@@anhthiensaigon For a quarter century, I've lived in Canada's most populated area, the Greater Golden Horseshoe, which includes Toronto (NA's 4th largest city behind LA, NYC, and Mexico City) alongside neighbouring communities. The change has been immense: cities engulfing other cities; recent farmland becoming sites of skyscrapers. Given how many East Asian cities are already much larger than anything in North America, I'd surely find that overwhelming. Definitely a worthwhile travel experience though!

I am Japanese living in Tokyo. The huge population and well-developed urban structure always amaze me. Despite the overcrowding, there are no slums or air pollution and it's clean everywhere. I think the Japanese culture of discipline and respect for each other makes it possible to maintain such a large city.

Tokyo is technically not even a city, IE no "City of Tokyo" exists, but instead 23 municipalities. In fact the biggest City in Japan is actually overlooked due to it being essentially a 'suburb of Tokyo' in Yokohama. Though that does bring up a serious question about this list; 'Tokyo' gets it's "suburbs" counted but other areas like Jakarta are not even on this list.

In Indonesia more people already live in cities compared to for example Nigeria, Pakistan and India, so less people migrate to cities. Especially on Java already such a large portion of the population lives in the city, that there's relatively not much people who can move to the city. In most african countries and India less than 30% of people live in cities, while in Europe, US and Japan, that figure is around 80%, in asia pacific it's around 50-60%. Most city growth comes from migration from rural areas, not from birth rate (as birth rate in cities is FAR lower then in rural areas). So countries with lowest share of people living in cities will have faster growing cities, even though average birth rate might not suggest that. In almost every large city in the world population growth is solely due to migration, birth rate being lower than 2 per family.

If you actually listened to anything this guy was saying, he describes how each city is developing.

So of course they are decades behind in terms of developing their infrastructure to appropriately for the population boom of the last two decades.

Dominance in what? The market for poverty and overpopulation? Or the market for lack of basic human rights and living standards?

Sure, Asia’s increase in population will play a major role in their upcoming growth in power and economics. But the amount of overcrowding and decrease in overall quality of life overshadows the plus of having a large population. So hey, good luck over there.

Well your right, Europe has a lot more wars and none of the top cities are European. North America doesn't have a lot of wars but it's only had about four hundred years to gain population

I live in Scotland which has a population of 5 million, when I went to Birmingham, England (who's metropolitan population is Just under 4 million) it didn't feel as big and crowded as other smaller cities I've been to like Dublin, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Even Malaga in Spain but maybe it's got something to do with more Tourists in these cities what do you think?

All that population growth assumes natural resources continue to be available, not to mention that environmental changes due to rising oceans will not disrupt weather patterns and food production 🧐

I personally think that any city over 500.000 people is already too big, too confusing, too stressful, noisy and polluted for me. But if I had to choose one mega metropolis to live in, Tokyo is probably the only one: not because it's the biggest, but because it's probably the most organized, safe and clean in this list... as amazing as that may seem.

Yes, economic opportunities and employment are all fine and good but there's a price to pay by living in these huge cities that many are not willing to pay if they can avoid it, namely: noise, air pollution, visual pollution, traffic congestion and difficulties in keeping the timetables on time, people shoving and bumping into one another stressing each other out!

Japanese do not speak English. You cannot live in Tokyo like the local people, that means you do what you do in your country.

I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I remember seeing older geography textbooks while a young child in school which listed the population of the city proper at around your mark of 500K. Now the metro population easily exceeds 1.3M, similar to better-known Calgary a 3-hour drive to the South, and also the nation's Capital of Ottawa, a considerable distance across the continent to the East. The City enjoys a high standard of living and access to plenty of parks, partly due to a steeply-banked River Valley, but also suffers from Urban Sprawl because of few natural barriers and an Automobile-centric lifestyle, both of which are only recently being challenged. The urban laboratories of Vancouver, BC, and also Portland, Oregan, USA are seen as likely inspirations for a jump in Built Density and injection of money into infrastructure projects supporting Active & Rapid-Mass Transportation. These conditions make for a safe, clean, place to live and grow up, to be educated, too, but also make for wonderful places to leave: Sometimes for years at a time in search of much greater excitement and cultural exposure!!
