tomzicare It's a good way to "testdrive" a game. since you only get refunds from physical stores, a few hours to play before you cant refund anymore on steam. Most of the time those first few hours are okay and you think its a build up until you just get disappointed.and the last decade has given us few games actually worth the money..

yah me too you dont buy games anymore you buy 1/3 of a game and the permition to buy all the upcoming dlc's... oh and the cool stuff you dont get them from skills and achievments you have to open boxeds or buy them on steam market or buy packs that have nice stuff ok game industry you fked up a bit imo

What about Spyro 3? - Tells you it's pirated when attempting to talk to Zoe by the balloon area. - Starts randomly deleting eggs and gems from your save file. - Starts crashing randomly. - Loading zones teleport you to random locations. - Intensity of previous three gradually increases. - Sparx's health is limited to Green, making the game twice as hard. - Taking damage when eating butterflies. - (PAL Version) Randomly changes your system language. And worst of all... - Upon entering the Sorceress' lair, the final boss, you are booted out of the stage, and your save file is wiped completely. Evil.

One note about Crysis Warhead, you wouldn't die much, if at all, in a pirated version of it, because even the enemies only shoot chickens.

Basic rule of thumb for games. 1) *DO NOT PRE-ORDER ANYTHING* 2) Always read two reviews of the game you're interested in.

3) Always wait at least a year until all the DLCs are stacked in one major package. Or the DLCs will cost you 3 or 4 times the price of the game.

I only pre-order games from Blizzard. With them if the game has issues, you know they'll be fixed sooner than games from other developers. Plus the DLC from them is either cosmetic or just a way of speeding up the process (like buying card packs in Hearthstone). They try to avoid the ptw like the plague.

because you have patched crack. most of this happend like 1 week after the release of game and the guys who cracked the game didnt now about this things, once they realise this things they patch the crack so it bypases this sort of things

One of the old Football Manager games let you have an amazing season where your players can't stop scoring. Until about Christmas. Then it crashes to a message telling you off for pirating their game

Every game I've ever pirated, I've either enjoyed it and bought the actual game, or didn't enjoy it and just uninstalled it. Demos need to make a return for a reason, and game companies complaining about pirated copies of their games without offering a demo of said game are just pathetic.

I downloaded GTA IV from pirate bay and had no problems with it...Completed it with no problem and bought it years later on steam and beat it again

One of my most memorable gaming experiences comes from a mod dealing with a cheater. I played a bit in the beta of a game called Atlantica or something like that. It was a pretty fun game but I ran into someone I assumed was a bot who was just mindlessly farming the same enemies over and over. I filed a report that I believed I had found a bot and what followed was one of the greatest things ever. I received a response from a mod saying they would come check it out. Next thing I know the mod flys down with angel wings and checks out the botter. They tell me yeah this looks like a bot and then they said they will take care of it. They then spawn in a bunch of extremely overpowered dragons which kill the botter who respawns and returns just to die again. Since the bot keeps coming back the mod ends up despawning the dragons so they won't accidentally kill any normal players but puts a dot on the botter which just instantly kills them over and over until they can ban him. :P

Not gonna lie, I originally bought the original GTA 4 in Steam and there were numerous reports that there's a drunk camera mode. So I decided to go download the pirated version, and man everytime I used that version I still laugh my ass off because of how annoying it can be to players. Smart move Rockstar

The best part is that Game Dev Tycoon included that as a feature in one of the more recent updates. Now you don't have to be a filthy pirate to know what it's like to get your game pirated. I know since I bought the game on steam.

Yes, it´s more like a fun way to deal with early players of pirated versions of the game than a legitimate anti-pirate protection like Denuvo or W10 Store Games.

1:58, I played this game long ago. One time, I was at this specific jump. Some guys with swat armor were chasing me, I somehow managed to jump off the railing, and in mid air, did a flip, turned around, and taunted them, it was an achievement in the game and I kept playing the game for a long while after that hoping to do it again

I used to play a lot of pirated games... from this list I've played, Mirrors Edge, Batman Arkham Asylum and GTA 4 and never ran into these 'bugs'. Only game I experienced the implemented anti pirate code is Game Dev Tycoon.

Fun thing, the devs of Game Dev Tycoon actually recently added their "anti-piracy" touch to legit copies of the game, in a game mode called "Pirate Mode", and you actually get an achievment if you beat it.

Actually, I'd say that downloading pirated games is fully acceptable in these days. Since most developers don't make Demo versions of their games, how else can you know if the game is good and worth buying? When you're given the choice to download a game, try it and then buy it, or buy the game with the risk of it being shit and leaving you asking for a refund, I think the choice is pretty clear.

