Ben Gardner's head is one of my top 3 favourite jumpscares of all time (alongside the shears in Exorcist 3 and Leatherface's first kill in TCSM). It's also the only jumpscare I ever remember actually working on me (I spilled my drink all over myself first time watching the movie). The prop itself isn't that realistic (by today's standards at least), but the way it just comes out of fucking nowhere is so effective...

In the Alien chest-bursting scene, the director did not tell most of the cast what was going to happen.. I love those kinda rug pulls in movies, another one I like is the scene from Fight Club, where Tyler punches the narrator in the ear. You don’t care about the chest burster, because it isn’t 1979, where there is no social media, you had to see a trailer in cinema, and it was the first scene of its kind. "...has been annoyingly impregnated by an alien". Well that's one way to phrase it. It does cause his chest to explode and then the alien murders the rest of the crew, so I guess that is something of an annoyance. I agree that that would be pretty annoying but I think I might use stronger language to describe that situation.

@oliverholmes-gunning5372
@oliverholmes-gunning5372 2 күн бұрын
Isn't that kind of the point though? I always got the impression that the Terrifier movies were meant to be 50% serious homage to and 50% tongue-in-cheek parody of classic 70s and 80s slasher and splatter movies. They even use that old-timey 70s lens filter to give it that scuzzy exploitation look...
@etrusco2898
@etrusco2898 2 күн бұрын
@@oliverholmes-gunning5372 I would agree, but the moment when he slashes her and you can only see the photos of her family felt way too serious and dramatic. It's as if the movie doesn't even know what tone it wants to have.
@oliverholmes-gunning5372
@oliverholmes-gunning5372 2 күн бұрын
@@etrusco2898 I get what you mean, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing in this specific case. I think the constant shift between loving genre homage and genuine, visceral horror is what makes the movie so memorable in the first place. You get the same thing in the original short film (which was also included in Leone's early anthology movie, All Hallows Eve)- it starts out as a fairly light homage to 70s exploitation movies a la fake trailers in Tarantino's Grindhouse (the splatter effects, the gritty picture, the increasing ridiculousness of the premise, etc), and then by the end suddenly goes off the deep end into "memorably fucked up" territory. Whether you liked it or not, I'd say that tone shift was 100% intentional. I mean, the movie literally ends with the girl in the asylum giving birth to Art's severed head lol, there's no way the filmmakers meant it to be taken seriously throughout.

I remember being PISSED about the Blair Witch. My husband and I had the little kids at home and we spent money on a babysitter AND for movie tickets and snacks. And the camera work made us both so nauseous and then they never gave us the answer of what happened. And then we came straight home because we were both so sick and exhausted from being scared and the horrible shooting of the movie. I paid the babysitter and watched her cross the street to go home. And once she was inside we made grilled cheese and tomato soup and watched The Tonight Show and went to bed. Then a few months later we heard it was all just made up. And none of it was real. At that point we discussed it. No more paying a babysitter for a movie that’s meant to be a real story.

Not that I'm defending BWP (which imo is one of the most overrated movies of all time), but in fairness a lot of movies use the fake "based on a true story" thing (Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Wicker Man, Fargo, etc). It's generally accepted as an immersion device rather than dishonest marketing.

Poughkeepsie Tapes is one of the very few movies to actually fuck me up, and I watch a LOT of disturbing and extreme movies. I made it through to the end, but definitely felt like I needed a shower and a lot of therapy afterwards. Idk, there's something about how real it was, I couldn't dissociate from the violence like I would normally be able to do... I've watched pretty much every mainstream movie on the "disturbing movies iceberg", from Salo, to Irreversible, to Cannibal Holocaust, to The House That Jack Built, to Antichrist, to Suicide Club, to Tetsuo, to Audition, to Guinea Pig, to Human Centipede, etc, and PT was the only one that really made me reconsider my love of extreme horror lol

The Exorcist's director William Friedkin and novel author William Blatty cite not the head spin nor any of the "horror" scenes to be the main reason for the audience's reactions (nausea, fainting, walking out etc.) but rather the medical science scene in which Regan has an arteriogram done on her. The two stated that the blood shooting out of the tubes and the torture the young child having to face are what really made people feel disgusted.
