he was not a big name per blockbuster films in the 90s, he was big to those people who loves good acting.. I love this guys since the day saw that cleft scar on him....its like a scars that will be forever remember when he becomes legendary.. no ones talking about his scars... but we all know its the first thing we see on him and its beautiful, it makes him more sexy and handsome

Brian Collins Sigh... if you knew anything about the guy you’d know he suffers from severe anxiety which is why he is so convincing in mind losing roles... I don’t think that aspect is acting, it’s how he really is. Listen to his acting techniques from interviews, his performances are more about being present in the moment than anything else. His anxieties elevate his conflict more than anything else which is why he gravitated toward “losing mind” roles more. It’s because he’s already a little coo coo in the head. So if anything he’s acting very little outside of his own persona. The best actors are themselves in the present moment making you THINK they’re “acting” when they’re just being themselves. Joaquin Phoenix literally sounds like Joaquin Phoenix in EVERY SINGLE ROLE and yet no one noticed. 🤣

mckernan1987 that was a tough competitive year for Best Actor in 2012. That year Joaquín was up against Denzel Washington for the film Flight and Daniel Day Lewis for the film Lincoln. They gave the Oscar to Daniel Day Lewis but I agree in my opinion Joaquín should have won Best Actor for The Master!

Because 'The Master' is way too much enigmatic, smart and demanding movie for average Academy member to handle, that's why. They give awards to safe Oscar bait movies instead, many of them are already forgotten by now.

Commodus was as vulnerable as he was vicious which ,in turn, gave him a level of complexity rarely seen in most villains. Joaquin took something that could've been cliched, fleshed it out and took it in some surprising new directions.

He plays "crazy" pretty well. In We Own The Night, he had hints of darkness. I can't shake the feeling that he'd make a great Joker adaptation. I don't know how his laugh would work, but his scar on his upper lip and his charisma make me think he'd pull it off wonderfully.

@@ruly8153 Heath Ledger didn't stay in character on set, he was chill and loved to goof around. A method actor never breaks character. Phoenix stayed in character during all "the master" shootings, Paul Thomas Anderson chose him for that.

I've believed for awhile now, he's one of Hollywood's greatest...Commodas alone. But pretty much everything he acts in, he gives his all to. Shame he doesn't always choose to act in stories I wanna hear, but when he does, it's magic. Loved him in the village too... Walk the Line, I mean, I still hear his voice.

People haven't forgotten about River Phoenix, most people realise that Joaquin is a far better actor than he was, though. Also its hard to have sympathy for someone who died from cocaine and heroin

+ChrisFlay the people who don't like him because of his death, must have no clue what a good person he was. He was sensitive and vulnerable, and I don't believe that it was his own fault he died. Yeah he was on drugs because Hollywood destroyed him but someone gave him an unknown liquid to drink the night he died.

Megan Moz Why don't people realize River had been clean for a good month or more and was determined to stay clean for the filming duration of what would turn out to be his last film. His trusted friend screwed him over. That guy took our Earthbound angel. Tell them, sister.

Joaquin Phoenix always delivers. In recent times he was fabulous in IRRATIONAL MAN. Losing River so young was devastating to cinema. However, Joaquin demonstrated his great gift in his early teens and then blasted off with TO DIE FOR. We have been blessed by the younger Phoenix brother’s acting powers. He’s been underrated but is an acting heavyweight now that JOKER has been released. He may be the most brilliant American actor working in films today.

AMEN!!!!! The only, and I mean ONLY, problem I have about his character in that movie is that hes either ALWAYS yelling, or whispering. Nothing in between. But that feels the same for his rendition of Johnny Cash. Those are the only 2 movies ive seen by him yet, but I feel like its a pattern...

I love him in Her, he was emotion, believable, and relatable. He made falling in love with an AI seem real like she was a real girl, he made you involved in the movie, and not want to stop watching it until it was over.