Plus a KZfaq let's play and your own experience are two completely different things. Everyone has their own playstyle, and chances are, not all KZfaqrs will fit that playstyle, so you need to find out what works out best for you.

The first Vectorman had a similar thing. You could perform a certain combination in the options screen to access the cheat menu including a level warp that could take you directly to the final boss. Do this however and after you kill him the game says "Congratulations now beat the game without cheating"

In third world countries people sell bootleg copies of games. You got to realize in these countries most do not have high speed internet with the storage to handle it. Let alone lacking friends or knowledge around how to do most of this stuff. If you don't speak english (most of the net is in english) then you are double screwed. There were games that didnt even include a copy protection but still managed to get a copy protection through :) Battle over Britain from Lucasarts (on the Atari ST) was such a game. The copy protection was in the game box. Upon accepting the mission and starting from the runway, the game told you to look up the flight path for direction X towards the enemy in your flight docs - aka the manual. There were 2 circular card boards attached to each other, looking like a dial, the upper one had two holes or so, and you "dialed" in the directional code from the game in one hole and got the real direction Y you had to fly to in the second hole. So, if you just copied the game, without this dial, you would not know where to fly to - or run by random 1/360 chances into the german bombers ;-) They manual and the story tellers all put this together in such a fashion that you actually didnt notice you were using the dial as a copy protection, it was part of the game. The game was actually really easy to "crack". NOP'ing out the call to the random generator and quickloading D0 with 0 for X then always resulted in the same Y (dont recall, just always the same direction) flight direction. So no more lookups on the dial :-)

how do games even notice you have a cracked copy? unless they do shit like some modern games that force you to be online eventhoug it is an offline game

@@roberine7241 By hiding a second copy protection check - maybe reading the disk via operating calls at the location of the copy protection and expecting a fault. Just this. However the copied disk would not have a read error on this spot and the call of the operating system would return ok. On a cracked game, where this detection was not removed or found and "treated", the game would know "hum something is a afoot here, so maybe I should change the game logic a bit". Some crashed, or just stopped working. The thing is, if a game crashes or if a game stops - these are pieces of code you can find - even in megabytes of code. What is hard to find is if the game adapts the logic and then for example lets you run in circle in a labyrinth and simply hiding the exit door. These are data structures and maybe more difficult to understand and hack than mere code. Another option was to create a checksum of the code and compare this at some time. Couple of games did have loaders, that checked for the copy protection and if it worked out then unpacked the game code, calculating a checksum while doing so. And if it failed the game would still know something was foul. This checksum-test could also appear in some code, especially from the ATARI ST Megamax C compiler, that only did relative sub calls and jumps - max. +32K or -32K from the current piece of code. So you could checksum a whole library or piece of code, hide your copy protection inside there, and if it was tampered with, some other piece of code noticed this...

@@roberine7241 Sure - you simply pass the login only if your have a payed account status. Now if they just run this online check as sort of a disc copy protection, then it might still be possible to hack it. Because this check is basically not providing more information then "original" or "copy". However in any kind of MMO or Mulitplayer RPG etc. it makes no sense - as the game world exists withhin the server and there you can add checks against cheating or modified code.

@@philippott2784 There's also intentionally corrupting some sectors on the disk so that the disk can be copied like any other disk, but the copy is unreadable, which was a big thing when floppies were relevant, but the PS1 implemented an optical-disc variant of that in its wobble groove. PS1's wobble-groove protection has been long since cracked though, not sure about the bad-sector method that was used by games distributed on floppies during the 8-bit and 16-bit era otoh. At least on some level, I can respect some of the archaic forms of DRM like bad sectors on floppies for commercial software vs. some modern-type DRMs because one, it actually took effort to corrupt specific disk sectors, and two, AFAIK bad-sector copy protection didn't actually break the game that's shipped on the disks that are protected in that way, instead only preventing working copies from being made in theory, where a more infamous recent example of modern DRM actually breaking the games it's saddled with is Capcom's DRM completely trashing RE VIllage's performance on the PC, or even more recently than that is Bioshock Infinite's Linux port being broken by the addition of 2K's launcher.

I didn't install it myself, my dad did it for me when I was little. Then somehow I assumed that it was pirated... Maybe because I have never seen the CD or anything related to it being original

Just because it's pirated doesn't mean it HAS to have the pirating easter eggs. People that crack and upload these free versions of the games usually find a way around it.

Same here, even though I have never seen the proper version of the CD for the game or my version didn't have any cutscenes. I think mine was installed by zip file or self-extracting archive. Lol.

In the game "Stanley parable" trying to enable a valve cheat pack will take you to the "conversation" room, a room that you can't escape until you quit the game entirely. Which has the narrator insulting you and telling you that cheating is wrong. If you try to restart the level while it's still running you're still in the same room and a different narration plays.
