I think for the roles she is also taking into account the emotional and mental aspects of the portrayal as well. The Phantom and Christine are incredibly vocally challenging roles, but they are not as developed as other characters. True, the Phantom is a very deep character, but other roles such as Evan Hansen require more emotional development.
@DawnsonRPGs

While Evan Hansen is absolutely a challenging role, especially for actors in their late teens/early 20's and considering how emotionally taxing it is, it belongs in this list but not at #1
@ngd0711

It's not even half as taxing as the role of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. Seriously, you could ask any actor, young and old, that has taken on the role of Jekyll/Hyde, and they will tell you just how insanely strenuous it is on the vocal chords, body, and mind.
@jeromeah69
@jeromeah69 4 жыл бұрын
Speaking from the point of view of someone who has depression, anxiety and had suicidal thoughts for someone to portray that numerous times a week it is without doubt the most emotionally and mentally taxing thing possible. Not to mention that this is a high tenor role and therefore vocally strenuous. I recently saw it on the west end and was absolutely blown away by Sam tutty’s portrayal of anxiety and depression.

Speaking as someone who has zero expertise in this field, from the outside it seems to be an insanely difficult role vocally not to mention emotionally, plus the amount of stage time this character has seems quite high compared to other roles...when Ben Platt left the role after his run they replaced him with 2 actors to cover all the shows he was doing, I feel like that serves as a seemingly good indication of how taxing it must be!! He is so amazing, I loved that musical..... although I love most of these lol

Hedwig should have been so much higher, definitely in the top three. It’s such an incredibly complex role to play with so many deep levels, not to mention the costume changes! The actors don’t get nearly enough credit for pulling off such a wonderfully complex role. And really? Evan? Yes it’s hard to portray his mental health well but it isn’t that difficult or complex and the vocals are just a bunch of riffs. Yes Ben Platt is amazing but it doesn’t deserve to be at the top of the list. Don’t put it at the top just because it’s a popular and mainstream musical right now. Same point with Hamilton. It’s time to start basing these rankings on genuine reason and not just clickbaiting with what’s popular to please the masses.
@jeromeah69
@jeromeah69 4 жыл бұрын
To portray mental health in the way some of the actors do which is believable yet not offensively stereotypical is extremely difficult. I saw Sam tutti play Evan on the west end and a lot of the small gestures (pulling clothing closer, not looking people in the eye, hugging urself) are things that I do myself regularly (I have depression, anxiety and been suicidal in the past) and to see it portrayed on stage by people that are so young is phenomenal. Yes a number of the characters may be difficult but the actors are significantly older most Evans are in late teens or early 20s

Joseph Johnson first, it’s lip-synced because it is such a high note that even skilled actresses can have trouble hitting and is damaging. so in order to make the show as perfect as can be, it it lip synced. and it is the actress’ voice. next, they have stun doubles walking across the stage that need to lip sync so it looks real each time. and lastly, they have an alternate doing 2/8 shows due to it being vocally demanding (soprano AND opera) and physically demanding (ballet and being thrown around on stage).

@dahliaquincy8097
@dahliaquincy8097 5 жыл бұрын
I don't mean to shove a bunch of facts down your throat to make you side with me or anything, however I believe that Evan Hansen does earn the spot when you look deeper into the character. First, because the actor would have to have a range from G2-B4 which would be a combination of tenor and baritone ranges, as most often tenors can only hit as low as a C3. Not to mention that singing while sobbing is about one of the hardest thing an actor or actress can do, as most people lose their clarity or their voice begins to warp, ruining the effect. Also, while very talented actors can pull off the highs and lows that Evan's character required, staying in that believable character is far more difficult than one would expect. Evan suffers from crippling anxiety which calls for constant fidgeting, facial tics, nail biting, slouched posture, etc. Ben Platt even goes so far as to have Evan almost curling in on himself to refrain from taking up too much space which, for someone with social anxiety, Ben's portrayal is spot on. The crippling anxiety that Evan's character possesses requires a deep and complete understanding of the illness, that without it, can cause the show to look fake or distant. I think that what puts Evan Hansen at #1 is the need to almost take on the crippling anxiety and all the guilt, shame and loneliness Evan has in order to make it believable and effective, and not to mention relateable to the audience, undoubtedly the majority of whom are fighting crippling anxiety, or who have a family member who is. Again I hope I don't seem like I'm shoving things down your throat, you're entitled to your own opinion, however, with how much I love Dear Evan Hansen, I couldn't not fight for the show.

melaa_xo For 5 minutes throw out an entire song where you have to sing quite high and show that the character is feeling remorse, anxiety and guilt? Yes, lots of characters have to cry in stage, but Ben Platt would cry so hard that his makeup would come off, while singing absolutely perfectly. You really have to get across emotions to show that the character isn’t sad that he was found out, but that he feels genuine guilt for what he did and how he hurt people
@michellealexander707
@michellealexander707 5 жыл бұрын
When you take the perspective of the actor they will agree that no role is easier than another. It may be easier for an actor to channel certain emotions, but no role is easy. Actors have to spend a lot of time learning who their character is and how they respond and react to the world around them. Some roles may seem easy, but it's an actor's job to make it look easy. On top of that it also depends on natural or developed skills an actor has when they are given a character. The new emotions, thoughts, and actions can increase the difficulty an actor has portraying the character. So in the end this list shouldn't have truly existed in the first place other than to spotlight that music theater and performing arts itself has its challenges. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.

