To be fair Matador teachers players the importance of buffs and debuffs in the game, since you will really need it throughout the game if you want to progress mostly in the hardest difficulty, but still fck him. XD

More importantly he teaches you to equip different magatamas (Hifumi in this case for nullifying force) and fuse demons that void their attacks (Uzume in this case for nullifying force and she also has media). The game isn't nearly as hard as people make it out to be, they're just upset that they can't walk through the game with their brain turned off like a Final Fantasy game. I like to call this phenomenon "the Dark Souls effect" because like many SMT games, the Souls series isn't that hard either, it simply requires you to use your body AND your mind, and the games that do this are often the most enjoyable to me personally.

He's a good wake up call for how tough many bosses after him are, but perhaps shows up a bit too early in the game where your resources are extremely limited. Opiomorph from Xenogears, anyone remember that fight? That is what I would call unfair because she comes right after beating Ramsus which he can leave your party with one HP. With good preparation it was just a matter of defending until you recharge enough fuel to go all out on it. Not very hard but truly an unfair fight if not prepared.
@AngelScolarus
@AngelScolarus 4 жыл бұрын
Completely agree on your nominee. Not because of how roughed up your team is from Ramsus but from her infuriatingly infamous "counter" ability every turn. The mechanic makes the fight drag on Waaaaaay longer than it should; as you balance fuel economics and VERY conservative damage output. Play too safe and you'll run out of fuel; play too aggressive, she postmarks the previous turn's incurred damage "return to sender(s)" and wipes your team Although, watching the post-battle cutscene and lore bombshell almost makes up for the headaches...almost

Hrm...for me, Mana Khemia's unfair boss was the final boss that has a phase where you can't heal. Isolde wasn't too difficult if memory serves. And I don't mean 'oh, you can heal in this specific way' no, you deadass can't heal for a while in the fight, any healing you do is reduced to 0, with a boss that is doing final boss levels of damage every turn it gets.

Mana Khemia was the first Altelier game I've played (I got it on a whim for it was on sale at Game Stop and I am a sucker for JRPGs). I did find Isolde to be hard yes, but not unfair, but that's just me, I went crazy with the Alchemy stuff to make sure I had good stuff. For me the most unfair boss was the one before Isolde. It was the one where you had a 2 for one with one that you could only hit with magic and the other with physical attacks? I had to use a guide for assistance there. Anyway, I do hope you get passed Isolde at some point. If I had to pick a boss under these conditions, a few come to mind- Executor from Skies of Arcadia, Eye of Valmar (1st time) in Grandia 2, and Dolce (sp?) from Eternal Sonata. Without your rules, easily most unfair boss is the final one from Grandia 3. Difficulty spike between him and the boss before him goes from a 4 to 20!

To whom it may help, a strategy I've found for Matador. He'll buff his speed +4, debuff him to the point he's at only +1 speed, (this way he won't reset) then buff your own speed to full, +4. (You'll still miss a bit, but nowhere near as much, this is the key to this strategy) At the same time, fully buff your defence while hitting him, don't bother raising your attack, Matador will do that for you with Taunt, which raises the enemy's attack +2 but lowers defence -2. Once he starts using Taunt, go ham, unleash all you've got on him because it then becomes a race to who will fall first. If you fully buffed your defence, then you'll reach full attack before you're even negative in defence.

I don't remember having any trouble with Seymour in FFX or Isolde in Mana Khemia, but I played and finished FFX like 15 years ago, so maybe I've forgotten. Matador is legit though. The other bosses you mentioned, I haven't played. And I agree, Ys The Oath in Felghana is ridiculously hard. That's the hardest modern game (PS1 and beyond) I've ever played. Unlimited Saga have a group of I think 5 mini bosses in Great Wizard's Tower that are very hard when done consecutively, this is mostly because of Unlimited Saga's mechanics that prevents you from fully healing while inside a dungeon. You only have to defeat 3 of them if I remember correctly, but I remember one or two of them being a lot harder than the rest, so if you pick the wrong one, you're screwed, unless you come prepared.

