It's just hilarious , and clearly no one neither heard the radio call (if there was one) nor saw the car stop in front of them because they were absorbed by the race on the screens

Credit to the pit crew who discovered Gio’s puncture and knew what to do right away, although they didn’t score points it saved his race and potentially a lot of damage, give the man a raise!!

A forgotten aspect of the infamous moment at Nurburgring in 1999 for Ferrari, Mika Salo, who was (as it turned out) running in his final race as a substitute for Michael Schumacher (who broke his leg at Silverstone that year), had a slow pit stop himself. There was a mix of tyres in the pit box, Salo surprised the team by the timing of his stop, being stationary for 38 seconds and this affected the preparation for Irvine's stop as well with the result for all to see

i think the main reason for the irvine shambles was he was on slicks - it started to rain so they quickly brought him in - but for more slicks - a waste of time which even confused the pit crew (i'm sure the guy was querying a slick tyre since it didn't make sense).

@The Piran One conspiracy theory - eddie led hakkinen by the last race - meaning he'd win the title if merely hakkinen failed to finish or eddie finished ahead of him in the race - ferrari wrecking his chances wouldn't have left things that easy for him by the last race.

@@mrgobrien the strategy for the Japanese Grand Prix that year was for Schumacher to challenge Hakkinen, keeping him in second, and with Irvine third it would have been enough to have the Ulsterman clinch the title. However, Hakkinen proved to be too fast at Suzuka to hold back in second and so he won a second title

@@SiVlog1989 yes - i was addressing the allegation that ferrari were trying to sabotage irvine - but a mere non finish in that last race by hakkinen would have given the title to irvine - so i say any ferrari sabotage would've occurred lots not just at the nurburgring (to prevent irvine being in contention by the final race) - anyway which i say was caused by rain suddenly starting but then suddenly stopping minutes later just as irvine entered the pits and that confusing the mechanics etc over which tyres to switch to.

A note on the Anthony Davidson pit stop: He hit a groundhog halfway around the lap and didn't realize he had damage until the final chicane. So he pitted at the absolute last moment to get a new front wing and the pit crew didn't know he was coming in.

The comical thing about the Malaysia '01 one is that The Michael still won that race, despite being sat there for ages. Also part of the reasoning for why that stop took so long was that they were trying to scoop out a metric ton of gravel from Rubens' sidepods.

@@Enpamonhado Kinda irrelevant, we had Gio's stop in Spain (nr 10.), Anthony Davidson's stop in Canada 2007 (nr. 3) and Esteban Tuero's stop in Argentina 1998 (nr 1.). None of these teams are top teams in any way.

Well that's a lie lol there were some great races but there were also many where Vettel just cruised to victory. However the races overall were more eventful than today if that's what you mean

Back in the day I worked on an ALMS team. We had a couple of let’s say quirky pit stops like that in the beginning which we learnt a lot from. Needless to say we learned to have backups for everything at close proximity and everyone on the other side of the pit wall had a job if things went sideways during a stop.

how the confusion could have been handled at 4:58 of this video repair the damage, and add more fuel if needed, then come back in for the tires when the team is ready to switch

In my opinion a most confusing pit stop occurred in 1974 during Austrian Grand Prix at Zeltweg when, due to a misunderstanding with his crew, Regazzoni wasted a lot of time in the box to change a punctured rear tyre. This mistake contributed greatly to the final defeat of Regazzoni for the World Championship, won for only three points by Fittipaldi
