When family lived in LA, anyone headed that direction had standing orders to bring Ketchup Chips and as many boxes of Tetley or Red Rose tea that you could. Another thing we do without thinking about it is we measure travel distance in time instead of miles or Kilometres. "How far to Swiss Chalet? Oh, about 10 minutes" (I'm told it drives Americans crazy, not enough information, but to us it's like an understood shorthand - ten minutes drive by car, allowing for traffic, and the fact far too many of us have a heavy foot on the peddle)

When we officially switched to metric, some dairy producers tried to pull a fast one, and suddenly we were getting 3 liters (as if we wouldn't notice a liter and a half missing) . That didn't last long, because as polite as we are, some things are sacred. A bag of 3 is 4L.

Living in the southern US all my life I know that even our ways are vastly different than northern parts of the US. So it is no surprise that things in other countries have many differences. As for milk in bags, that is actually a great idea. HDPE bottles are flooding our landfills. The bags would be a great improvement for the environment.

Spent a summer travelling from Quebec City to Gaspe in 1975. Had just graduated high school Everyone was really over the top nice. We were in a converted bus and just sorta picked up folks along the way. Ended up at a farm owned by one of their friends. Partied all nite. Parked the bus in big field and just had a grand old time. Gaspe appears to be as pristine now as it was. Part of the reason you gotta love it.

little life hack about the bags of milk if you cut the one side that you're going to pour from and if you make a very small hole on the opposite side close to the handle it actually helps prevent the bag from tipping over and causing spillage

Whenever my family would go to our lake house when I was a kid, we'd stop by a small farm that sold their milk in bags. They've since switched to bottles, but i miss the bags! They were so cool & unique!

Back in the 1990s for a few Christmases in a row I answered letters to Santa... over the years I'd say I for sure wrote a couple thousand of them. It was very fulfilling. People seem to think ketchup potato chips sound like a strange flavor, but its pretty rare anybody who tries them doesn't actually like them. Milk in bags isn't that common in Western Canada. You can still get it, but most stores only carry milk in cartons. Unlike what was shown here there are special pitchers that hold the bags - you don't just cut the bag open and then put it in your fridge. And the weather/cold seems all relative to what you are used to: I've been in Las Vegas in the winter where its 12-13C (55F) out and you'll see the Canadian visitors walking up and down The Strip in t-shirt and shorts while the Vegas locals are wearing practically parkas and huge heavy winter coats. Around here 13-14C in the spring is a sign summer is coming and its time to get out and maybe go out to the park, take a walk or hit up the tennis courts and baseball diamonds.

#1 has to be the pledge of allegiance in schools every morning… Indoctrination, pure and simple (I am an American… I hated having to do it every morning. Fun, or not so fun fact, the original way was to raise your right arm straight up towards the flag palm down… so there’s old pictures of American kids that look like they were in 1930s Germany! (Once we got wind of the Germans using this same salute, it was switched to hand over the heart.))

Shorts in snow is somewhat sensible (depending on the overall temp).... pants get wet, then you get colder. With shorts, your legs may get a little wet, but the muscle heat when you're walking/running will dry it out, if it doesn't drip off

Milk in a bag existed in Hungary as well, in fact its just recently vanished from the stores completely. but before the 2000's it was pretty common, and every household had the plastic container for it. I believe it was a thing in neighbor countries as well, but maybe they can say for sure.

New Englander who has also lived in Northern Europe here. Being underdressed in winter really comes down to how windy it is. Without much wind as long as you're being physically active you can be comfortable in surprisingly low temps with parts of your body exposed. Throw in a significant wind-chill and the game changes. It's also just easier for a short stretch to be cold for a bit than to get all dressed just to go to the shops down the way for a bag of All Dressed (beats ketchup hands down for chip/crisp flavor) and to be boiling and stripping once you're back home.

Lots of other northern/polar countries have their citizens walk around in shorts in the winter. And the South African national anthem has lyrics in five of the country's 11 official languages: Xhosa (first stanza, first two lines), Zulu (first stanza, last two lines), Sesotho (second stanza), Afrikaans (third stanza), and English (final stanza). The lyrics are sung in these languages regardless of the native language of the singer.

If you cut both top corners of the bag (instead of just the corner you pour out of), as you pour milk out one corner it allows air to enter the bag, keeping it from deflating and slipping out of the container.

10:18 "For Canadians the shift from the Imperial measuring system to metric brought something new: milk in bags." - Wrong. We had milk in bags under the Imperial system. The large bag was a gallon and the smaller bags were each a third of a gallon. When the metric system was adopted, the size of the bags changed slightly.
