I actually had 3 Soul Absorption in my Thunder Dragon deck. Pairs really well with all the banishing. Not to mention I had Ravenous Tarantula in my Extra Deck. Once I got two Thunder Dragon Titans, I overlayed for Tarantula and boosted my monsters' ATK for game.

Some of these cards where never really good, like card trader, and convulsion of nature.

@@xseaver yeah I disagree and I don't even play competitively, when I used to play casually sitting there with a set card for 5 turns waiting to pull the card you needed was never fun. Playing cards like swords to stall your opponent only ever gave them more time to also play whilst you got nothing. In casual strategies you have stall decks and flood gates which neither are fun to play against, have you actually seen a competitive match up? It's not just cookie cutter decks and constant negations it's about breaking the opponents board, setting up your own and then your opponent finding an out. It isint fun overlaying into silent honor ark and you solved the problem. That took no skill and that monsters most likely doesn't synergize in any fashion. I guess I just have a problem with the semantics of saying a card does nothing rather than any notion of these being good/bad. Supply Squad is borderline broken, I think you even mentioned that in some form, so to say it does nothing just because it's slow is a bit of a stretch. Pot of greed is broken. Graceful Charity is broken. Supply Squad can be a +10 but does nothing because it's slow and they might destroy it. Did you know if you have 3 of them on the field and you suicide something you draw 3 cards? Sounds less like it does nothing and more like they need to get rid of it as soon as possible. If I have supply squad on the field and a face down trap/spell against your MST, what do you target?

I would argue against that soley because we've seen (some) cards that no one thought was viable, suddenly enter competitive play when the strategy changed. Vanity's emptiness is a good example. Came out short printed in 2010, but did not become a staple card until 2012-2013. Also decent rogue decks can capitalise on cards that just don't work in the meta.

Alpha Core the scenario you posted (and pretty much all scenarios where most of these cards could be game breaking) happen maybe once in a lifetime of a player. Stop with the meme bullshit arguments that have a less than 1% chance of happening, because this is not how you measure how good a card is. dzeeff I thought solidarity would be good in agents 10 years ago...I beat blue eyes decks...and that was about it. And I still have issues keeping it out of decks when Lilly Bell with tryce and solidarity would be 2400 direct damage with the possibility of 1600 more after the bounce... I like solidarity...it just doesn't work. Maybe valkyrie's will make it usable with a second battle phase. They search continuous spells, need the attack boost, can actually use it...but I won't hold my breath.

I think the big difference is that modern yugioh games last like 4 turns... It's a very fast paced game, and if your opponent gets any kind of advantage they're going to significantly outdamage the 2000 life points you're getting. Like I just watched a tournament finals where all of the matches ended on *turn 2*, those extra 2000 life points aren't gonna do anything for anybody. In another game, I think they'd be pretty good cards, I havent played Magic but I know in hearthstone 'draw a card when...' or attack-increasing cards are among the best. In yugioh, theres just not enough time to develop them.

Also, while 2000 is a big number, its much less than the very big numbers on many cards ATK fields. You're probably going to prevent more damage with Trap Hole than you are to heal up with Solemn Wishes!

So im a veteran mtg player also, but Yugioh is a diffrient beast. I almost never have games anymore that go over 3 turns. Its insane. Also many cards pop backrow without trading. Ie. 1 for 0. My easy example because im tired is Kozmo Sliprider, Kozmo Dark Destroyer, or Kozmo Dark Lady. These cards have been crept out of the game, but they all are a free 1 for 0 destruction.

I get where you coming from, but you need to consider that unlike in other card games, cards are you only resource in Yugioh. In pretty much any card game such a card would be a more obvious tempo loss because of the immediate mana cost, but because cards are even more important than in other games, and by extension the draw, you pretty much immediately lose tempo just by drawing a card that only gains you LP. It'd be the same as randomly not gaining a mana crystal for one turn in hearthstone, which would set you back pretty hard.

But those aren't the justifications he's using. Yes, he did say those things. But that wasn't the only justification present. Swords of Revealing Light is bad because stopping your opponent from attacking is ultimately meaningless - modern decks don't need to attack to set up their boards. I play rogue decks almost exclusively (Crystrons, Krawlers, Timelords). 3 turns of not being able to attack just means I'm going to stun you or set up boards you can't efficiently get through, then beat you on resources. Chain Energy is bad for similar reasons. Only one LP value matters - 0. Taking me closer to 0 as I set up is irrelevant if you can't push me over that edge. Given that I would have to play 15 cards (assuming none of them remove your Chain Energy) FROM MY HAND in order to take the maximum 7500 damage Chain Energy can do to me and even then I don't care, I played 15 cards that are all advancing my win condition. I probably don't NEED to play any more,f or that matter the game's probably ended by now. Further, most decks play out of the GY just as well as the hand, and Chain Energy does absolutely nothing to effects in the GY. This one might be better with an example. Crystrons vs your Chain Energy. No Needlefiber since, you know, Konami are asshats that have blue balled me on it for about 3 sets now. My hand: Scrap Recycler, Crystron Smiger, Bottomless, Solemn Warning and 2 other miscellaneous cards I won't be using. Normal Summon Scrap Recycler, activate effect (-500). Send Crystron Sulfefnir to GY. Activate Sulfefnir effect in GY, no burn since it's not from my hand. Discard Smiger for cost, SS and destroy Sulfefnir triggering its other effect to SS Prasiortle from deck. Prasiortle effect to destroy itself to summon Citree from deck. Banish Smiger from GY to activate its effect and add Crystron Impact to hand. Set Impact, Warning and Bottomless (-1500). Pass turn. Total damage: 2000. I used to pay 2000 LP to achieve a similar board with Ties of the Brethren, I do not care about losing 2000 LP for a fully set-up Quariongandrax play with a Bottomless and Solemn. Even after playing the Solemn I'm down to half my original LP but who cares? Play through Solemn, Bottomless and a Quarion that banishes 3 if you can. I still have additional plays for future turns. Finally, Solidarity. He didn't say Solidarity is bad because Axe of Despair provides more Atk, it was that Solidarity has an additional condition to provide less Atk than Axe does. Further, the main point here is that Atk and by extension Atk manipulation don't matter much today. He did say this as well. These points were also made in the video.

