Matthew Shellman well.. Music has been in history since the birth of mankind. Metal is just a tiny part of it. The main issue I've got with metal fans is that they're more closed minded than they think they're. When you realize that music is a dynamic social phenomenon (It evolves with societys) you stop focusing in one genre (metal,jazz,etc..) and you begin to enjoy music in a different level. I play in metal band but I enjoy some romantic piano like Chopin or Schumann, but I listen to Metallica as well...and by far my favourite musicians are Bill Evans, Miles Davis and Richard Bona

Jérémie Campeau-Poirie System of a Down was one of the most underrated bands, of any genre during their time. I'd absolutely love new music from them, but I have a feeling that like the concerts they've done over the past few years, it'd be a money grab; which would probably taint their greatness. But it would be SoaD so even a subpar album from them would still probably be really good.

The best way to introduce metal to people who are afraid of it is to make them listen to alternative metal, because it mix metal with more mainstream genres, and it is generally softer than "pure" metal. Then if they really like it they can start listening to heavier things. But to be honest, I don't see the point of this video. If people don't like metal, why would you force them to listen to it ?

I completely agree about alternative metal. I have also found symphonic, folk and power metal to be pretty approachable for newbies. People are generally very pleasantly surprised with the vocals and the overall melodies in these genres. Definitely not what the uninitiated asociate with metal. And, in general, a good point of entry is anything without harsh vocals. As fun as it is to shock people with death and black, if you really want to convert them, is better to go as melodic as possible. Out of the bands mentioned in the video, I have had the most success with Metallica, SOAD and Slipknot. As for your question, metal is an amazing genre, incredibly varied and full of talented musicians. It deserves to be shared and, in my experience, people who claim to not like metal, just haven't been properly introduced to it and think it's all angry screams and loud screeching guitars.

No but there are certain songs that non metal heads can get into. The "clean" version of The End Of Heartache is a good example. I used to have a friend who hated metal but she was the typical "it's all screaming" type of person who shrugged it off because of a false opinion. I let her listen to the non screaming version of The End Of Heartache and she really liked it, especially Howard's vocals. I also got her into a few All That Remains songs that didn't have harsh vocals like Two Weeks for instance.

I fucking love metal. But imma still review this list anyways. 10. Mezmerize - System of A Down: Good. Not only do I have it on my Spotify. But I also own a physical copy too. This is their second best album. First being Toxicity. 9. The End of Heartache - Killswitch Engage: Good. Not only do I think this is a metal album for people who don't like metal. I also think it's a metalcore album for people who don't like metalcore. Because I don't like metalcore except for Killswitch Engage. 8. Vol 3. The Subliminal Verses - Slipknot: Good. But I like their first two albums and .5 The Grey Chapter better. 7. Sunbather - Deafheaven: Cool. Deafheaven definently deserves more attention than they have now. 6. City of Evil - Avenged Sevenfold: Not the biggest A7X fan. 5. The Hunter - Mastodon: Mastodon kicks fucking ass for a modern metal band. End of story. 4. Blizzard of Ozz - Ozzy Osbourne: Kicks fucking ass. Not only do I have this on my Spotify. But I own a physical copy too. And not only is this album for people who don't like metal, but I think this is his best album. 3. The Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden: Kicks fucking ass. Iron Maiden made me dive deeper into metal and made me ditch most of the rap garbage I used to listen to. During the time I was into rap. I still listened to metal. But I liked more rap at the time. 2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid: Undeniably kick ass. Not only this is an album for non-metal listeners. But I think this is Black Sabbath's best album and the best album of all time. HM1. Images and Words - Dream Theater: Kicks ass. HM2. Meliora - Ghost: Great. Don't know why but the song you guys showed me from the album gave me a bit of a Faith No More vibe. And Faith No More is fucking great. HM3. The Strength / The Sound / The Songs - Volbeat: Good. 1. The Black Album - Metallica: Great. But their first 4 albums are better. I also own a physical copy along with it added to my Spotify too. This is also the last good Metallica album until Hardwired to Self-Destruct came in. But that's just my opinion. I also think Load and Reload are albums that Nickelback would make. St Anger makes me think Nickelback and Limp Bizkit did an album together. I like a good amount of nu metal. But Metallica doesn't fit with the genre. So far St Anger is their worst album. As for Death Magnetic. I only like one song off the album. Which is All Nightmare Long.
@hoovy1163

TehMysteriousCrow Their worst album is Death Magnetic actually Even if Metallica is my favorite band, they put too much nostalgia in Death Magnetic into it,the riffs are very similar to the first 4 albums and this shows what lack of originality they had Hardwired is way better.

And I prefer Death Magnetic than Hardwired... To Self-Destruct. It's more thrashy and somehow complete to me. The Day That Never comes is in fact my 3rd fav Metallica song and the only post-1991 song in my top 10 list of them. It's a pitty that they fucked up production of this record

Another album that wasn't mentioned on this list that I think would be great for someone just getting into metal would be Judas Priest's sixth album: Brittish Steel. It was the album that really marked a stylistic change not just for Priest, but for metal in general in the 80's. It was really the first metal album that introduced melodic overtones into metal, before that metal was more about sounding strong and heavy. Plus it has some of Priest's best songs like "Breaking the Law", "Living After Midnight", and "United".

