When i first saw the title of this video, there was only one shootout that came to mind and that was Heat. I had never seen a shootout with such amazing sound and feel to it. It will most definitely stand the test of time.

True Story- I was at a medical conference in downtown LA when Heat was filming. My friend from South Africa did not want to walk from the conference to the restaurant because he said LA was "too dangerous." We were giving our name to the host when all Hell broke loose a few blocks away. My friend hit the ground and said "Get down, get down- they're shooting!!!" to which the host replied, "Yes sir, they are shooting- a movie." He never lived that down.

Three things: 1. Heat by far was superb. I was in the Army and my unit was on our way (a 4 hour bus ride) to training for two weeks and we played this. The ensuing discussion left most of us with the idea -- THAT is how you shoot, move and communicate. 2. How in the world did John Wick, any of them, NOT make this list? 3. Aliens -- The fight where the Space Marines are trapped in the station and have it out with the Xenomorphs. Repleat with automated machine guns and attitude.

The fact that they actually changed magazines is proof of the realism, compared to submachine guns with seemingly 1000 round magazines, LOL. The North Hollywood shootout occurred a couple years after this film, and of course there was grumbling that the real robbers in 1997 had studied this film as sort of training. There might have actually been correlation because if it was known that the police actors trained with real cops, the tactics would have been similar as far as roadblocks, etc. Not to mention, the film showed how outgunned the movie cops were, and it would have been common knowledge that in real life L.A.P.D. circa 1997, not much had changed. Both robbers in real life never finished the day alive, so we will never really know how much or little, or if at all, they gleaned from 'Heat' but I lived in L.A. at that time, and I do recall them mentioning in the aftermath and investigation that a VHS copy of 'Heat' was found at one of the several locations the robbers owned or rented.

Watch the uncut version of the Wild Bunch, mind boggling Blood and carnage. You might change your mind.
@tidedownoutdoors5411
@tidedownoutdoors5411 3 жыл бұрын
@@johngialanellajr8650 I own the directors cut of the Wild Bunch and yes it is great. But in my opinion, still not as good as Heat. As gritty as Peckinpah was, he still used some Hollywood audio and sound design in his shootout. For Heat, Mann uses the actual audio from the weapons on the streets of LA. He tried to use various sound effects to make it more "Hollywood" but said nothing came close to the terror of the actual sounds on the street. Most firearms scenes in movies, even the good ones get so much basic stuff wrong. Sounds that guns make, reloading drills, basic weapons handling, etc. Most Hollywood movies are just that, pure Hollywood. Heat is the exception, because it is the actual audio from the shooting scenes. So what you wind up with is dudes firing real guns, with real muzzle flash, real audio and using real weapons tactics and drills. Not sure one can find that combination in a single other movie. Additionally, all the guys had to train for several weeks with Spec Ops operators (not a common practice then). If you watch the movie closely, no one ever flags anyone with a muzzle, trigger discipline is present. Even minor errors like guns being in-battery or out-of-battery when they should be are not present. I can think of several movies that were ruined for me because the hammer isn't cocked after a shot on a 1911 or the bolt is locked open on an AR just before a shootout. Heat gets the major and minor details right. Just watch the reaction videos of true military operators breaking down HEAT. All of them agree the attention to detail and accuracy are pretty well unparalleled in cinema. I mean c'mon, Pacino uses flash-sight shooting technique to brain Sizemore's character. Who else get's down into that kind of minutiae? Just good stuff! The only thing I dispute is Pacino's character having that customized FNC-80. That's a pretty rare weapon, doubtful anyone in the LAPD would have one of those. But Mann has always liked using a variety of obscure firearms in movies. Heat also features a Star MegaStar, , a Steyr TMP, and Israeli Galil ARM. Ok sorry, I\ll quit gun nerding on you now.

It boogles my fucking mind that so long after Heat came out, movies STILL do all of their firearms sound in post. Just listen to that. That's what shooting high-power rifles really sounds like, especially when a bunch of them are going off all around you.

