due to the media and they did have a couple like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Quest, etc. The NES and SNES had plenty of RPGs too, great ones, with great music that were on cartridge they just weren't gonna get 3D ones with all the voices, sound, video clips etc. I do remember a lot of debate at that time too on CD vs Cart. Cd's were new, verrry slow, less reliable, and while cheaper to make the barrier of entry was higher if you didn't already have the tech. Sony had an "in" because they already were producing in their sound, tech departments etc so it was an easy pivot for them, not so much for Nintendo at the time, that's why they tried to partner with Sony on the Nintendo Playstation. Nintendo was still looking at the Floppy disk tech they had already invested in with the Famicom.

If I had to do my own list (home consoles only, no handhelds), numbers 1, 2, and 3 would be PS1, PS2, and SNES respectively. After that, it would be tougher for me to give a solid ranking to the rest. I know that my list would definitely include Genesis, Saturn, PCEngine, 2600, NES, GameCube, and I guess PS4. I'm glad the Wii didn't make this list. Yeah, it sold a lot, but there really aren't that many games that are must plays. Not a fan of N64, but I can see how it could be justified for the top 10. There may be only a couple dozen games worth playing, but those games are all really good and widely loved by the gaming community.

I always thought it was another standard /good/ nintendo system, but retrospection from others' viewpoints demonstrates to me pretty well that it wasn't too great. I do remember the unimpressive gamecube, so I've taken my childhood impression and replaced it to be that the N64 and the GCN were similarly 'whatever.' Decent software, but the N64 itself didn't shake ground that generation. Thanks for the conversation, Ian, Pat. Keep well~

They are downplaying how influential the N64 remains to this day. 3D polygon based gaming, N64 pioneered how we would interact with games like that which while they weren't invented there, N64 showed how those games should control and how to interact. Based on the criteria of the ranking, the Gameboy should've been in the Top 10. It was the first mainstream portable console and as others have said, it established Nintendo as top dog of the portable market and no one else has been able to take that title from them in the 30 plus years since the Gameboy's launch. Also, again based on the criteria of the ranking, the PS4 and, as much as I love it, the Switch should not be included as it's too soon to know their true impact on the market. The Wii should be there instead as the motion controls live on today at Nintendo (Switch Joy Cons) and even the competition dabbled in motion controls (playstation move, xbox kinect) and didn't have nearly the same amount of success as Nintendo did. Finally, I think the N64 had more of an impact than Pat and Ian say it does. While it wasn't the first console to use these, It made four controller ports as well the analog stick mainstream (Sony didn't have analog sticks on the Playstation until a year or two after the 64's launch), and it arguably was the first to truly bring first person shooters to the home console.

One thing I'll always remember about the PS2 (and PS3 to some extent) that was significant for the time was that the controller didn't change. Before then, every console had to reinvent the wheel and make a whole new controller with each new generation. Of course, part of that was that controllers were improving so each company wanted to be the model future improvements were based on, but I'd say PlayStation fully won that debate with their consistent design across each console generation. Plus their shape buttons have fully ingrained in my brain more than any other controller layout. You ask me to press "Y" and I have to look, I don't know by heart where Y is on Xbox or Nintendo, but ask me to press "Square" and I immediately know.

I'd probably drop it to 10 or 9 because, like you said, outside of a few core very important games the rest of the library is janky garbage lol As for Sony, they came along at the exact right time. Right when folks who grew up on NES/sega were transitioning to teenagers and possibly out of gaming because it was "kids stuff". They specifically marketed to them and made sure there was plenty of games that appealed to them. They made it cool to continue playing games past the age of 12. This list lost its credibility when it put the Playstation 4 over the Genesis in terms of importance. Really? The Genesis was a massive game-changer in the 90s and forced Nintendo to actually compete in a market where they didn't need to, and the resulting competition upped the quality of both the Genesis and (later) the SNES. It also provided (for those looking for it) an edgier, more "mature" alternative to Nintendo's family-friendly offering (see - the original Mortal Kombat). What was the PS4's influence? The death of physical games complete on disk? The N64 being anywhere on a "top 10 important consoles" also has me scratching my head. The only lasting power the system had in terms of making an influence on the industry was Mario 64 showing how 3D platformers should be done, and Goldeneye laying the groundwork for console shooters. Everything else - the squid controller, the cartridges, etc. was scrapped. Combined with its small library (even smaller when you factor the games anyone cares about), lack of JRPGs, and I don't see how this console was massively influencial. Mario 64 was very important, but it's not enough to carry the system.

not liking it or caring about it is one thing, but when the topic is "most important gaming consoles of all time", N64 should be near the top bc of how it laid out the blueprint on how to make polygon based games. It didn't invent polygon based games, but how they control and how we play them today is almost all based on what the N64 Invented in its library. BTW, Most games of today are polygon based, so yes, the N64 is hugely important.

Well to me the n64 is important because mario 64 showed why a analog stick was needed how to controls a 3d / some what open world better. Some games are just not fun at all playing with a d pad. For me it's all about forward thinking with how to control games that are no longer 2 d and other addons like rumble showing why it's useful. Sony copied it after all.

The SNES got the rare big 3 right: Great first party support, great 3rd party support, and was graphically/audibly superior to its competition. It deserves to be where it's at. Nintendo hasn't been able to nab the big 3 ever again since.

Sega Genesis IMO should be top 5, both for the overall quality of its library AND its importance. That system kept Nintendo honest and forced them to compete compared to the NES days, when they virtually monopolized the home console market and strong-armed third parties.
