Im so glad u mentioned Deep Cover. I had never seen it and bought it used in its WB cardboard snap case (which i have a soft spot for), and man i was like, "how is this not known as one of the better gangster flicks out there?!" Hence so glad it perked up ur ears too.

I've been out of the movie buying scene for a few years due to caring for mum in her final years , but as ever your channel has got me back,as ever great stuff, now I will be going back to all the stuff I've missed on your channel,o dear empty the bank account again.

Criterion aside, the release that stood out to me as the best of last year was THE PAWNBROKER from BFI. One of the most affecting film watching experiences I've ever had. Lumet was a genius

I knew, starting to watch this, that I won't care for most of the titles, seeing some of your collection in earlier videos. But, I'm extremely glad you mentioned Southland Tales, one of my all-time favorite movies, I even have the three comic prequels. Glad Arrow did a special edition, with a new documentary and a longer Cannes cut of the film. First Blu-ray already added to DVD's initial special features the audio commentary from the French DVD, and the scans of those comics. Also agree about Deep Cover, was waiting for it to come out on Blu-ray, and didn't even hope for a Criterion level release!

Great selection of titles across the major boutique labels. I have the Great Silence and will watch it sooner rather than later. I actually watched 20th Century this week and it was a revelation. One of the best screwball comedies I have seen! Need that Madchen In Uniform disc, heard something but praises for it. Thanks for sharing pal 👍

Really love Southland Tales. I was able to see the longer version for the first time on the arrow release and I thought it was the better version, for the first time I felt I understood more of the movie... it is amazing!

Good list Elliott and I did pick up pretty much all of those releases except those BFI ones. And also the Masque of the Red Death as I already have the Shout Factory Vincent Price sets though this Studio Canal release probably has a newer and much nicer transfer? Man I am definitely getting old.... I can still remember going to watch Deep Cover in the cinema when it came out! One release you didn't mention that was particularly fond of in 2021 was Arrow's Cold War Creatures box set. I had a lot fun with that but as you say it was a release with lots of great special features which reach you a lot about that period. I know that you mean about the cost of getting all these Boutique releases. I've had to really cut down as there's just way too much coming out to cope with financially let alone storage wise. I get the odd VS, Severin etc title but it's very few and far between. Look forward to your next vid.

Def for the Zhang Yimou and Gong Li set! I have been *waiting* for quite a while for Raise the Red Lantern to come to Blu Ray, and now it's *finally* here in that set, along with many other great-sounding films! I'm getting it for my birthday in a couple weeks and I'm very excited ^_^

They couldn't be more different, but the two I had most fun with in 2021 were Eureka's Inner Sanctum series - which I was totally unfamiliar with - and Arrow's Shawscope Volume 1 - featuring seminal classics (King Boxer), hidden gems (Shaolin Temple) and genuine oddities (Mighty Peking Man).

Best Uk channel out there.. 💓 Second only only to films at home! Worldwide. No diss intended 🎥

Agree about BFI, they've done some great stuff the last year. Shout out to I Start Counting!, a great release and a wonderful little film. Got most of the releases you listed, but my personal favourite buy of the year (although not strictly a "new" release) was Criterions 4k release of The Red Shoes.

Love the video, Elliot. I’m curious as to how you digest all of the bonus features on these blu-rays. Do you spend a full day watching the movie followed immediately by the bonus features, commentaries, etc., or do you hold off and watch them all over an extended period of time?

Fantastic list and not a film I could disagree with from the list at all. Haven't seen Babymother as I was due to get it for review and didn't buy it (and then didn't show up) but its on the list! Delighted to see you highlight BFI in general as they don't get the love and care that they deserve. Friendship's Death is well worth checking out as well as someone who appreciates something a bit different. Great to see Madchen featured so prominently as well as Deep Cover. I thought Criterion knocked it out of the part this year as well. Looking forward to seeing what you enjoyed out of the slate. Cheers Elliott. :)

Great video, I put deep cover and Southland tales on hold at the library! I think the only movie I’ve seen that you mentioned is the great silence which I enjoyed. As for boutique blu rays that came out last year I got the criterion 4k mulholand drive and I don’t know if the version of Goodbye dragon inn came out last year or 2020 but I love it.