@@so0meone Solidarity is far better than axe of despair. Solidarity provides 800 pts to all monsters on your side of the field not just one. That can add up and can quickly lock your opponent out of clearing away your own weaker monsters. It works pretty great for my Gravekeeper's deck.

According to these videos it seems the game has sped up so much that it stresses hand advantage and board control over Life Points and Traps. He's said in other videos that Life Points don't matter because the game goes by so fast that you can be killed in a couple turns anyway, so cards that give you LP or burn your opponents are useless because they're not fast enough, and I guess stall cards are so useless that they afford little protection and aren't proactive enough for such a fast game. Trap cards are now useless because they're slow, easy to get rid of, and hard to search in the deck or retrieve from the Graveyard, so the focus is now on spells and monster effects.

Jose Vasquez my friend runs a set in his Winged Dragon of Ra Deck. 5-1500 LP per turn, along with stuff like Marshmallon, the Elemental Mirror Forces, and Draining Shield, it’s generally a bitch to get at him without Heavy Storm or Harpies Feather Duster.

dzeeff not all casuals care about what is meta, they play for fun. Sure some cards are terrible and even casuals wouldn't touch them. But cards like Solidarity used in a pure Cyber Dragon deck, that means no handtraps, will be quite powerful as all the monster you would run would be machine type. I get your point on Card trader though, it is a bad card. Meta Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't interest me as every player is running the same deck idea and there is little to no difference in those deck save the price tag. And that is what separates meta and casuals apart, casuals just play the game without buying the next best thing in the meta.

No. There's a reason cards like Limiter Removal were and still are LIMITED. We already have enough OTK bait as it is, thank you. The video poster's ignorance on Solidarity is astounding. Before Blackwings got smacked with the nerf stick, Solidarity was one of the solutions for the deck's otherwise pitiful low ATK non-Synchro monsters. Its power (like all other swarm decks) was in large but weak numbers. Solidarity took out the "weak" part in case it couldn't Synchro for some reason.

Oh man, I played against a guy playing as Pegasus once, he got Solemn Wishes + Card Trader on the field and gained 1000 LP every turn, and his ability allowed him to look at my cards. How annoying! Can't remember if he beat me or not though, think I might've lost by decking out.

There's no reason to play Solemn Wishes, they just added that Golden Ladybug card which is pretty much better Solemn Wishes

I'd argue that Card Trader is actually still quite useless even at the super casual level. Some of these others aren't so bad though.

Most of these cards are and have always been bad even for my super casual self. They have never been good at any level for any player who's played the game for more than a couple of days and who isn't lying to themselves.

The scenario given does sort of force a worst case scenario but even if you look at it in terms of an even playing field, you have a card that gives life points every turn when you could've had something else like a combo piece, searcher for another important card, hand trap, etc. you're essentially hoping to stall a turn or two, so that your next draw makes up for the fact that you're constantly down one card from your opponent. It makes more sense to have that better card in your hand right off the bat, instead of having one that may as well be a -1 that doesn't advance your game state in any meaningful way.

Rio C I should've stated that I'm not saying it's a good card. I'm not a YuGiOh player at all, more just find some small interest in these discussion pieces. I understand that YGO places it's priorities far differently than MTG or Hearthstone. Those differences are why I dislike playing YGO; namely here that a card that could be playable in either of the other games could be useful because it gives you more of a resource to spend (health, in this case, but mana, now energy counters, tokens are also resources largely missing from YGO), is near useless or unplayable in YGO because combos, pre-deck construction, and OTKs matter more than the flexibility, reactive play, and in-game planning in HS/MTG. (This isn't a bad thing, it just doesn't appeal to me, just as Im sure many people like the lower interactivity + higher deck commonalities in HS and other people like the high tutoring and efficiency in YGO) So, to summarize my point, I agree with the conclusion that it's a trash card (especialy since I don't have any knowledge to refute it), but I'm rejecting the argument used to prove it since it doesn't give any fair playing field to its use cases.

Y'all don't get it. Life points don't matter. At best they stall for 1 turn. If your oponent has a full board of 6 or god help me 7 monsters via extra link all aroung 2000-ish ATK points that would mean 12000-14000 dmg per round. If you draw into your 2000 boost then how would that help you? In a game where you win or lose in 4 turns every draw matters.
