It is truly sad that Hollywood today is now more about graphic live action CGI remakes, than about mixing live action with hand-drawn animation. Where's the creativity, where's the love?

On the corner, shaking an empty tin can, because it's too damn expensive.
5 жыл бұрын
Making hand drawn animation is not prohibitively expensive. It's no worse than making a Pixar film or a CGI blockbuster. But the studios don't believe that there is enough market potential to justify that kind of budget. Perhaps they are right that the audiences have moved on to other things, or maybe they just think so because nobody has dared to make something on the level of the best of the Classic Disney or Disney Renaissance films. (If Disney made another Lion King now - I mean a film with that level of appeal, not a sequel - would it draw Lion-size audiences? We may never know.) Compare its budget to the 2009 Pixar film, Up. That cost $175 million to make, a lot more than The Princess and the Frog. But it also had a worldwide box office gross of $735 million, easily justifying the cost. The one recent attempt in the US at making a major hand-drawn film, The Princess and the Frog in 2009, failed to make a profit. US gross $105 million, worldwide gross $267 million, production budget $105 million; those numbers add up to break-even at best once home video sales and TV showings are added. Disney had been considering doing additional hand-drawn films but killed the idea after the film's lackluster performance. (My opinion was that it was a good film but not on the level of masterpieces such as Pinocchio or Beauty and the Beast.) On the bright side, it wasn't as big a flop as Disney's biggest budget film of 2009, their version of A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey. It's yet another form of animation; it's one of Robert Zemickis's motion capture films. That cost $200 million to make and had a worldwide gross of $325 million. That one was surely a money loser even after secondary markets. That didn't stop Disney from trying motion capture again in the 2011 flop Mars Needs Moms, which grossed a measly $39 million against a $150 million production budget. Mars Needs Moms pretty much put the nail in the coffin of motion capture projects, though The Adventures of Tintin, which was already mostly completed at the time and had Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson involved, was released eight months later. That film grossed $374 million, mostly overseas, against a $135 million production budget, so it made a bit of profit.

Pete's Dragon will always hold a special place in my heart. My parents took my younger brother (whose name was Peter) and I to see it at Radio City Music Hall. Peter loved it so much; he was 5 (I was 13) and the thought of having his own dragon was too much to ignore. I sang "Candle On the Water" to him at bedtime for many nights. He died in 1994 at the age of 21. I personally think he would have liked the newer version, but the original would always be a favorite of his.

Nope, the Alice cartoons were the first to mesh live action and animation. But yeah, Three Caballeros should have made Honorable Mentions. There were too many problems with Cool World. They needed to hit the lamp and the camera was poorly used for the characters.

The Alice Comedies as it was called were shorts not feature films. It wasn't even the first shorts to combined the two. I think though technically Fantasia was the first film by Disney to have both live action and animation, but The Three Calaberos was probably Disney's first film to use live action and animation in the same scenes.

One that you missed is The Incredible Mr Limpet, a 1964 film starring Don Knotts as a human who turns into a fish. It's not particularly notable for technical accomplishment, as live action images and animation are rarely combined (mostly the film switches between them), but it should have gotten an honorable mention.
