Disney movies that break the fourth wall make the audience feel as if they’re part of the story. This is when a film, TV show, or other medium, directly addresses and comments on its fictional nature. Today, we’ll be celebrating animated Disney films that explicitly break the fourth wall, although we’ll be excluding live action flicks as well as Disney-owned subsidiaries like Pixar or Marvel, so our apologies to Deadpool. yeah ikr!!! Hercules actually should have been on the list! Examples: 1."Will you listen to him? He's making the story sound like some Greek tragedy!" -Thalia 2. "Indoor plumbing. It's gonna be big." - One of the Fates (don't know her name) 3. "I'm a damsel, I'm in distress, I can handle this. Have a nice day." -Meg (tbh I don't think that actually counts as breaking the 4th wall) 4. "Aww, how cute. A couple of rodents looking for a theme park." -Meg 5. Literally all of "One Last Hope" (for some reason it just seems like Phil is constantly trying to break the 4th wall...) 6. "Well, you know. A little dark, a little gloomy, and as always, hey. Full of dead people. What are ya gonna do?" -Hades 7. "Remember like a few years ago, every other boy was named Jason and the girls were all named Brittany?" -Pain (again not sure if it counts but whatever

Come to think of it... early in the movie Pumbaa: "But everyone's gonna get confused! We've gotta go back to the beginning of the story." Timon: "We're not in the beginning of the story." Pumbaa: "Yes we were, the whole time!" Timon: "Yeah, but they don't know that." Pumbaa: "Then why don't we tell them our story?" Timon: "Hey, I got an idea. Why don't we tell them our story? Take em behind the scenes for a more revealing and intimate look at the story within the story." Pumbaa: "Cuz what they don't know is how we really were there even though they didn't know we were there, y'know?"

I don’t think lilo and stitch was breaking the fourth wall... Just because it was facing the camera doesn’t mean they were breaking the fourth wall and addressing the audience... Zootopia wasn’t breaking the fourth wall. An Easter egg isn’t breaking the fourth wall Breaking the fourth wall is addressing that there is an audience or a story being told... Examples of this is when a character seems to be talking to the camera and reacting like their story is being told therefore could be changed. Or maybe making a joke that refers to their story not being real then looking at the camera. Just because a character looks at the camera doesn’t mean they’re breaking the fourth wall. It’s just an angle... Pinocchio, Winnie the Pooh, Emperor’s New Groove, Aladdin and the end of Moana we’re definitely 4th wall breaks Because the characters were actually addressing the audience it narrator...in a sort of self awareness that there is someone watching or telling their story

Emperor's New Groove & Treasure Planet are my favorite underrated Disney films. Little guys of today, those born after these movies have probably never seen them and watched it, especially Treasure Planet. Emperor's New Groove is on Netflix, so there is hope.

And another thing to remember about Aladdin was that originally the producers intended for the merchant narrator at the beginning to actually be Genie in disguise, to the point that both characters were voiced by the great Robin Williams.

I still consider that to be canon. After all, he's the only human character with four fingers on each hand. Plus, why else would he have the lamp? Sure, he appears at the same time as Genie at the end of "King of Thieves," but splitting himself into multiple people is a common use of Genie's powers.

I would argue that there's a difference between looking at the camera and breaking the 4th wall. Also, there's a difference between commentary and a 4th wall break

Agreed. Narration is not a fourth-wall break--even if the narrator is one of the characters. So Jiminy Cricket starting out the movie by showing us the book and telling us the story is not a fourth-wall break. I'd also maintain that the narrator "stopping the movie" to say something is not a fourth-wall break. Is a voice-over narration breaking the fourth wall? No. So seeing the narrator isn't either. The narrator is there to help tell the story. Furthermore, references to other movies or popular culture is not a fourth-wall break. It's merely a funny joke. Yeah, I loved the "So let it go," and the movies shown in Zootopia. But we'd already seen "modified" performer names--Jerry Vole instead of Jerry Vale, etc. So, no, not a fourth-wall break. Looking at the audience is definitely not a fourth-wall break (except maybe as a "knowing wink" in regards to something else). There are plenty of musical dance numbers where the characters look at the audience. Does not necessarily mean they're acknowledging them. Again, the concept behind the fourth-wall is that we, as an audience, are watching the show through a wall that the characters see but we don't. They don't acknowledge our being there directly. They don't acknowledge that they are in a play because doing so will break that wall.

