Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Dark Kids’ Cartoons from the ‘90s. For this list, we’ll be looking at arguably grim - or at least way more serious than expected- children’s cartoons where the majority of the show aired in the 1990s or that are normally considered as animated series from that decade. Since this may include major plot points, a spoiler warning is now in effect. Oh, and? We’ve brought the voices of Pinky and Brain along to tell us their thoughts on a few of the shows! Our countdown includes "Animaniacs" (1993-98), "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" (1994-97), "Courage the Cowardly Dog" (1999-2002), and more! What 90s cartoon do YOU find the darkest? "Spider-Man: The Animated Series" pretty sure was a dark cartoon. Even though humor is present on the series, the tone and some issues are very mature and dark for a kid's show. Themes like loss, grief, corruption, greed, power, patriotism, responsability, abusive relationship (Hydro-Man and Mary Jane) etc etc, are some of them. Also, there's a lot of dark moments on this series, like: • When Spider-Man wears the alien costume, he becomes so dark that he almost kill Rhino and Shocker, and even threaten J. Jonah Jameson and Eddie Brock with violence • When Spider-Man becomes the monster Man-Spider • The first episode of the series, "Night of the Lizard", is dark • The two episodes featuring the X-Men are very mature and serious • The two episodes featuring Daredevil are very mature and dark • Episodes featuring Green Goblin are very dark, especially "The Turning Point" and "The Return of the Green Goblin" • Following the episode "The Turning Point", the series changes its tone, becoming more serious, heartbreaking and dark • Episodes featuring Venom and Carnage are very dark, as they are pretty sinister and menacing villains • Episodes featuring Morbius are pretty dark • Some villains have a very frighting appearance, like Venom, Carnage, Morbius, Lizard, and others • Mary Jane's clone watery death is the darkest and saddest scene of the entire series • Spider-Carnage's redemption and sacrifice is very heartbreaking and dark If you remember another dark, mature or heartbreaking moment of this fantastic series, please be welcome to write it down on the comments.

@@Woozlewuzzleable the X-Men series that Disney is reviving isn't going to be the same show we love. I can guarantee that. some of the shows themes are going to be toned down and there'll be changes so it's more suited for the current state that society is in today. a lot of fans aren't going to like those progressive, inclusive and diverse changes even though that's pretty much the picture that the X-men's creators wanted to paint when they created the X-Men

Little known fact for how Batman, Gargoyles, and X-Men got their dark atmosphere. Most cartoon cells in those days were drawn on white backgrounds. These three were amongst the first to be drawn on *black* backgrounds. It greatly increased the dark atmosphere of the shows before the plot or dialog even began.

that's the difference between cartoons then and now - then they were entertaining for all ages (though some of them were just plainly weird) and they showed kids the reality and dangers that can happen to anyone and how to handle certain situations and resolve them, even if simply talking to someone or being honest. today kids are coddled a lot and parents overprotective. one of my family members is like that, wanting his little girl to stay innocent and sweet as long as possible, without realizing the fantasy world he's creating for her instead. also yes, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill will always be Batman and Joker, no matter who voices them in the future.

@@Gabriel_Santos2001 none of the guns shot bullets. That is a fact. The only "real" gun was the tombstone/robbie ep. There were pigeons, I didn't say there weren't any. I said he wasn't allowed to hurt or land on them. And did you miss the part where I said he wasn't allowed to actually hit people? I never said he didn't throw punches, I said he was never actually allowed to hit people with a punch.

I watched all of those as a kid except for Courage and Hey Arnold, the 90’s was a very cool time to grow up in. It sucks how everything changed after 2001.

Looking 👀 back at the best 90s and comparing them to today's show. I would say that these kids are lucky to grow up watching Paw patrol.

Of course everyone forgets Exosquad. A series with mankind fighting to suppress an uprising for clones they made, enslaved, and forced to mine on distant uninhabitable planets. Came out in 1994.

Yes! I'm actually rewatching Exo-Squad now (free on Peacock with limited ads)! That show was way ahead of its time - being heavily serialized in an era where daytime cartoons just didn't do that - and darker than 90% of what's on this list! Racial politics, major character deaths, that one episode where the mutated alien gets aboard the ship and kills all but a few survivors. Fully agreed!

Alfred J. Kwak is really dark stuff. In the first episodes Alfred loses his home, his parents, brothers and sisters (they got hit by a car) and the main villain is a character shaped after Hitler. He takes in refugees fleeing from a country under apartheit (with white geese and black ducks), saves whales against hunters, ...

X-Men wasn't too dark or above our heads as kids, it struck a perfect balance of messaging heavy subjects but not preaching. Some friends and I went back and watched Ren & Stimpy in High School...we had no idea how messed up it was when we were first seeing it...but I think we turned alright. I think?