RandomTXDude210 Heat's shootout sticks out to me after sooo long. It's an awesome, pounding experience. I remember when I had a 5.1 surround system and no neighbours years back - nearly deafened myself once just watching that scene...
@grindstone4910
@grindstone4910 9 жыл бұрын
RandomTXDude210 lol @ calling 5.56mm "high powered". But, yeah, I totally agree. It's funny how people who have never been around guns never realize just how damn loud the things are. Even "silencers" only bring the dBs down by a few dozen, still loud enough to clearly hear at distance.
@RandomTXDude210
@RandomTXDude210 9 жыл бұрын
Grindstone Well, compared to a 500 Nitro Express, the 5.56 isn't much, but it's definitely a high powered round. There's a reason it's the NATO standard, among others. But, yeah, the movies make silencers something magical. Really what they're great at is masking the location of the round being fired.
@grindstone4910
@grindstone4910 9 жыл бұрын
RandomTXDude210 No, compared to 7.62x51mm, an intermediate round, which the 5.56mm replaced as the main rifle round, it still isn't a high powered round. Nobody considers 5.56mm "high powered". It's "high velocity". The reason it's NATO standard is because of a mix of politics and capacity. You can carry more 5.56mm than you can 7.62mm.
@RandomTXDude210
@RandomTXDude210 9 жыл бұрын
Grindstone You're not entirely wrong. Just depends what qualifiers you're using to determine power. I'll find you plenty of people that think anything .308, or larger, being high-powered. Which a 5.56 isn't, true. So to prevent devolving into an argument about ballistics v. usability, I'll just agree with you. Though I will point out that the FN was a 7.62, and it's possible the Galil was as well. But that raises the issue that gets me about the movie - you'd think a group of robbers that well trained and "professional" would all be carrying the same rifle, or at least ones with shareable magazines in anticipation of a firefight. But it's Hollywood, and they got so much else right, they can have that one without me bitching about it online.

It's probably been said here before, but when I was in the Marines, they actually used the shootout from Heat as an example of how you should actually cover and move. One dude lays down covering fire and keeps people's heads down. Your buddy moves forward a bit, gets situated, then covers for you so you can move up. Hopefully not in downtown LA, but it's pretty good all things considered.

The sniper scene in Saving Private Ryan is great, but the one from Full Metal Jacket should have taken that spot. The burden of command thrust on Cowboy, the futility of the radio traffic, the epic "mad minute" at every subsequent shot from the sniper, the tension between the squad members and the outsiders, Joker stuck behind the pillar as round after round smashes into it, the Congressional Medal of Ugly! All this and Animal Mother too!

I agree with the 2nd choice with "The Wild Bunch". The shootout in that movie was not only a realistic look at the way advanced weapons affected combat, but it was also an allegory for the shit that was going on in Vietnam and the people who were most effected by the violence. Industrywise, along with the previously released "Bonnie and Clyde", the film changed the way violence is depicted in movies regardless of genre.

plumlogan - I agree as well, definitely should be on the list. I think the movie as a whole is extremely underrated. But I do have to nitpick slightly with your "finale is so realistic" statement. Most of the movie is refreshingly realistic (by Hollywood standards, at least), intentionally done so by the director (who had a retired Navy SEAL work as an adviser/choreographer for the action scenes). But the director intentionally abandoned that realism for some parts of the finale as a tribute of sorts to the old Westerns. So if you pay close attention, you'll notice some examples of unrealistically long gun bursts from the "bad guys" and from the 1911s of the protagonists (whose names are never mentioned in the movie, but as another "hat tip" to the Westerns are credited as Parker and Longabaugh - the supposed real names of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). (/nitpick). TL;DR - Agreed - Awesome movie, should be on the list, and has relatively accurate shootouts, except for intentional inaccuracies in finale.