Omg I seriously look through the comments to see if any else miss that hunch back of Notre Dame was not mention at all in this list were it had many forth walls breaks not only with the gargoyles but with in the introduction with the male gypsy sing to the audience about a certain hunch back fellow and his story and at the end i am you a giving great eye for someone other than myself catching that little miss right there especially since Hunchback of Notre Dame was a classic movie and it should be named out of respect classical Disney movie again great job for catching that missed.

I have been watching the animated Disney Hercules movie for over 20 years now and until the other day, I had NO IDEA that Hades had a post-credits scene/monologue after the end of the movie. I was watching the DVD and decided to let the credits roll and boy am I GLAD I did.

I just want to point out Pinnochio has 2 easter eggs: Two books that say "Alice in Wonderland" and "Peter Pan". I know what you're saying, "Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland came out after Pinnochio!" But, those were originally going to be the first two Disney movies, Not Snow white and Pinnochio.

@@Chrisss995 I mean, Pixar IS Disney, but it's still it's own animation studio, so it can be counted as it's own without the Disney name. And so in this sense it's better to create separate lists for films from the different studios, respectively.

Emperor Kuzko is Flyn from Skylanders, Hades from Hercules, and Timon from Lion King, all rolled into one character. Also don't forget that he even snuck himself in Kronk's New Groove, a movie he EXPLICITLY said he wasn't going to be in!

I actually almost began to cry during the Genie in Aladdin entry. Genie was the first time I heard Robin Williams voice, after Genie was Robots, and then the movie old dogs, and my mom then Showed me Mork and Mindy the year he died. We then watched a series of his movies and ended our series with Aladdin.

Ah Emperors New Groove. Easily one of the greatest Disney movies out there. The quality of the movie puts it up there among Aladdin standards for me. Not better than Aladdin, but could be almost seen as its equal if not slightly downgraded due to the story. It's also one of the only Disney movies to still keep me laughing even to this day.

I loved this list especially the #1 pick which is one of the best comedies ever made. Also in regards to Aladdin’s ending they should have used the alternate ending which had the merchant show up again and reveal himself to be the Genie saying “You see things are not always what they appear to be.” The directors John Musker and Ron Clements even confirmed that the Merchant in the film and “King of Thieves” is the Genie. So why they did not use that ending I have no clue.

you forgot the scene in coco were hector is singing a song to another skeleton and the skeleton says hey those aren't the words and hector says that there are children present referring to the audience.

By far the best of 4th wall breaking are: Wreck it Ralph 2 The Lion King 3 (or 1⅕) And of course the Emperor's New Groove And you've left out the gag about duke Weselton/Weaselton in Zootopia!

#8, Duke Weaselton (pronounced WEEzilton) in Zootopia is also a parody of the Duke of Weaselton (pronounced WESilton) in Frozen. Bonus: both are voiced by Alan Tudyk, that champion of voice work!

In Tangled, Eugene Fitzherbert (AKA Flynn Rider) broke the fourth wall by addressing the audience with opening and closing monologues not to mention with Rapunzel's help of her own monologue at the end. And during the song I've Got a Dream, Eugene claims that he doesn’t sing when it’s his turn to do a solo until the Pub Thugs at The Snuggly Duckling threatened him with their swords.

I got a good laugh in the Lion King live-action when they acknowledged the censoring of "farting" in the original cartoon but Puumba was allowed to say it this time, LMAO. XD