I'd argue Jesus may be a bit harder to pull off. I've seen a few Judases that did a good job in hitting the emotional beats and being amazing singers. There's a bit more wiggle room for interpreting his character because he's supposed to be a flawed person who makes mistakes, and may have any sort of motives for his actions you desire to read into the role. I mean, you could just as easily play him as a man who's motivated by greed or jealousy who likes to lie to himself to justify his actions, or you can play him as a frightened man trying to do what he thinks is right. A great actor can easily make this role his own. Jesus on the other hand... Playing Jesus requires that you both show a great deal of patience and kindness, but also doubt, fear, and righteous indignation. Play it too strongly on the negative side and you leave people wondering why this petty dude is supposed to be so beloved and thought to be divine. Play it too positive, though, and you lose the emotional resonance of the moments where he IS supposed to show doubt, fear, and pain. I've seen ONE Jesus that managed to strike the right balance of "divine" and "human" while also being an amazing singer. Either way, I'd have been happy if EITHER of those roles were even on this list because they'd be number 1 and 2 on my list, possibly even a tie.

He also sings in so many of Les Mis' songs aside from his big solo numbers. In terms of vocal ability and the ability to emote to portray Valjean's brokenness, nothing touches it. Also because it is such a legacy character, the pressure of playing him is even higher.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the level of difficulty. But if you put professional actors into a professional role.....they know how to handle it usually. But if you start casting 19 year olds in a role with very limited vocal experience, they are going to get destroyed by the role. It happened to so many Elphaba who really messed up their voices. Evan is a different kind of challenge in that the actors they've begun casting don't have the years of professional experience to be able to handle such a difficult role. That in turn makes it even harder
@AvalonMorley
@AvalonMorley 5 жыл бұрын
Evan H. is certainly a huge, challenging role, but I don't see how it's harder than, for instance, Jerry M. in AMERICAN IN PARIS. True, the singing has to be more skilled, and is far more intense, but the part of Jerry literally demands a star ballet (and jazz, acrobatics, and other styles) dancer, with true charisma, acting, and excellent ballet partnering skill. This is stuff that literally takes years, from at least a fairly early age, of intense training, along with extreme natural talent. And much of the singing is done while dancing, making a particular challenge. And, while on the subject of ballet guys, how could you not even mention Billy Elliot, who pretty much carries the bulk of the show on his talented, young shoulders? Another one: Little Chap, in STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF. Also, possibly, Molina, in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. But it's true, all the roles in this video are hugely challenging. Those calling for the Phantom to be on the list are unrealistic; while not easy, it's not in the same league as these.

I had never really thought about Lafayette/Jefferson being up there with the hardest of all but this vid made me actually think more about the role. Yes, Burr does a lot of emotional heavy-lifting and sings a LOT of the show and needs a very strong and beautiful voice. But for Lafayette/Jefferson, maybe consider these things: two separate characters, needs to do a convincing French accent through very fast singing and speaking, very high energy in both parts, may not be the most difficult raps or most difficult singing but do have to be able to do both well, which are two separate difficult skills, and should be a decent mover/dancer as well. I would at least say they are kinda equal, Burr having more stage time and having to carry more of the story and emotion, and Lafayette/Jefferson having more technical demands as a performer.
@ChaoticButterfly
@ChaoticButterfly 5 жыл бұрын
@@mbrusk08 I guess I've never considered a stereotypical French accent to be that difficult. I'll admit he's rather high energy, especially as LaFayette (as is Hercules Mulligan). I think Burr is still a more demanding role, especially since he's the narrator and the primary antagonist. I mean, that "Wait!" in "The World Was Wide Enough," has to deliver an emotional gut punch, and he has to portray a slow ascent from being patient, plodding and neutral to trying to be a bit more like Hamilton, which ends up with him failing, thanks to Hamilton, thus leading to the challenge.

I usually leave it up for personal preference when it comes to these "Top 10" lists, and I am happy about quite some mentions in this, but no Phantom in both male and female list is surprising! Also, personal thought but playing Jekyll/Hyde is incredibly challenging for the complexity of both characters and the switching in between a song, not only the voice needs to change but the entire persona you are, it's crazy difficult to go back and forth and literally sing against yourself with so much power and rage and desperation, and overall upkeep the strenght and flexibility in those characters - I see it that Evan is a very hard role to act out, and I love the musical so much, but (personally) acting-wise roles like Jekyll/Hyde or Valjean take the cake for both challenging voice ranges and the heartfelt, overwhelming acting.