I don't think that albums of acts like Killswitch Engage, Deafhaven or Slipknot could be something for People who don't like Metal. You mean People in general and the overall population woulnd't listen to music with screaming and heavy distortion in it. Yeah, they have catchy singing hooks in it but also a lot of screaming and the average person who don't listen to Metal can't stand this kind of sounds. So I think this list just makes sense with acts who have traditional singing in it rather than screaming and shouting. Taditional Metal bands like Black Sabbath for example make sense since the music has some sort of harmony and Ozzy, Dio and the other singers actually sing. Even if people dislike it they would admit it's kinda hearable and not just "Noise" like Killswitch Engage, Slipknot or Deafhaven. When it's about newer Metal I would have included albums like "Ænima" by Tool, "Crack the Skye" by Mastodon or "Purple" by Baroness. Metal with singing and more melody in it. These albums could run in the background while people may say "I don't like it but I can endure it" but most people can't endure heavy screaming and "shredding" distortion.

As someone who used to listen to NuMetal to FUCKING DEATH.... other genres truly blow it out of the water and really make it look subpar. XDa Check out these albums~ Holy Grail - Ride the Void, Devin Townsend Project - Addicted, Ayreon - The Human Equation, Gojira - From Mars To Sirius, Myrath - Tales from the Sand, Be'lakor - Of Breath and Bone, Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe, Suld - City Nomad, Opeth - Damnation, Kamelot - The Black Halo, Mercenary - Hours That Remain, Between the Buried and Me - Coma Ecliptic, Soilwork - The Living Infinite and compare them to Spineshank - Self-Destructive Pattern, Kittie - Until the End, Slipknot - Slipknot, Mudvayne - L.D. 50, Godhead - 2000 Years of Human, Powerman 5000 - Tonight the Stars Revolt, Mushroomhead - XX, Dope - American Apathy, Deadsy - Commitment, Orgy - Vapor Transmission, Static - X - Machine, Element Eighty - Element Eighty, The Union Underground - An Education in Rebellion, Videondrone - Videodrone, Dry Cell - Disconnected, Crazy Town - The Gift of Game, From Zero - One Nation Under, Cold - 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage, Drowning Pool - Sinner, Injected - Burn it Black, Gravity Kills - Superstarved. Now, I'm not going to say NuMetal is omg totally shit lulz; it'll always hold a special place in my heart, but the first group, imo, seems more polished and innovative. Every time I hear NuMetal stuff, I'm often thrown back into my jr high/high school years, and so I can't help but love it for that reason, but it doesn't really blow my mind like a lot of other metal can.

Here’s how my taste in music changed from dubstep to metal. In 2017, I found myself listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana over and over again. I told my dad and he told me to buy the entire album. He said just listen to it. So I did. Then, I just listened to that. Dubstep still had a place in my music taste, but I was transitioning. After that, I find more and more rock. I put together a Spotify playlist and found even more rock. Here’s where things got heavier. One day, I was watching South Park. It was the episode where KoRn came to town. They played “Falling Away From Me.” I found that song on Spotify and loved it. After that, my dad had me listen to more of KoRn’s first album. I listen more and more and love it more and more. Things keep leading to another and now I am a former dubstep fan, converted to a metal fan. Dubstep still has a place in my heart (nostalgia and stuff). Thanks for reading my story!

In my opinion, Iron Maiden is the best metal band for people who don't typically listen to metal. Bruce Dickinson's operatic vocals pretty much destroys the metal "screaming" stereotype, it's not so fast so that people can't focus on it, it's a lot more instrumentally melodic than other bands, the song topics are clear and often have something to do with something famous, and they just have a unique sound that is recognizable as metal but not the stereotypical metal. it's an opinion, pals, you're free to your own.

System of Down was my first real taste of metal back in my high school days (ahhh the memories). I'm definitely more of a hip-hop head but still rock out to a couple of their albums. I like some Avenged Sevenfold as well, don't know much about some of the other bands on the list but I like what I hear.

My ex who would get a headache from trance music(those were the days lol) heard KSE's When Darkness Falls and actually liked it. I just told her the producer of the song went to our college (Berklee College of Music) and she was like "Hmmm not bad". Not sure it's because of Berklee pride or not but she was headache-free and went through with the whole song.

I would actually agree with that for most of the entries on this list if I'm honest. This is more a list of popular metal albums than a list of metal albums for non-metal fans...and the top three are essential classic metal bands that no metal fan can call themselves as such if they don't at least know of them!

The same reason Rush's "Caress of Steel" didn't get radio airplay. The gateway to metal is not in 24 minute metal symphonies. People don't even have time to listen to regular symphonies anymore, you think someone who doesn't like metal is going to sit down and listen to a metal one?

Whenever someone tells me they dont like metal I always mention Dream Theater to them. They are so incredibly diverse I can always find a song someone will like.

I would recommend Motorhead - their first album, also "The Ace of Spades" and "Overkill" Black Sabbath - The album "Paranoid" (If it´s possible listen the song "War Pigs", is my favourite of the album" Iron Maiden - Albums: "Powerslave", "Fear Of The Dark" and "The number of the beast" - Songs from other albums: "No More lies", "Rainmaker", underrated songs but still awesome Anthrax - The album "Spreading the Disease" - Song of their last album: "Blood Eagle Wings" (I think that is one of the best metal songs of 2016) Judas Priest - Album: "British Steal" AC/DC - Please listen to the live concert in River Plate, it´s in Spotify, also the Album "High Voltage" Amon Amarth - Album: "Jomsviking" (listen to "Raise Your Horns", is Fucking awesome)

I agree with the album picks on this list, but as a ''non metal fan'' i was once listening to All the recent new album releases. Taking a chance on one after another, until i come across that will catch my ear, stop me from skipping to another title... Volbeat's ''Seal the deal & let's boogie'' album cover looked good enough to make me give it a chance, without knowing genre.. hearing first song on the album i already knew it was a good decision, and every next song just ensured me in that ;) Without skipping a single song i finished hearing that album and immediately wanted to hear other of their works.. Every. Single. One. And damn am I glad to have come across that band :D Their music is one of my favorites.
