I prefer Casablanca. All time classic. But you cannot argue with Citizen Kane in my opinion. Its not only a well scripted and well shot film, I found it to be engaging and moving. Watched this in Film School and 90% of the students in the large room lost interest and talked throughout. So some may find it boring but to dismiss it as important would be a dishonor to such a passionate film

The 1940s also gave us three of the best "woman's pictures" of all time: "That Hamilton Woman" with Vivien Leigh, "Now, Voyager" with Bette Davis and "Random Harvest" with Greer Garson (which I prefer to the more lauded "Mrs. Miniver"). Whatever the list says, these two will always make my Top 10 of this decade.

I feel like I was born in the wrong period. I have discovered that so many of my values are very old style (emphasis on chivalry, family piety , patriotism and nationalism of the old days) but I can’t say it to people because I would be seen as bad or weird. I love studying military history. I am not into modern rebel culture. I love old era music (classical, opera, and old folk). Obsessed with ancient medieval and Renaissance history.

Would have been nice to see some Powell and Pressburger on the list; The Red Shoes and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp are among my all time favourites. Also Double Indemnity should definitely be in top 10, for its outstanding performances and in my opinion the definitive noir script. Really good list though, especially considering they were dealing with maybe the greatest decade in Western cinema. The top 3 are all among the very few films that fully justify however much hype they receive. Can't wait for the '50s!

Impossible to pick the best. But the scene in Casablanca after Rick has seen Ilsa, his one true love, and the deep, painful agony he endured while sitting at the piano asking why of all the fun joints in all the world she had to walk into his. Anyone who has ever felt that pain knows exactly the agony and flood of emotions running through Rick and it can't help but dig up that forgotten misery. God that was powerful. And Treasure of Sierra Madre another Bogart gem. I couldn't look away for a second, but most of these films do that. What a decade!

I love The Great Dictator! I memorized the final speech in High school. I bet I can still write it out... I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.... The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. ..... Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite! YAY! Still got it!

Always suprises me that Its a wonderful life is considered a feel good movie, when it is one of the very few films that deals with suicide, despair and failure. Also, James Stewart's performance in it is, is absolutely amazing in its emotional realism, precision and charm. Its a wonderful life and Casablanca, Treasure of the Sierra Madre are the films I have watched most often from this list. They will never grow old.

@@rodneydowney2561 I have already seen the movie. Yes, I have nothing to do in this quarantine. I do not see any stereotype, at no time are the crows eating watermelon or chicken, or that they speak as the typical stereotype of the black person of that time (All This and Rabbit Stew, an example). The crows were dubbed by African-Americans (including the famous Hall Johnson Choir, with the exception of the leader who was dubbed by the great Cliff Edwards, and also contributed to the dialogues and the way of dancing. The crows were more like a parody / tribute to the famous jazz singers of that time.

I thought this was based on Watchability. Fantasia is painfully boring. Fell asleep in the theater on the re-release. Surely something with an actual plot was easier to watch. The Maltese Falcon was so damn good. It's a shame that kids have no interest in the past. The most powerful comic book characters is fun but 300,000 more views than this? smh
