Wolf Of Wall Street was one of two movies I’ve ever walked out of. I walked out because I was physically repulsed by the unadulterated decadence in that movie. I was so disgusted, I told my friend I couldn’t watch it anymore. It’s incredible that people saw the film and coveted Jordan Belfort’s life.

It's overlong, has a really pesemistic view on the crimeworld, Tony doesn't get the girl ( and she never liked him ), the ending is an extreme downer as he losses everything and there's no glory to it.

Anti-war movies are definitely guilty of this. You can’t say “war is bad”, yet still make the battle scenes look “cool”.
@vancel35
@vancel35 3 жыл бұрын
I think "cool" is a matter of perspective. I couldn't watch all of natural born killers because it made me nauseous how they reveled in what they were doing. Most battle scenes in war movies are horrific if you think about what they represent. Full Metal Jacket was tragic. If all someone sees is the "cool" when the filmmaker was trying to show the horror, it's because society has glorified violence to the point that all violence is seen as good.

The protagonist can be the villain, the morals of the character play a big part in the story. We always see ourselves as the hero of our own story, you might be the villain in someone else's story. The protagonist shows their point of view, the character is meant to provoke emotion. The emotion could be revulsion or sympathy, morals of both the reader and the protagonist can change how someone views the story. I found this subject interesting, really made me think about the importance morals in stories and their protagonists have on society.

I think two Shymalan movies are misunderstood: 1) Signs isn't about an alien invasion, it's about a man losing his faith and regaining it; 2) The Village isn't about a hidden old-timey society, it's about how fear causes blindness but love can lead the blind from fear. The contrivances around those themes can be stretched, for sure, but that's what they're really about. I have nothing for The Happening...other than that it's a secret comedy (what if that was the twist ending? The twist wasn't in the movie, it was in the real world -- it was a prank all along...)

“Full Metal Jacket”, another movie mistaken as an ode to American military superiority. It shows how all that hard core, “blood makes the grass grow” training did not create dominant warriors. In the end a single, teenage girl with likely no military training holds off the entire platoon. Reason to fight trumps skill. “A Few Good Men”. Jack Nicholson’s speech on honor gets quoted relentlessly by people who support the words. But they fail to realize a) Nicholson’s character betrays everything he says and b) that “code” was used to get the Marines to do dishonorable things against a member of their unit for one man’s glory in contravention of the Corps’s guidance.

@@videakias3000 That the concept of heroes that solve everyone's problems is inherently flawed, because the people themselves are the problem. Rather than solve the problem by making the world a better place to be in they: Allow others to make decisions about the fate of those around them based solely on face value >Rorschach, place the burden of all their problems on the best of their people creating psuedogods that must somehow meet the expectations society placed on them >Ozymandias, and beg gods who have no real control of the issue to just magically make the problems go away >Dr.Manhattan. Rorschach represents the blind justice of the world. That you can always do what you think is right and it doesn't matter what the consequences are because you did what was right in your eyes. The problem is very few people see themselves as the villain and even much less so in war. They were always in the right and the other side was always wrong. The movie pretty heavy handedly shows this as you see him disgusted with people who are just poor. How he doesn't give a fuck if the world goes back into nuclear war so long as they know Ozymandias tricked them, and the whole prison arc of the movie just shows how even when jailed for committing crime he STILL sees himself as the bringer of justice. Ozymandias can be swapped in for any person who we saw as the solution. He is hyped as being a genius with the body of an Adonis. He CAN'T fail, he MUST have the answer. His gifts become his curse and it drives him to the point of insanity. That he would kill his fellow comrades and commit terrorism to make the weight crushing down on him stop. It's also pretty heavy handed on this too lol. Dr.Manhattan is the easiest one. He has literally infinite power and cannot die and yet he spends half the movie having no idea what the fuck to do. He explains that he is just a puppet like everyone else except he can see all the strings being pulled. He sees everyone's view all at once and when you see all sides of the issue there is no true right answer. All he can do is WATCH from a distance far from everyone else and when he can affect the outcomes of things he can only do so when someone else has already done something about it. The moral of the story is coming together as a society is the only way you can actually build a better world. People will only stop threatening to kill each other with nukes when something WORSE comes along, because too many people are dependent on 3 terrible aspects of society that only lead to more problems.