@@elizabethepstein9906 portraying a character with mental illness is indeed demanding and has a great impact on the psyche of the actor, and no way should be belittled, but Jean Valjean is a deeper and more complex character. In my personal opinion, Jean Valjean is a lot harder than Evan Hansen. He has to use stronger vocals, sing in a lot of songs, and be a great actor to portray his emotions to the audience. Yes, Evan has to be younger and his voice (actor) may not be as fully developed as the males who portray Jean Valjean, but they don't need to be fully matured. Their role as Evan Hansen isn't tough enough that their vocal cords need to be as mature as the males who play Valjean. The males that play Valjean had to act harder and work harder so their voice would be so good, it captured the audience's attention and made them pay attention to him. I also think JD SHOULD have been in the top 10, not honorable mentions. The male actors for JD had to act sadistic, crazy, and head over heels, all while singing songs and moving around constantly. They had to portray sadness, anger, insanity, love, and pain. They had to show all these emotions in all the songs (by all I mean all songs they sing, all songs JD is seen or performs in).

Personally I don’t think Jack should be on the list. Yes, I agree, his role is difficult, but there are so many that are even harder to pull off. I love newsies, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just not as hard as other shows. Jack Kelly’s range would be considered easy for many experienced, professional singers, and there’s only one or two scenes where Jack is portraying a heavy, strong emotion (which most professional actors can pull off). I’m not discrediting him from being a difficult role, but it’s nowhere near the most difficult.

The role of Evan Hansen is far harder than any of the ones you listed. Not only is he belting throughout the whole damn show, but he is in every song but one, and the emotion needed to execute this role is insane. Like in the song, Words Fail, he is literally sobbing, snot and all, throughout the whole song. Multiple that by 8 shows a week and you get one of the hardest roles on Broadway .
@SupremeLeaderKokichiOma
@SupremeLeaderKokichiOma 5 жыл бұрын
Ayouba Swaray i disagree. Plenty of Broadway shows require you to use emotion and belt. Those are basics. i can see that it might be impaxctful emotin to some ( though I personally find it exploitative and gross), but it's not harder than Tevye - an older man strugglong with the turmoils of having a familg in a difficult time period, or the Phantom....whic h is the freaking Phantom. You're free to think so, but in my opinion emotion and belting are two basics of any show any performer can bring to the table. It in no way outclasses any of the roles I mentioned with that.
@ayoubaswaray1856
@ayoubaswaray1856 5 жыл бұрын
@@SupremeLeaderKokichiOma Tryna to dilute the role to something as rudimentary as belting and emotion is lazy. Arguably, when you are a teenager is the time where your emotions are the most out of control due to hormones and the process of figuring yourself out. Add that with an introverted boy who has serve social anxiety amonst other sociak issues who just got himself mixed up with the suicide of a suggestive physcopath and you see why this is such a difficult role to take on. Evan literally carries the entire show on his back. Not to mention he has an entire mental breakdown in a 7 min song where it's just him and the stage, crying his heart out trying to make sense of all the egregious things he's done. The reason why this role is so difficult is because Evan is still a teenager so the rollercoster of emotions he has to execute has to be accurate to the tee or not only will teenagers and young adult won't be convinced, but parents who knows how it feel to deal with teens not understand either. Last note, his songs are very hard to sing since he is constantly belting not to metioned because of his social anxiety he has to do ticks and slight but noticeable physical movements to display that.
@SupremeLeaderKokichiOma
@SupremeLeaderKokichiOma 5 жыл бұрын
@@ayoubaswaray1856 O...kay. Still getting 'he's a teenager, he's got social anxiety, he's emotional, he's the main character of the show'...which is great! I can understand why people appreciate it...still doesn't make him outclass Tevye or the Phantom. Listen to 'Do You Love Me?', 'Sunrise, Sunset', 'Why So Silent'...just being an emotional teenager isn't enough to make him outclass anyone, however relatable it is. I appreciate that this show may have touched you and some other people emotionally...but it's not revolutionary. There are several musicals out there about teens with social anxiety and suffering issues, Be More Chill being another, they all put emphasis into their performances, but they can't outclass the classics. As for songs where characters break down and it's just them and the stage...'Santa Fe' is another. So I can't ever agree with that. I don't think we'll get each others point of view changed anytime soon X3

Quasimodo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) belongs on this list. Not only are the songs incredibly challenging, but you have to do them while maintaining a hunched-over posture, which makes breath support far more difficult. Not only that, but you have to be on stage for practically the whole show (basically squatting the entire time), you have to act deaf, you have to act like you have developmental disabilities, you have to act like you’ve literally never been outside and like no one has ever shown you kindness, you have to emote so intensely (both positively and negatively) throughout, etc. A glaring omission, MsMojo.

I don't think those Hamilton roles and Evan Hansen are any more demanding as these others.
