@@mornemauvais5873 Totally agree. FF8 from this video the last boss is laughably easy if you just stock up 99 of all the best spells across your team. It doesn't even take but a couple hours. He isn't very good at the games, and I think he actively tries to not grind to the point that he avoids combat that is really just normal encounters.

I died once to him and realized what I needed to do. Even if you don't use the sword as an item, use Hendrik purely for defense. Spam Forebearance to keep Calasmos focused on attacking him. Even his multi hit attacks will only hit him. He dies, use Serena or Rab to Kazing him back to 100% health and get Forbearance back up. Easiest way to keep all your characters relatively healthy during the battle.

I've beaten Izanami-no-Okami every time I've played Persona 4, and I am a guy who gave up on some RPGs for being too hard. There is a moment during Izanami's fight that is scripted. For Dragon Quest XI, I've raised my team to level 97 and Calasmos destroyed me. Turns out you have to use the Supreme Sword of Light as an ITEM. This drastically lowers his stats and make the game beatable.

all the disgaeas are the same, though. never grind normally, you need to cheat the system and make one super character. it's way quicker and way easier than just endlessly grinding your army. literally the whole point of disgaea is to cheat. you're a demon, you're supposed to cheat. if you change your strategy a little, i think you'll beat every disgaea that you got to the boss and stopped. the postgame superboss is another thing altogether, but the main storyline you should be able to spend a couple hours and then squish him like a bug with a single character. check out some faqs on this, including some great speedruns out there that show how to beat the whole game in a couple hours, or even the whole postgame. it's pretty insane once you get the hang of it.

Hey Erick, great list! I completely agree about the difficulty disparity between regular enemies and bosses in Blue Dragon. I remember getting completely destroyed by one of the bosses around the halfway point when I had thought I was completely overleveled for that encounter, so I sympathize with you there. Whether this will be helpful is relative to whether you ever plan on going back to it, but I recall there being a passive grinding method in Blue Dragon where you learn a spell that let you just run around dungeons killing enemies and vacuuming up job points without needing to fight anything to max out all of your shadows in around an hour. I don't think you could gain experience that way, but that's what I did to power up my party back then. For me, the JRPG final boss that I had rage quit on consistently for nearly 20 years was Zeromus from Final Fantasy 4. I only just finished that game for the first time earlier this year after playing all the way through to the end and getting annihilated by Zeromus in every iteration that had ever been released for it. Thank goodness developers don't make bosses like that anymore!

This game took alot off patience because of the junction system. I'm pretty sure you've seen a theme with Erick that patience is something he lacks. So for him there will always be bosses that seem harder because of him personally and not necessarily the game itself. That's the reason we see so many rage videos from him.
@stevenmorton2059

Firstly, level grinding is not a solution in this game. In fact, many strategies discourage leveling up until certain abilities become available. Getting the best spells and junctioning them properly is key (which I doubt Erick bothered to do). Ultimecia is far from the hardest end boss, but charging in at her unprepared will eat you alive.

Good video! I had this experience with Arc the Lad 2 as well. A slog of a final dungeon and a frustrating final boss. Never beat it. The sad thing with Calasmos was that going into the fight, I knew I was supposed to use the Sword of Light to make the battle easier, but here's the thing. I thought when people said to 'use' the Sword of Light, they just meant I needed to have it equipped and have it be the first weapon I attack him with. I didn't realize I was supposed to go to the item menu and select it first. (Seriously, he goes from the toughest boss to arguably the easiest after you do that)

I remember Enchanted Arms' final boss being the one I never managed to beat. I was still little back then so I suppose something in my party composition was not right but man , I leveled up A LOT using the Casino trick (or whatever It was) and I felt like my main character and golems were pretty strong but then I kept being annihilated by the first and (sometimes) second phase of the final fight. Never managed to beat it again but from what I've gathered Golems were not as strong as the main characters...and I never used them much cause I thought the Golems were cooler and stronger ahah. FF8 though didn't give me much trouble if I remember correctly...surely hard yes but first try nonetheless , I guess the Junction system traumatized my brain so much back then that I eventually got good at it .....but on the other hand I never managed to beat Ultima Weapon (neither of the two)

Make sure you have a guardian in the front row, healer in the back row, i found having a generalist class helped. The hardest part i found with Blue Dragon, i spent alot of time wondering where the fuck i was going, i recall being lost for a while at one point. For FFVIII at least you reached the final boss. I got my team's ass kicked in the fight with Adel, who was sucking away Rinoa's HP. It's still my favorite JRPG (and my very first), but I beat it only with a gamesharked save with 9999HP and power. Only some time later ( after reaching that boss twice, imagine, twice!!! And got stuck with some other bosses 3 times, so had to restart it from 0 3 times), I learnt that one of the best ways it to get GF skills which were giving you STR and MAG points with each Level Ups. But I had no internet back then too and was repeating the same mistake, getting to level 100 just at the first half of the game. So if you're on 100, you won't get any more +1 points to your strength or any similar skills which are tied to leveling up. P.S. Still waiting for the modders to mod horribly blurry backgrounds of Remaster, so can finally try to play it one last "final" time :) p.s.s. Really love your channel man, and most of your videos. Good luck with your videos.