Red Sorghum actually has been released twice in English friendly editions prior to the Collaborations set. Originally from World Cinema Library (how I originally saw it) and later by Nova Media.

I thought one of your two BFI releases from last year would be their excellent release of Mike Leigh's Naked which has a brand-new 4k restoration which blows the previous Criterion release out of the water. I also loved their release of The Pawnbroker & have enjoyed picking up their first couple of volumes of the Bergman sets. BFI had a great year. Some of the other titles that excited me last year, as often is the case most years, is Warner Archive but of course they were imports rather than UK releases.

Some great releases here; I have six of them (not all watched yet) and at least two others on the ever-growing wants list! Must agree wholeheartedly with the person here praising BFI for their output last year; the already mentioned 'I Start Counting', along with 'Invasion Of The Body Snatchers', 'Piccadilly', 'Radio On' (one of my top discoveries of the year), and the 'Marlene Dietrich at Universal' set, being a nice companion to the Dietrich/Sternberg set from either Criterion or Indicator depending on choice. I must also give mentions to a couple of other discoveries for me, such as 'Viy' (MoC) and 'Giants And Toys' (Arrow).

I got Collaborations also and like it a lot. My favorite movie so far is Raise The Red Lantern. Another box set that I was glad to get was Mae West In Hollywood from Indicator. I hope they do more box sets from stars of that era.

Did you recently switch to a greenscreen background or did you switch camera? If you switched camera's, that focus is insane, as in amazing!

I know many people have issues with it, but the world of wong kar wai is hands down my favorite release of the year. I loved in the mood for love and Chungking express but hadn’t had a chance to see his other films and was delighted with this box set. Personally nothing felt missing and while some of the changes to films I’d seen I could notice they didn’t detract from the films themselves. I would also like to mention from criterion three films by Luis Buñuel, irma vep, and of course citizen Kane. Other than criterion most of my purchases of other labels were mostly older titles. So i want to mention les vampires from kino and the pillow book from indicator

How about making a video for every year since...let's say... the last 10 or 20 years, where you put only the best 10 or 20 "first blu ray releases"? Things similar to this Yimou box. An exceptional find for me from your video. Thank you very much for that ¡amigo! mentiones: When I say "first on blu ray release" I mean the old movies, not the new ones, just out of the market, except maby the exclusive releases like Criterion's Uncut Gems which will not have another version of this movie on blu ray, from any other lable. 😉

Great list. I would add the Bong Joon Ho boxset from Artificial Eye. Memories of Murder, Parasite and The Host are three of my favourite films of all time. What a director and what a set!

Damn...no love for horror...feel like synapses ' Demons box set (and even the Arrow one) should have had a shout out...also Vinegar Syndrome releasing the long sought out rare and out of print Ticks on 4k...the Evil Dead Groovy Collection box set looks amazing on my shelf in the man cave too...horror needs more love man...I know u are a Criterion kinda dude but hell Criterion has Saló and Anti-Christ so u gotta have some sort of a tolerance for the strange and obscure in the horror genre

Southland Tales is definitely a different film. It’s both terrible and great - it has so many interesting ideas and scenes, but doesn’t quite always make it work. Regardless, I do think it’s a special film. If you haven’t looked into it, all the parallel media like the graphic novel help to make the plot more sensible; I’m guessing the story would’ve made way more sense of it hadn’t been cut down so much. But props to you for pushing it - it’s definitely headed for (if not already in) cult status. Side note: “UPU2” is an amazing name for a para military org.

Does the Collaborations box set have ALL region discs?

Personally I don’t know how you can watch all of these Westerns. It’s all yeehah and horses and sand and ‘watch my beer’.