"Parasite" criticizes both "sides". I think the interesting part of this film is that regardless of the country you live in, there will be some inequality, so everyone can imagine the story in a different setting.

“American History X” is another one where the moral gets lost because the film has been appropriated and glorified by Neo-Nazis. I mean, sure, the film goes out of its way to show that Neo-Nazis are BAD and why you shouldn’t join them, BUT at the same time, it also makes being a Neo-Nazi look kind of BADASS *(cue slow motion closeup of Edward Norton’s bald head and chiseled, muscular body full of Neo-Nazi tattoos).*

I feel like for certain movies making a statement like some listed here, the filmmakers either rely on or inadvertently appreciate consumer misinterpretation or ignorance with regards to the true nature of the films, either watching the trailers or the films themselves to recommend them to their friends... those that purchased a rambo ticket to watch it for it's gritty insight into ptsd and the sufferings of war veterans paid as much for their ticket as those who wanted to just watch a violent thriller action movie...

I saw the Wolf of Wall Street like Goodfellas or Casino. All these movies show the main characters indulging in their newfound riches and luxury as well as their acts of debauchery and crime. But as these films progress, all their plans unravel and go awry, causing them to burn bridges and lose everything. As entertaining as these movies are, I found the acts of the main characters to be repulsive and immoral, especially in the wolf of Wall Street. In fact, I didn’t feel bad for many of the characters in that movie. But these three movies made me glad to not associate with a life of crime and give into morally corrupt temptations. So the message here remains clear in all the films. Props to Scorsese because he directed all three of these movies and this is a recurring theme in many of his films.

For me with the godfather, it showcased how Michael slowly descending to the life that he didn't wish to be apart of and that his father didn't want him to be apart of the Corleone crime family. Michael knew his family were gangsters but chose not to be apart of that life though through the course of events, he is brought into it and becomes a ruthless gangster himself.

To quote Peter Griffin, I did not care for The Godfather. I always thought it was too long, boring, barley had any likable characters and felt it made Italian people look bad. Yet, people like my father (who's half Italian on my Nanny's side) cannot stop singing the movie's praises; sometimes calling it the single greatest movie ever made in history. But the only thing I genuinely liked about it was when Sonny utterly brutalizes his sister's boyfriend, after he assaulted HER

Jurassic park is a critique on the evils of capitalism
@setcheck67
@setcheck67 3 жыл бұрын
Kinda, but not really. Jurassic park(at least the first one) wasn't even operational to make money yet and the founder didn't create it for the goal of money. The original moral of Jurassic park was explained by Goldblum's character. That playing god, even for good intentions, is still playing god. Once life has been brought into the world you will eventually lose control of it, because the very purpose of life is to "find a way". The sequels were definitely about capitalism though.

Why isn't The Exorcist on this list ? The Exorcist is often called "The Devil's Movie" ( I can easily understand why do to the film's imagery). William Peter Blatty,the author of The Exorcist, stated that it was actually intended to be a story of faith through the character of Father Damien Karris who loosing is his faith, but after his first encounter with the possessed Regan. He starts to regain his faith and was able to successfully cast the demon out Regan sacrificing himself in the process.

I think there's a danger of putting too muhch of the blame on the audience, and not enough on the author/director. Especially in movies, you have many opportunities to frame the action and give the audience the perspective you want them to have on the characters. If they come away from your anti-war film thinking war is cool, that's on you.

Sometimes people don’t get the movie because it’s badly made ie they screw up the way the main point is supposed to be interpreted. Saying this film is A doesn’t make it A if all it does is promote B. 99% of ‘anti’ war films do this.