Ultimecia? Really? o.o I mean... the most optimal way to min/max in FFVIII is to just run from every non-boss battle until you have every single GF (so you can equip GF's for max stat gains for as many levels as possible) and unlike trying to do the same in FFVI, it's extremely easy in FFVIII.

@@si-level No I didn't... it's intuitive that the GFs give permanent stat boosts at level up, therefore it would be optimal to level up after having all of them. FFVI was the same way (and to this day that's my biggest gripe with it, as a LLG is really hard there and it's impossible to get perfect stats anyway). I didn't do this on my first playthrough because it's no fun running from everything - I only brought it up to point out that the bosses scale to your level even if you don't level up at all, so a LLG is really easy unlike FFVI. The game teaches you the junction system before the Ifrit cave. I was obsessed with the card game and drawing magic. When you get Aura your first thought is "what does that do?" so you use it. I don't even think I had the internet when I played through FFVIII, as we didn't get dial-up until 2001-2003.

Dude ff8 is like Chrono Cross, once you understand the mechanics you crush it. First, make sure you’ve got squall’s ultimate weapon, & then cast “aura” on him or “holy war” on your whole party. This will drastically increase the chance of your character(s) getting an ultimate attack, even at high health. Then all you have to do is refresh the attack button on squalls turn and keep spamming renzokuken. This attack alone deals tens of thousands of HP, and has a 25% chance to unleash squall’s ultimate finishing move “lionheart” which will hit approx 14 times for 9999 doing ~1,350,000 damage total. Rinse and repeat 2-3 times and you’re good. If you really have that much trouble just let everybody but you’re healer and squall die and “be absorbed into time”, sure you can’t revive them anymore but you weren’t using them anyway, squall is incredibly overpowered and his lionheart move is arguably several times stronger than it ought to be lol

You did use the sword to remove his barrier right? I mean all dragon quest final bosses have a gimmick and as long as you read the item descriptions and a few characters dialogue you find out the sword of light and the super sword of light can negate his barrier allowing you to do full damage to him I mean, I realised in the first 5 turns that his damage output was too high and his damage threshold was too high and remembered someone talking about how the sword of light can cut through the vail of darkness I mean I think you can still beat him with his barrier if you're a masochist but getting the super sword of light and removing his barrier makes it easy then again I was grousy over leveled do to my neratic dq grinding remembering how anything can come our of left field at any moment so who am I to judge.

Lesson to be learned : treat all final bosses as something super hard, then grinds like madlads before final dungeon. And FF VIII? I got all characters to lv 100. 1st time i got lucky that I got Squal and Rinoa as last members standing. With 1 HP left I was lucky that Rinoa decided to spam Invincible Moon so I can spam Renzokuken with Squall until the boss died. The subsequent battles I let members die until at least I got Squall (and if possible Zell and someone equpped with Eden), use Aura and Hero/Holy War on him then spam Renzokuken. I also tried similar tactics with Selphie, it's just that it takes time to search for The End multiple times.

Honestly, the RPG boss I came closest to giving up on is Galdera in Octopath Traveller. Having to re-fight the eight other bosses every time you lose was a pain in the ass, not because they were hard but because they took like, 5 minutes each or there abouts. And then the boss itself is real tanky with some heavy hitting attacks. But the worst thing was that it has a second phase. The second phse isn't necessarily harder, it just has a different focus, relying more on it's physical stats. The problem is, you have to split your team into 2 partys, 4 characters for one phase and the rest for the other. And since the boss is super hard, they all need to be pulling their weight, so none of them better be under levelled or you'll be in for a bad time. The actual fight is still really fun though, and it has an amazing theme. The problem is that absolutely nothing else in the game even comes close to preparing you for this at all.

Fun fact, i played each of the top 3 games of your top for the first time this year, in a row ^^ I kinda disagree on the difficulty of their final boss though, especially on Destroy which i thought was underwhelmingly easy. Pretty proud to say i beat each of these 3 games superbosses, something i usually either don't have the skill or the patience for! DQXI easily had the hardest one, with several unfair advantages (a very high crit rate on aoe spells being one of the worst part)s, FF8's was overall pretty easy since i managed to keep a consistant rythm and control of the fight, and Blue Dragon's two superbosses are a bit easier than other superbosses since while they hit really hard, they don't have much HP which means you can use the good'ol strategy of hitting them really hard before they can hit you much harder x)

The final boss should be a test of all the skills and strategies you've mastered, NOT a forced grind up 10-20 more levels just to survive the first round. Amazing how many otherwise great games manage to miss this simple fact. Looking at you, Pokemon. Zophar from Lunar 2 meets a lot of these criteria. He's got 2 forms, the first is easy while the second is unstoppable and at the other end of a ton of dialogue. Once you're in his castle you can't leave, there are no recovery points, and you need to keep as many MP recovery items with you as possible since once of his favorite attacks is draining 1 person's MP to zero. One of his other favorites is an attack that does 7000+ in a game with a 3 digit HP cap. His head and his four hands all get their own turns. As a result, I'll never beat him. Apparently he's not even the final boss but he's certainly presented like one.

