I would add Danny Ainge. He played 3rd base for the Toronto Blue Jays for 3 seasons before joining the NBA and having a great career with the Celtics.

Didn't end up playing professionally, but Charlie Sheen was a very promising high school player, and had a scholarship lined up to play for Kansas. But due to some run ins with the law, his scholarship was revoked, and he went into acting. Another honorable mention to writer/director Ron Shelton. He played in the Orioles system and made it as high as Triple A, but ultimately didn't make it to the majors. He'd end up making films like Bull Durham, and White Men Can't Jump.

I once read that when they were filming the first Major League movie Charlie Sheen was hitting home runs in between shoots. Charlie actually had a pretty good pitching form in that movie.

There's also another country legend. Jim Reeves was actually a second baseman in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He injured his shoulder and then moved to Louisiana, where he got a job as the announcer on the radio program, Louisiana Hayride. He also recorded a few regional records on the side. But on a Saturday night, Hank Williams went on one of his benders and in need of an immediate replacement, they asked their staff announcer to step in and sing.

Even though this technically doesn't count for this list because he did end up playing in the majors, Tom Glavine was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings and could have chosen to play hockey instead. Obviously he chose baseball and became a Hall of Fame player, I sometimes wonder what would have happened him if he decided to go the hockey route instead. Maybe he would have made it in the NHL and had some success there, but we'll just never know.

An honorable mention if I may: Earl Anthony. Considered one of the best bowlers of all time...bowled through the 1970's and 1980's, was once the all time titles leader. He was a left handed pitcher in the Orioles minor league farm system.

Mike Illitch was a decent prospect in the Detroit Tigers farm system before getting injured, and wound up buying the franchise decades later. He won Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, but baseball was his first love.

You had Charley Pride on the list. How could you miss the "King Of Country Music," Roy Acuff? He was signed as an outfielder by the Yankees- but he suffered a sun stroke. While he was recovering from the sun stroke, he was bedridden and taught himself how to play the fiddle. A year later, he returned to the Yankees - but suffered a second sun stroke and left baseball completely to pursue a career in country music.

My favorite is Macho Man Randy Savage. He actually trained by hitting a tire hanging from a tree to keep his feet grounded, which is pretty clever for becoming a better hitter. I guess some people try this training technique to this day. He probably would've been a perennial all-star in MLB if he hadn't gotten hurt multiple times and like you said, if analytics were around back then, he'd probably have gotten better opportunities and given better training resources, especially since he was a large guy too, he probably could've been a solid cleanup hitter. He even could throw with both hands because of an earlier injury. But being the funniest and imo greatest wrestler of all time and even a hip-hop artist isn't exactly a failure.

Larry Herndon was roommates with Randy in the Cardinals' system, and he has used that tire hitting in coaching in the Tigers' system in Lakeland, FL. They were friends until Randy's death, with Randy's leaving tickets to wrestling shows for Larry and his family whenever WWF or WCW were in Detroit.

the tire drill is done by painting a ball size circle on the tires tread and spin it as you swing it and try hitting the dot. it helps with accuracy and wrist strength as you hit the heavy tire.

The best ball player you never mentioned was Larry Pennel who could have played major league ball but chose acting as a career . Pennel who was given a scholarship at USC to play baseball left to play in the Boston Braves organization in his first year in the Appalachian league he hit .338 with 147 RBIs and 18 home runs .

Not all that famous, but Matt Mauck was a minor league baseball player when Nick Sabin, newly hired as the coach of LSU, coaxed Mauck back to football. He was the QB on Sabin's first national championship team. He made a couple of NFL practice squads after school. Mauck is now a dentist.

Forrest Tucker, veteran of many, many films and TV roles, once told a story of managing a minor league baseball team (I assume he played as well at some point). An ump made a call he didn't like and he left the dugout to argue. But, instead of calling the ump names and arguing with him, in front of a home crowd which was loudly calling for the ump's blood, he started yelling in the ump's face with lines like, "That was the best call I've ever seen!" "You're the greatest umpire in the world!" and other over-the-top compliments. To the raucous crowd, which of course couldn't hear what was being said, it looked like Tucker was giving the ump hell and they got even more rowdy. And the ump couldn't do anything about it! You can't be tossed for praising an umpire. lol

I was a season ticket holder to the Sounds back then, and that was a really good team with players like Buck Showalter, Mike Pagliarulo, Jose Rijo, and Bob Tewksbury. Patterson was a control pitcher and relied on the Sounds' infield to turn all the ground balls into outs. Rijo was a power pitcher, and he made it to the Yankees the next season when he was 19 years old.

Danny Ainge appears on 2 Topps baseball cards as a Toronto Blue Jay's n as we know went on to play for the Boston Celtics. In reverse, Steve Hamilton of the NY Yankee n other MLB teams played 1st in the NBA for the Minneapolis Lakers n was in the Finals n lost to the Celtics.

One not mentioned was Danny Gans. Gans played in the White Sox organization until he tore his Achilles tendon ending his baseball career. After that he went into the entertainment industry and played one of the Durham Bulls in the movie Bull Durham. But what he is most famous for is his long running Las Vegas show where he was voted the #1 attraction in Las Vegas(I saw his show and it was fantastic). Unfortunately he passed away from a severe reaction to the pain killer Dilaudid in 2009.

Elway was a celebrity while playing for Stanford using your criteria. He became more of a celebrity for saying he wouldn't play for the Colts. He only played for the Yankees because he wanted to force the Colts hand.

Missed Lamonte McLemore - founding member of the 5th Dimension. McLemore was the first black to tryout for his hometown St. Louis Cardinals. Later joined the LA Dodgers org. I think it was an injury to his arm that ended his days as a pitcher. The other guys in the 5th Dimension also were from St. Louis: Ron Townson and Billy Davis, though they never played pro ball. McLemore was not only one of the original five, but he was the one to bring in Marilyn McCoo before the 5th Dimension formed.

Late Charley Pride. He sang the Star Spangled Banner before the start of 1 game of the 1973 World Series. The New York Mets faced the Athletics in Oakland. Clint Eastwood of Oakland Technical High School 🏫 threw the 1st pitch. The same school where a few years later Rickey Henderson would attend and later be drafted by the same Athletics. Missing. Billy Crystal 🔮 He was offered a baseball ⚾️ scholarship at Marshall. But, when the sport folded, he returned home 🏡. He eventually became an actor.

And his Dad Jack Elway beat his son's Stanford team two years in a row as head Coach of Sam Jose St! Sounds like he was already in his son's head! And that's why I believe the administration didn't come down on the head coach, because it was a big disgrace to lose a team from that lower conference.

How can you forget Danny Ainge played 3 yrs for the BluJays before going to the NBA and played 14 seasons. He is also the only 3 sport high school first team all-American ever. named first team All American in Football, Basketball and Baseball.

Yes sir! And former USC and Rams head coach said "if Danny Ainge came to USC, he'd be a starting Defensive Back for me!" Saw highlights of him in highschool, and he may have been an All American in both defense AND offense! He also drove the length of the court on the last play of the game in the playoffs to beat my UCLA Bruins and finish with 38 points!