Single hit deaths, self regenerating, all around debuffing, multiple stages bosses, i know the experience. I guess all this makes the boss memorable but in the end the challenge is more about testing for weaknesses and patterns, grinding and luck but not all players love to focus on those. About the bosses i'd say lately my highlights are from Etrian Odyssey games, there are usually a few at any stages (some early, some later) that really kick your ass and if have the right classes/skills already and a bit of luck you can win those, if not usually you search for right loot (exp works to a degree) and hope for even more luck. Also post-ending bosses are very lethal, dragons are in most of the games and you know they'll destroy you ;) Another video could be about unfair monsters within the levels of a game, those that in a way are worse than the boss you'll encounter at the end of the area :P

Easily deserves a like for the Mana Khemia love. One boss that I can never get behind, due to being cheap and horribly programmed is Carry Armor from Final Fantasy 7. I can accept bosses that attack twice in a row, especially if they are final boss or noteworthy villains. You know what I don't accept? Bosses that can attack as many as FOUR TIMES IN A ROW before you get a turn, have the ability to grab/incapacitate up to two allies, and do absurd amounts of AoE damage. Final Fantasy 6 had a 'vine' boss where they could prevent characters from acting for a short time before letting go. It never put a game over on you by being cheap like Carry Armor is. Reno 'can' do that (you have to be very unlucky) and Bottomswell, another crappy and cheap boss for the notion of it having bubble traps and Long-Range only...I can't accept how this boss was made and I hope...HOPE...that the remake lets us kick the bolts out of this bastard. It deserves it so much.

Lamia Queen from Final Fantasy II. Charms your party and casts Blink XVI on herself. So you have to grind magic in FFII. Heaven forbid you're playing the Famicom,Wonderswan Color or PlayStation version where the more of one stat goes up, the opposite stat goes down, meaning you have to grind magic and lose your physical strength. Legend of Mana and SaGa Frontier 2 is what can happen when someone says "no we're not doing that" to Akitoshi Kawazu. Final Fantasy II and Unlimited Saga is what happens when you give him free reign.

I beat Mana Khemia and never new she was that hard. I don't even recall what I did. But that fight in Crono Cross is definitely on my list. Beldr is on my list too. While that battle was annoying, it was actually the one where he first shows up. He appeared at a bad time, and I underestimated his abilities (ie attack that killed someone far away from him causing me to fail the mission). Plenty of Tales of bosses can feel unfair once they expect you to have a handle on the game mechanics, even than some are rather hard. The first Baiten Kaetos had a tough boss against three people who were going twice. It's also at a spot where you can't go back (though they give you a warning). Or that one boss in Ar tonelico 2 that can freeze your game. Now that is unfair for a different reason. Shining the Holy Ark for the Sega Saturn has a boss with two minions. First you have to fight the minions and then you have to fight her AND the minions. The minions have hit all spell that can really screw you over, AND you can get unlucky and have them both use in on the same turn. Your saving grace is that they can only use it once or so. It's one of those fights were once you lose someone, it is essentially over. I could not get past her even after leveling up some and a few tries. Siriliam 2 a small game for android/pc that had 2 bosses. One was immune to direct damage. In the end I just waited for the poison effect to kill him because I had couldn't do any more damage to him, and I drained his strength so he could do none to me. That battle lasted too long because, in this game, poison does a percent of you current HP with the minimum of 1. Another boss, after that one, would drop all your monster's HP to 1 every time his turn came up, and he would automatically go first at the start of battle. The game isn't as bad as it sounds as there are plenty of party setups that can be nearly as powerful, but it was still cheesy. Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, the Behemoth, aka the first battle. Just about the only tough battle. The saving grace is that the battle is over quick (whether you win or lose) and you can try battles over again infinitely in the game. Still, you can easily lose that fight by getting hit with a critical hit that has a good chance occurring at some point though you might get lucky and do one yourself.

LMAO!!! As soon as I saw the title I said “Matador from ‘SMT III: Nocturne’ better be on there!”. I’ve been playing that game since I first got it back in college in 2004, and at this point, I’m pretty familiar with the SMT series and Matador will STILL kick my butt! I don’t think I’ve ever beaten him on my first try in all these years, it’s usually on at least the second or third try, and even then is often by the skin of my teeth! I loved “Ys: Oath in Felghana” but haven’t tried “Ys: Origins” yet. Will have to pick it up next time it’s on sale on Steam.

