I'd imagine Purley & Williamson that Chi mentioned is a lot worse. Senna was beyond anyone's saving, but luckily for him.. the crash had knocked him out instantly, so he probably didn't suffer. Roger on the other hand was alive, concious and screaming (at Purley) for help. I can't even begin to imagine how horrifying that must have been for Purley.

The guy that save Erik comas is the same guy that deliberately crash into his Championship Rival

You have to remember that they have no idea what s happening inside the cockpit. They could be conscious and getting out. Regardless, they still stop and help, loosing their chance of winning the race, or in Ayrtons case, the championship. Thats the sportsmanship. They thought about the worst scenario, instead of the best one, and went past that "someone else will help" mentality.

The drivers of today are still prepared for the worst every time they enter the car even if it is less likely. Just last year Hubert died racing in Formula 2, and there is nothing to suggest that the F1-cars are safer than the F2-cars.

The years in the beginning of F1 often having 3 or even 4 deaths. I can only imagine that it was more on their mind back then than it is now.

That's how it always goes. The heroic pioneers risk or even sacrifice their lives, just for their successors to find an open road. That happened to F1. That also happened with the first pilots to fly over the Atlantic. And again to the astronauts of the Apollo missions.

Purley lived quite the life, he survived a parachute not opening when training in the army and survived a 179G deceleration in a crash at Silverstone. I think in many ways including this, the Comas incident and Lauda's crash, and then trying to compare them to Schumacher lending a helmet to someone... 🤔

@@evotec4375 I can't speak for Lauda but I remember Jackie Stewart explaining his - if you want to call it - inaction by saying that he didn't register seeing Purley's car parked on the far side of the track; he saw one car, on fire, and he saw one driver, running about outside of it, so didn't think anything more of it. I'd like to think more drivers would have stopped if they fully realised what was happening, and between them they might well have been able to right the car and drag Williamson out alive, but we'll never know, and it just adds to the horrific tragedy of it all.

@@dccoulthard I still have trouble believing it. And it is a known fact that the common denominator of the drivers were that were highly egoistic assholes. This is also why I regard Lauda's save ... well, they couldn't physically drive past because the road was blocked by the wreckage. It would have been interesting whether all those "heroes" then would have acted the same, or if they would state again "oh we saw guy xyz and thought that was his car." Cynical, but to me, not out of the question. Senna and Purley should have been number one, because they actually went out of their way when they could have just ignored it. Senna really impressed me, he really did pay attention there.

Incidentally, between Zandvoort '73 and his own death in '85, Purley also set a record for the highest G-Force crash ever survived in an F1 car, registering a 179G impact at Silverstone in 1977 (for context, Kubica's Canada crash in 2007 peaked at 75G). Racing drivers are superhuman.

It was a pit error not a try by comas. His team didn't know the flags (Red) were out so they sent him out. But comas told in an interview that the Senna he saw when he was being airlifted was a different person from the one who saved his life in '92 😣😣

Iirc, the ambulance wanted to drive over the entire track to get off the track at the start finish zone. Stuck ordered him to drive back and take the Breitscheid exit just 2 turns away from the accident site.

One correction though, Stuck is from Bavaria, not from the Nürburgring region. But he knows the area like his living room as he is so often there and raced so many times on the track.

@@lieblingsleguan1591 the Breitscheid exit remains today, only maybe a 15 minute walk from the site of the crash. To get to the paddock would have been minimum 10 minutes' drive.

The closest anyone got was when the cameras zoomed in so the television audience got to witness what a fucking death rattle looks like. Edit: when I say typical europeans, I am referring to the marshalling and crash systems they've seemed to have in place forever. If I were to have done my racing in Europe instead of here in America, it would've been in Rallying. The salt of the earth europeans got your back in that sport and are on the scene in SECONDS.

It wasn't uncommon back then to see a driver try and save an expensive car from going up in flames, since few fire marshals were present.

Nki Lauda said he couldn't see that there was a driver already helping. If he had seen that, he would have stopped.

Mike O'Brien He didn’t do it to go save his friend as the commentator says. He was accidentally allowed to leave the pits so he could rejoin the grid due to the confusion at the pitlane exit. Comas was stopped on the track because the helicopter was parked on the middle of the circuit.

I agree with Michael and the commentator for this video has it wrong. The race had been red flagged and I think Comes who had been in the pits was allowed to leave the pits. I was sitting at Tamburello for the race. It was a bad weekend for F1 with the death of Roland Ratzenbergr on Saturday and Reubens big accident on the Friday.

That's not completetely true. There were a lot of TV shows in german and austrian TV everytime there was an anniversary of that crash where they brought in Merzario and of course Lauda always thanked him at all of those oocasions. On a side node: the other drivers weren't able to get Lauda out of the car because at that time Ferrari used a different belt lock mechanism than all other teams. Only when Merzario came to help he was immediately able to open it because he was driving for Ferrari earlier in his career.

In the contracts of F1 drivers there is an agreement that the driver only have to obey team orders in favor of the team, not for teammates. Letting lewis pass to catch Raikkonen was a chance to get more constructor points for Mercedes, thus in favor of the team. Lewis giving the position back to Valtteri was in favor of the driver, not the team. It's why Seb got away with ignoring the multi2-1 order.

Not really, you just want a reason to devalue what Hamilton did (which seems a bit unnecessary as its not like he did anything incredible), or don't know how these things work in f1.

Comas was accidentally sent out on the track. He didn't do it deliberately. The team were busy fixing damage from the start crash, they hadn't realised there was a red flag

Yeah it probably should have been titled as '10 moments of sportsmanship in f1' or something similar instead. Giving up a podium or championship to a rival and helping a fellow competitor in an accident are both acts of sportsmanship, but can't be measured against each other
