Great video, love the 73’ set. Definitely Schmidt best 3rd baseman. Thanks for sharing

Hi John. The amount of HOFers having cards in that year is amazing. No doubt that the Schmidt card is number 1.

There are only a few sets that have more hall of famers. I'm a long way away from having all of them. I'm only at 10.

Thanks for sharing the video, John. I think why the Jim Kaat made the list is because it shows him batting, which collectors are after because not too many pitcher cards are in batting poses. The photo must have been taken before 1973 because that was the year the designated hitter came into play & Ron Blomberg of the Yankees was the first that did that.

Thanks Kevin. That may be a factor as well as it's a cool image that you rarely see for a pitcher. Pop count and PSA registry set builders are probably the main driver though.

Another great breakdown! I like how we are starting to see more action shots from Topps, like the Bench and Aaron ones. Thanks for sharing John!

Thanks Doug! I love action shot photos and the Bench is one of my favorites.

Noticed that there was no reference to the Al Kaline #280 bandaid variation.

True. In general, I haven't included variations in the Top 10, including ones with very low population counts. According to PSA, there have only been 3 that have graded a 7.

Dewey is absolutely a Hall Of Famer. The other 2 guys I'd bet good money on getting elected are Bobby Grich and Lou Whitaker.
@WadeBoggsFan
@WadeBoggsFan 10 ай бұрын
I haven't heard too much talk concerning Grich, but there's lots of support for Whitaker considering Trammell is in.
@forgerelli1

@@WadeBoggsFan Grich has a 71.1 WAR. Better than anyone since 1900 that isn't already in with no steroids other than Lou Whitaker. Whitaker has 75.1 WAR, 4.5 more than Trammell. For me anyone with 70+ WAR should probably be in. There are a ton of guys with 60-70 that deserve a lot more consideration, like Willie Randolph and Craig Nettles.

I don’t follow WAR that much so maybe that’s why. My thoughts on Rose, Evans, and Munson are more sentimental.

Jim Kaat a surprise.

I was surprised as well. Just shows the power of Pop counts and PSA registry collectors. I'm sure there's lots of interest when his cards come up for sale, regardless of the year. Just check out my latest video on my complete 1978 Topps HOF registry set in which the last card I needed was the Kaat.

Are you “most people” John? Would you consider Mike Schmidt the best 3rd Baseman ever? Or would you stick with your man Wade Boggs? I was surprised to see Jim Kaat make the list. Thanks for sharing.
@WadeBoggsFan
@WadeBoggsFan 10 ай бұрын
Thanks RJ. Yes. I concede that Schmidt was a better third baseman than Boggs. Boggs is still my man though. 😂 Not 100% surprised with Kaat as his cards have been in demand since he got elected to the hall and there aren’t many that have been graded.

@@WadeBoggsFan John - Not sure if you have seen some of my recent posts to your channel. Found an oddball Boggs item I wanted to verify that you have. Found a guy who has a manufactured cassette tape of Wade Boggs singing Happy Birthday. Produced in the early ‘90s and released by MLB featuring a number of different stars of the day. It’s still in the original packaging. Just wanted to make sure you already have it. It’s just something I’ve never seen.

Hi RJ. I did see your earlier post and was going to reply, but then for some reason, it disappeared. Thanks for posting again. Yes, I have the cassette in its original packaging. Very cool item. If I ever want to get a second one I'll know who to reach out to. Thanks!

I have to say in all fairness that the 73 Munson, 73 Gossage, 73 yaz are way mor valueble than the Kaat? the Kaat is way way more valeble than the Fred Beene, Barry Bonell and common player like that but not over players like Mr. October? questions 1. if you walked into a card store in the Philly area any part of that area and they had a Schmidt rookie graded a 10 whet's it worth out there? your psa 10 goes around the country what's one in philly worth guaranteed a 10? 2. which players from this set have more interest for collectors players that started out earlier like Yaz, Mays , Clemente , Homerun king or players that are 70's players like Ryan , Munson, Bench , Seaver, Fisk? fom this set.
@WadeBoggsFan
@WadeBoggsFan 10 ай бұрын
You have to understand that with these lists, I'm only going off of reported sales. So people are currently paying more for a graded Kaat then they are for a Munson, Gossage, and Yaz. Now when you are talking about ungraded cards, you would be right that those three players sell for more than a Kaat. Grading prices are very different than cards that are not graded. You cannot compare the two. 1. There would definitely be a premium you would have to pay if you picked up a Schmidt rookie in a 10 in the Philly area. But situations like that don't exist as often since eBay came along. Before, you would either have to buy your cards at your LCS or go to a show in your area. But now, people can go on eBay (or other auction houses) and pick up cards. So someone from the Philly area would probably just buy a Schmidt card on eBay and not have to pay a higher price than what it would be at their LCS. 2. Generally, players like Mays, Clemente, Aaron, and Ryan are more popular with collectors than Yaz, Munson, Bench, Seaver, and Fisk. The timeframe of when they started playing is not relevant. Sure, some collectors might prefer players who played when they were young or remember seeing play over others that had retired, but I'm talking collectors in general. There is more interest in the big name hall of famers (Mantle included) than the "second tier" and "third tier" hall of famers.

@@WadeBoggsFan 2. if you ask me I think players like Yaz, Homerun King, Mays and Clemente still have a strong following and even though players from the 70's demand a premium like Ryan , Munson, Bench , Seaver and Fisk I think the other side has more interest for the 73 set..

As a kid, we always hated the 73 all time hr leaders. Kind of an ugly card, and one we considered just another common. Boy how things change.

They certainly have. Even with all-star cards and league leaders cards. Growing up I was never a big fan of them. But now they are making a comeback as a cheaper alternative for collecting some great players.
