This is what I truly love about movies filmed on location. That years after filming for said movie wraps, people can actually visit the site & see how it has changed over the years, if at all. It's fun & makes location filming, in my opinion, superior to filming in a studio.

Only the Shining TV miniseries was shot at the Stanley Hotel, which is also where King wrote the book. They used to allow people to walk around the halls, but now only guests are allowed. There’s even a plaque next to room 217 where he stayed.

I have an annual pass to Universal Studios Hollywood, so I do get to see the Bates Motel and Psycho House often. They even have a performer play Norman Bates from time to time and he comes at the Studio Tour trams with the knife. Mostly he does come out from Cabin #1 but he has been spotted coming from the house too. I have also been to the Timberline Lodge once while visiting family up in Oregon during the summer. We were going shopping that day and decided to make the drive to Mount Hood. I wasn't into horror movies at the time and I found out about the hotel's film presence a few years later while watching a documentary about The Shining (1980). While not horror film related, there are quite a number film locations in Oregon that you can visit (or at least see from the street): Oregon State Hospital (the hospital from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), the town of Depoe Bay (also seen in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and is also a nice place to visit), and the University of Oregon- Eugene (where they shot National Lampoon's Animal House (among many more films) and has been the location for the US Track and Field Olympic trials in 1976, 1980, and since 2008).

@giggles7179 2 жыл бұрын
@@phoebelajoie5466 I am so, so, SO happy to say that the setpieces for Whoville that plagued the Bates Motel for years have finally either been dismantled or relocated. Having to see those god-awful foam turrets behind the scariest motel in horror film history was just maddening - Hitchcock was surely turning in his grave. And just to offer a bit more on Bates Motel: 1.) The original house is on the Universal Studios backlot, though it has been moved from its original location. The motel standing today is not the original. Filling in approximately half with a matte painting, it was partially built for "Psycho II," and finished for "Psycho III." The failed 1987 pilot "Bates Motel" also filmed here, with a Mexican flair-inspired cafe, fountain, and wall added. 2.) "Psycho IV: The Beginning" was filming when Universal Studios Orlando opened in 1990. That shell (as all of the houses and motels have been) was first painted pale yellow and white for scenes in Norman's youth before it was aged to the familiar look and *SPOILER ALERT* partially lit ablaze for the film's finale. 3.) Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake was also filmed at Universal Hollywood, but the motel was updated with giant letters spelling "MOTEL" along its roof and a brand new, redesigned facade built directly in front of the original "Psycho" house. After filming, Universal moved the Van Sant facade next to the original, both standing aside each other for several years on the Universal Studios Backlot Tour until the late 2010's. 4.) The AMC "Bates Motel" series was filmed just outside of Vancouver in Aldergrove, British Columbia, with the house and motel structures replicated atop a previous landfill. For its first season, the house had no physical roof, the production adding it via CG and finishing the house for seasons 1-5. Aldergrove allegedly inquired as to whether the structures could remain on the site in an effort to boost tourism, but the production declined and both the house and motel were demolished within days of the final shots being completed.

all the interiors were shot in a studio in England, the studio set was inspired by the Stanley Hotel but no actual filming there, there was no location filming except for a brief arial helicopter shot of the Timberline with no maze next to it!!!! ...also a large section of the exterior of the hotel was built on the studio backlot in England for Jack arriving and walking past the maze and through the hotel car park, this same section of set was later dressed in fake snow for the climax of the movie, the maze was also a studio set of course.

regarding "The Shining" location, the clip at 11:49 of Jack walking outside the hotel next to the maze and through the hotel car park towards the hotel entrance is a large outdoor set at Borehamwood Studios back in England, there was no filming at ground level either inside or outside, only some establishing arial shots from a helicopter of the Timberline Hotel.

Bodega Bay is a beautiful, sleepy little town but I couldn’t find anything familiar from The Birds. Whale watching from the bluffs is a popular pastime there. The Point Reyes Lighthouse is only accessible if it isn’t too windy; otherwise the stairs are closed. Did you know there are over 300 stairs leading down to the lighthouse? That also means you have to walk back up, so that bench is a well used rest stop.

Not a horror movie, but Shawshank was filmed in the Ohio state reformatory. Still a cool and creepy location and they do tours. Not paid at all to say this but this video made me think of it

Another horror place you can visit is the Medfield State Hospital in Medfield MA. As scene in The New Mutants, The Box, and most famously, Shutter Island.

This video got The Shining locations all wrong. The Timberline Exterior might be in there for a little bit in Exterior only. But almost all of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980) interiors and exteriors were shot in England. Production took place almost exclusively at EMI Elstree Studios, with sets based on real locations. The Helicopter Shot Exteriors over the titles were shot in Oregon. Anything you see with Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, etc is all in England. The Timberline exterior they are WALKING in front of is a facade at Elstree.