There needs to be a list of: _"Getting your sorry derriére kicked/losing out for not being prepared/too hasty in J/RPGs"_ You know... Stuff like wasting stuff/skillpoints/items, etc. that either lock you out of secret areas/weapons/characters and/or scenarios or make otherwise challenging but fair fights become the stuff of nightmares and the bread and butter of the gamepad/controller and sheetrock industries. At least in Lufia and the Fortress of Doom you have the relinquished island where you can reclaim some of your mistakes.

@@akillen77 Zelenin is really weird in that unlike almost every other fight in the game, how hard it is is based almost entirely on your level. It's possible to make a team that can take her down at lower levels, but I'm pretty sure that unlike every other instant death move in the game hers actually uses the standard accuracy formula which level difference has a pretty noticeable effect on. This also means that you can actually lower the instant kill chances significantly just by grinding. I came to this conclusion after looking for info on the fight online when I was having trouble with it and seeing a lot of people say that the instant death has a low chance to hit, but also seeing a bunch of people who were actually less under leveled than I was, but still lower than Zelenin, who were similarly getting hit with the instant kill at near 100% consistency. This is pure speculation, but if I had to guess why this happened, they probably have her instant kill programmed as almighty so it ignores all the standard instant kill protection, but with some conditionals added in so you can still do some sort of active mitigation. The devs then either didn't consider or were actively malicious and didn't change the properties of the attack to be a set rate like all the other instant kill skills.

I've got a strategy for you if ya like. (Note: Having the Force Void Magatama is essential). First step: buff your party to max with Sukukaja, then Sukunda Matador *3* times, no more than that. This'll mean that he'll be buffed +1 with speed whereas you'll be buffed +4. The reason this is important is he won't use Dekunda or Red Capote again, keeping him at +1, meaning you'll still out-speed him. Second step: Rakukaja your party to max, don't bother debuffing him in anyway, you won't need to. This is so you'll survive his "Taunt". As you may know "Taunt" lowers your defence by -2 but raises your attack by +2, meaning if he uses it twice after you've buffed yourself fully, your defence will be at neutral 0 while your attack will be +4. Simply keep buffing with Rakukaja and both your speed and defence will be buffed greater than his own. Final step: play it safe right up until he's Taunted you twice. Once your attack is +4, go ham, throw your best attacks at him and *ALWAYS* top your health up with Media. I can happily say that I've fought Matador more than a couple of times, and this strategy has never failed me. *Just. Remember. To. Be. Careful.*

@@Kupomasters57 ah... well, you're gonna want to fuse an Uzumi, she's immune to Force _and_ has media. Also, I wouldn't recommend going up against Matador unless you're level 17 or over. Anything less and you're in trouble from the start I'm afraid. Also, Matador is just the first Fiend, each of them are... not more difficult than the last, ... but difficult in their own way. Matador just happens to be the first one to smack you down to teach you how battles are fought in Nocturne. (I'm a natural grinder in these sorts of games so I rarely take chances, that and I knew about Matador long before actually going up against him, hence my strategy).

One boss that might qualify is Neifirst from Phantasy Star 2. First she kills Nei and then you have to fight her with a diminished party. She hit like a truck and grinding only helps so much and takes soooo long. Best to play this on one of the Genesis collections on Playstation or Xbox so you can have a save state else you have to go all the way back to town when you get killed, which is very likely.

After beating Persona Q2, I now consider Yosukesaurus to be the Matador's spiritual successor since he uses wind and can buff his agility to impossible levels with 'Triple Sukukaja', and you most likely won't have any skills that let you undo that. Then he uses an attack that inflicts confusion on all targets. THEN his friends start showing up behind him, constantly buffing him while attacking you and you're required to defeat them without killing him, meaning your back row can't contribute any kind of attack power and they have about as much HP as he does. No other boss in the game caused me half as many deaths, not even the Velvet room attendants.

Maybe it's just me, but i don't really remember bosses from Oath in Felghana to be unfair. Bos battles in this game can be incredibly hard, that's for sure (especially on higher difficulties), but they almost always consist of bosses performing a very distinct sequence of actions with palyer's goal being learning what to do to avoid damage at each phase. Which is not easy by any means, but this is not i would call unfair, as it doesn't really require luck or grinding (although the latter does make battles a lot easier) But, of course, maybe i remember wrong. Not to mention that diffucluty is a very subjective matter and comparing your experience with it with somebody else's is... well... difficult Thanks for a great video, as always!
