Idk about the "best" but great software, sure. What about MAAT Blue and Orange? Acustica has some VERY serious mastering EQs, Zynaptiq Unfilter, DMG Equilibrum, obviously. Even more obvious, ProQ 3... etc etc. There's a lot of very good mastering EQs out there.

Wow! Wasn’t expecting the RS56. I have it but rarely use it, time to experiment! I’m personally a fan of Voxengo Marvel EQ for mastering or mixbus. It’s free, linear phase, and has mid side capabilities. Worth trying if you haven’t already.

SmartEQ3 over Gulfoss. Interesting!!
@mrnelsonius5631
@mrnelsonius5631 3 жыл бұрын
I bought EQ3 and LOVE it on tracks. It almost always points out something helpful. On the mixbus, my reaction was more mixed. Maybe need to mess with it more but it’s a solid tool for track EQ suggestions IMO. Gulfoss I just treat like a sweetener, sometimes a track needs some and sometimes it’s just not needed. It’s always a quick audition for me
@joechapman8208
@joechapman8208 3 жыл бұрын
Makes sense, I think. Although Gullfoss works via EQ, it's not really an EQ plugin like the others here since we can only directly control the 'ignore' bands. They could have taken a different route with the UI presentation of Gullfoss and we would use it the same way but would classify it in a very different way ("mix sweetener", "mix doctor" perhaps), whereas Smart:EQ could only be what it is. Also, Smart:EQ is a lot better at guessing how to treat individual bands, which Gullfoss is less solid at doing (being more of a group bus or whole mix treatment).

David, I have a question and you’re the only person I trust to give the proper guidance. I tracked a clients vocals yesterday at 24bit/48kHz. Today, he sent the instrumental trackouts from the producer for mixing and they’re all 16bit/44.1kHz. I’m using Ableton. Should I upsample the instrumental files to 24bit/48kHz to match the vocals? Or should I downsample the vocals to 16bit/44.1kHz to match the beat? Or is there another even better alternative? Note, I’m using lots of saturation and plugins with oversampling. I mix and master in separate sessions, and will also be mastering this song. I really appreciate all your work. Thank you!
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 жыл бұрын
Well obviously I'd ask for at least a 24bit version, who works at 16bit still? That's embarrassing. But if they won't give you anything else, always "upsample", even tho' you can't really resample the audio (the quality of those audio files will remain exactly the same) at least you benefit from working at 48 with plugins performing better.
@HollerAtcherBoi

Would combining the SPL with the Chandler be a good idea or too much colouration? Seems like leveraging them both to compliment each others strengths would be a good move?

Excellent information! Even on so common topics like this David has something very useful to say. Somehow I'm pleased to see some unpopular units and their usage. Thanks! The only kind of dark side, in my opinion, is that some tracks have extremly aggressive lyrics. I always try to skip the passages where the artist talks/sings about ... mothers. I think it would be more pleasant to jugde plugins with some neutral audio tracks.

Great analysis and explanation. Man, those mastering before and afters are nuts! Unrelated question: do you ever turn down mixing/mastering jobs because you don't like the music? Like, if you can't stand a song, do you pass on it, or are you too professional?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 жыл бұрын
I do turn down jobs yes, but it's never because I don't like the song, as in a matter of taste, that would be totally unprofessional and sign of a narrow mind, I do instead like challenges and I do try to find beauty in every genre and music if done well. I do turn off jobs if the production and overall quality is not there. It comes a point where it's a matter of brand and not money.
@TroyBlackford
@TroyBlackford 3 жыл бұрын
@@mixbustv That's kind of what I thought you might say, except really well explained to the point where it was beyond what my novice mind could imagine. I can totally understand you turning down "unsalvageable" recordings for not wanting to be blamed for the outcome. But the other part of your answer was also really well put. You definitely do seem to appreciate most genres in a deep way, which I get the impression is really important for a mixing and mastering engineer: not just because you're called upon to work in so many genres, but I can see how being familiar with the conventions of other genres would give you useful insight into mixing techniques common to one style or pioneered within certain genres that might fit songs from other areas of music. Again, my primary familiarity with mixing is watching your videos, so I am not trying to come across as an expert. I only mix and master my own stuff and I was total garbage at it for years. It's such a help to people at all levels of music that you share so many very strong ideas and your wealth of experience so openly on here. I realized when I got back into recording about five years ago that I needed to start embracing the fact that actual mixing skills were required, and it's been a tremendous help (to the point where calling it that is inadequate) to have your channel as a resource. If I ever finish my going back to college for computer science and get a better job, I'd be able to afford having you mix or at least master some tracks without my wife divorcing me (haha mostly kidding!) but now of course I'm terrified the recording will be so bad you turn it down. Haha Thanks for the response. It means a lot because I know you're busy as hell and lots of people want a piece of your time.

Do you ever do EQ stacking or is that bullshit and you really on need one like an SSL G Channel? Or just a favorite eq for certain sounds. Like I really don't like the SSL G on my HH. I don't know why. I am sure it's me. It just sounds like it really darkens my HH and I actually like how it sounds right off my Korg EMX-1. That nice 909 open hh. And no, not for mastering, but during mixing.
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 жыл бұрын
I very often eq stack, probably about 7 out of 10 tracks, so all the above. I definitely prefer some eq's for some instruments, but it's more accurate to say some eq for specific frequencies, and then depending on what I need to do on that frequency(ies). That goes for hardware as well. If you don't like the G (which one then) on the hat it's totally fine, personally the (Waves) G channel and eq are among my favorites for really high top (mixing tho') and really focused a tight low, each one done with the - respectively - multiplier on the high mid band and the divider on the low mid band. Something I really miss on the Console 1. Hopefully they will give me the G (we actually talked about it)