@@WhiteFangofWar honestly a lot of rpgs don't require you to grind and strategies can carry you through. If you think you mastered skill and strategies and reach the final boss thinking you need to grind levels you might have just winged it. you don't really see people use much strategy (people being underlevel beating a boss you needed to grind heavy for), its always just if you lose you just need more levels (then a quick way to call it a grindy game). leveling up just lowers the need to actually have skill.

Even when squall is low on HP and in aura switch between characters till the high percentage of his limit break shows up. Healing and defense for the other 2 and you should be fine. I decided to leave the boss and get some additional levels to increase my damage output. Again a year later I even forgot where the boss was, so I never returned and never beat him. I've been playing Bravely Default II the last month or so, and I think one of the best quality of life improvements in that game is straight up letting you know when you're approaching a point of no return. I appreciated that so much. Agreed on Ultimecia as well. While I honestly enjoy the Junction system of FFVIII (once I finally understood it lol), Ultimecia is straight up impossible. I got to a point where I could get to her final form consistently, but her constant spamming of Apocalyspe and and Ultima always wiped my party away.

There are very few games where I reached the final boss but never beat it. Almost always I either quit before I get there or I clear the game. The one exception I can think of is Tales of Zestiria. Not because the boss was too hard or anything like that. It's just I didn't like the game so I was trying to rush though just to beat it instead of dropping it. I had it on easy mode and skipped most enemies, so I was horribly underlevelled. Couldn't be bothered to grind the 20 levels or so that I needed, so I gave up. Wait, one more example - Yggdra Union. Game was hard as balls all the way through and the last boss finally broke me after days off trying. I didn't find the last boss of Ayesha to be hard, but I always get into the alchemy of these games. I had the last boss killed at around a year and a half game time (out of the 3 year time limit). None of the optional bosses in Ayesha were very hard either. But I suppose I can see having trouble if you neglect alchemy and go in totally unprepared. However, Escha & Logy was an entirely different story. Well, I cleared the story no problem, no difference there. But the optional bosses were plain broken and I never beat any of them. I never played an Arc the Lad game, but I agree with you on points of no return. I don't really like them in general, but they should at least be clearly marked (which modern games often do) or provide you with the things you need like enemies to grind, maybe a shop, things like that. Disgaea 4 - I know you said "I suck at Disgaea games" but I just have to say this: Grinding to level 70 is next to nothing. We're talking about a series with a maximum level of 9999, plenty of ways to level fast, and plenty of ways to gain power besides. Also Disgaea is more about gear than levels - more than likely what you needed to do was do some item worlding. FF8 was an amazing game, my personal second favorite behind FF6. I feel like I'm alone on the internet, but I LOVED the Junction system. I find that I enjoy exploitable progression systems, and in this case I played cards like a madman, turned those cards into high level magic, and junctioned them to my stats to be super overpowered very early in the game. That was my second playthrough though. The first did not go as well. I knew that enemies scaled based on your level, but I did not know how disadvantageous levelling was for most of the game. So I actually grinded to level 100 at the start of the game, in the training area with the dinosaurs. I'm not sure I even completed that playthrough to be honest. I think I did, relying on junctioning the best magic I had access to.

You never beat FFVIII?? It's worth it... It's in my Top 5 JRPG endings. So satisfying. But although I liked the junction system, I too hate systems where the enemies level with you. It defeats the purpose of leveling up, and when the loot scales too, it makes it impossible to find rare, powerful items beyond your level, which normally should be possible and so satisfying to compensate for the difficulty.

I’m a little too late to comment here, but since I’ve just noticed for the third time that I won’t beat FF8 I thought that this was an interesting thing to share: when I was a kid I played FF8 for the first time on the PS1. English isn’t my first language and mine was really terrible back then, so it took me forever to play the game. I ended up stuck right after I got the Ragnarok, because the 4th disk had an issue and my PS1 couldn’t read it. Whatever. In 2010 I bought a PS3 and decided to buy FF8 again as a PSOne Classic. Literally right after I got the Ragnarok and reached Eshtar again I had a freak accident with a power outage and my PS3’s HDD was damaged beyond repair. Since I wasn’t used to back up save files I lost my progress and gave up on playing again. Fast forward to 2020… I got a second hand PSP and decided to ONCE AGAIN play FF8. Everything was going smoothly until this March, when I reached the Ragnarok part. In March I was admitted to an hospital because I got COVID-19. Spent a whole month there. After being discharged from the hospital I was transferred to my parent’s home in another town, so I could have better support on my recovery. I spent the next few weeks progressively getting better until two weeks ago, when I remembered that I’ve never actually finished FF8 and started to look for my PSP… Only to find out that it is nowhere to be found. I mean, maybe the universe is trying to tell me something, who knows?
