I think Flander's Field should've been included in there. We still recite the poem every Remembrance Day. Not sure where on the list it should've been though. They're all really good.

@jaredisley-oliver389
@jaredisley-oliver389 4 жыл бұрын
@@oilersridersbluejays it's amazing to note that during this time Napoleon was doing his thing in Europe so the British were more focused there instead of here. So our measly force of a few thousand Red Coat regulars and Canadian milita and Native warrior allinces to hold off the American Invasion without any help until after 1814. One of the 3 factors of the U.S. reasons of war was the British trying to keep the Americans from trading with the French so outside of North America the war of 1812 was just another front of the Napoleonic wars.

Juno, Dieppe, Ortona, Liberation of the Netherlands. 22 years ago (as of 2018), A Canadian reporter with CBC (Now the National) asked the then Mayor of the Dutch town of Apeldoorn why it was that the Dutch never forgot the Canadians. His answer was very simple, very direct. "Because you have to have been occupied to understand and appreciate what *Freedom* _really_ means, and when you do, you never forget who gave it to you."

What I liked about these segments was the various perspectives of all nationalities who came to Canada. That one about the railroad and the numerous deaths of Chinese and Japanese workers really hit home when I was 6 or 7. They didn't try to whitewash history, and aimed to find national icons from all different walks of life. Sure, the acting was over the top, but that's what made them stand out so much. The Women's Vote, Nellie McClung, Viking invasions, the Iroquoi Confederacy, the Winnipeg Mennonites, and World War veterans returning home - those are some of the ones that we watched much later in high school history classes.

I still love seeing these to this day; they're a huge part of not only my childhood but my pride for this great country. Sam Steele, Jennie Trout, Vince Coleman, Terry Fox and Valour road and John McCrae and the Underground Railroad, Laura Secord, Mohawk Warriors, maybe it's just safer to say I love them all; oh and of course Richard Pierpoint, I also would've added him to this list, that's a great one. That's ten, that can be my list.

The Canadian flag one and the Canadian anthem ones would be in my honourable mentions, and I'd push Laura Secord to my honourables too, because I forgot about Winnipeg Falcons, I love that one. And Leslie McClung! Damn. Oh well, they're all great, love them.

I loved these minutes growing up in Ontario, but really, not enough votes to even have the 'Flanders Fields' one in? Little disappointed in that, but it is still a good list.

really? that was #1? I would have put the Flanders Fields one in there, or the O Canada performance, or the one with the flags

It depends on the curricula. When I taught it, we needed to cover many areas from First Nations to the landings of Europeans to later periods. The problem is that we can’t do all of our history in one year. There’s too much, and in BC, the government has the worst Socials curricula in Canada.

The Flanders Fields one was always the most inspiring for me. Canadians were not really great at teaching our own history when I was in school so I knew little before I saw the Heritage minute. I have since been to Vimy Ridge 3 times and visited both the birth and resting place of John McCrae, it had that much of an impact on me