Unforgiven and Open Range are both examinations of the psychology you have to have to be a gunfighter and a killer, and both have epic final scenes where we then get to see that in action. Maybe a video like this takes its sweet time to put together? Maybe the people doing it hadn't been so recently to the movies, especially since John Wick flew in under everyones radar in the beginning (as I understand it). Maybe they toiled with the work of compiling the list, rooting out favorites by vote, starting with a shitload of good shootouts, slowly narrowing it down to the ones we get here. Loading it up, going back to their social lives, a short while after maybe getting to the multiplex for a bit relaxation. Maybe by then John Wick wasn't even playing any more? I missed it on cinema due to the fact that I was on a loong trip abroad, had millions of every-day-things to catch up to when back at home (incl BACK to WORK) and missed it. Had to rent it on iTunes, then bought it when it was released. When I first saw it must've been at least 6 months after the premiere. Sorry about the rant, but I was really disappointed that I missed it in theaters, because I've heard about it from Schmoes and Chris Stuckman AND Jeremy Jahns and wanted to see it on the big screen with the big sound! To add insult to injury: in Sweden, where I live, the goverment rised the tax on entertainment from 6% to 25%! That's a VERY big slice of the ticket fare that doesn't go to the distributer. So smaller films might not get to our market. Not that I consider John Wick: Chapter 2 a small film. HOWEVER. Before this taxthing was anounced, JWC2 was marketed to premiere Feb 10, when looking for upcoming films. Afterwards: it dropped off. It will NOT be shown in Swedish theaters. Can you believe my cosmic bad luck!? I have to wait for ages AGAIN, to get it on iTunes or buying it on DVD. And this was one of my most anticipated films of 2017...

I know John Wick only came out a month before this was published, but it would most certainly be included. Another Chow Yun Fat film I always enjoyed was "The Replacement Killers" which had some great shooting scenes. It's hard to narrow down war movies to just Saving Private Ryan, which I think is a great film. Inglourious Basterds, Platoon, We Were Soldiers, Full Metal Jacket, Glory, etc...

The Marine Sniper's name was Carlos HaTHcock not hatchcock. he joined up in 1959. And made that shot somewhere around '66 - considering he was a very good marine and well regarded by his CO, considering his years of service at the time he made the through the scope shot - he was likely a top of Grade Corporal or a sergeant...an E5 or E4. he was likely NOT a Private in 1966. At the time he was WIA a few years after that shot - he was a Gunnery Sergeant E7. Just sayin' if you are gonna give the man kudos - make sure you get his name and rank right. He deserves that. 🍻

Actual a top 10 list that gets it MOSTLY right. Most importantly, you got 1 and 2 spot on. When you consider that the Wild Bunch was shot in 1969 and for all practical purposes not topped until heat, that is a hell of a tribute to a film. It set the bar for almost half a century. Think about that. Dare I say that without the Wild bunch there might never had been a John Woo. (Old School, Woo not US Watered Down Woo)

"In the Line of Duty" - a movie based on a very real life incident involving several FBI agents and two very violent criminals. The bad guys are played, against type, by David Soul and Michael Gross. The climax of the film is a depiction of a very savage confrontation that took place in a quiet Miami neighborhood. The power of the scene derives in many ways from its utter stark reality. When I watched the movie I thought most of it was rather pedestrian police procedural - but finished the movie thinking the shootout was the "best" shootout scene I had ever scene - if one can think about it in those terms when one realizes it all happened.
@JBliehall
@JBliehall 2 жыл бұрын
777, the bad guys never had automatic weapons (more Hollywood nonsense) but it was filmed at the actual location of the gunfight. Hollywood should learn (and people should be aware) that the human body can sustain a hell of a lot of damage before it shuts down. Remember Taken? Liam Neeson shoots 6 guys only once and they all fall like a sack of sand and lie still. 1 guy he shoots was running up the stairs and 1 shot in the back from his 9 mm Berretta dropped him cold. Never happen.

For westerns, not to mention Tombstone's redo of the gunfight at the OK Corral to me not only misses an iconic gunfight from history, but also misses one of the best acted gunfights. You can see the personalities of each of the characters come through in their faces as there is fear, rage, trickery, and obvious tactical thinking. Most gunfights have no emotional content, or ability to perceive what the characters are thinking, but this one does.
