This whole list is ridiculous. Late Night shows aren't the news and they never were meant to be. They are open about just having fun and entertaining. And saying a host shouldn't book a star they like or want on their show is completely idiotic. If the hosts doesn't get along with the guest you have a major problem. The person who made this list clearly doesn't understand a single thing about Late Night talk shows because most of the stuff listed isn't a secret. Laugh tracks an signs to clap have been part of tv since the beginning.

i went to a tv show taping a long time ago. never did i think i would get exhausted from clapping. show's on. applause. host comes out .applause. guest come out. applause. guest plugs project. applause. show goes to commercial. applause show comes back from commercial. applause. Yo i was spent.

It's unsurprising that talk shows would try to book guests who would garner the most controversy, so that there's more publicity.

Trevor Noah and Arsenio Hall have done a great job of having a good show and are not afraid to speak up. That’s why they survived until the end and others like Lilly Singh and Samantha Bee didn’t.

I always suspected that some of the more seemingly spontaneous interactions would be scripted in advance, and that the audience would be told when to react.

Comedians also aren't allowed to say anything that could even be seen as possibly promoting another network and they can barely get by with something that could be seen as critical of their own network. The only comedians who can get away with saying something that could possibly be considered critical of their own network are the ones who are famous and have a well established reputation and following. Stephen Colbert is one such person. He will sometimes comment on "keeping his bosses happy" and VERY occasionally make a comment that he says "won't make his bosses happy."

If you want honesty and peeks behind the curtain as to what’s really going on, put on some old Craig Ferguson shows. His shows were the best, and felt way less scripted and contrived than anyone else’s.

Substantive content??? It’s a late night show. What kind of substance are you looking for? Also journalistic integrity??? Talk shows are for entertainment. They are not supposed to be viewed as news. And I can’t believe that I actually had to point that out.

Craig Ferguson, Graham Norton, and Trevor Noah shouldn't have been on this list - they're the three best to ever do it.
@MateusHonrado

I disagree on Norton because I find him to be very overrated as well as that I was not happy when he poked fun of Henry Cavill's love of Warhammer on his show nearly three years ago plus he really should just step down from commentating the Eurovision Song Contest final on BBC One as I don't like it when people give him a pass for poking fun of other countries, something that his predecessor Terry Wogan got called out for doing so.

I remember one time I was in an audience in San Diego for show; I'm not going to say the show, but it was during Comic-Con. I'm not a person that likes to clap or laugh or smile just cuz they're told to and while I was in the audience, during commercial breaks this really nice lady who was a stage hand I believe kept asking me "Are you happy and is everything okay?" "You're not clapping and you're not smiling". I was like "Oh no ma'am, I'm very happy, thanks for asking". Personally I always thought that was weird.

I have been to a late night show...and was even invited on stage for the pre-show warm up... the whole show once the guests came out did not seem scripted... but we all know that they know what questions will be asked.... this seems like yall are trying to make people mad at late night for no reason...I love msmojo but I'm sure there are things behind the scenes that happen that is supposed to be for the only reason is to get reactions out of your fans also

If the guest's publicist or agent can't tell them what they'll get when on a talk show, he/she isn't doing his/her job!

It has to be scripted in some way, cuz how else are you gonna manage to fit it all in the same 60min time slot. Sensationalism might take away some journalistic integrity, but why would a celebrity make a public appearance then in the middle of a huge scandal or current hot topic that they are at the center of?
