I wonder if Ralph would have turned down the Cup Series like Dick...statistically he did very well on short tracks, although he never did get an opportunity at Daytona, Charlotte, or Talladega. Who knows, maybe if he'd seen Dale Sr's start in 1975 he'd be inclined to give it a try, at least for a few years (still impresses me how people would race into their mid to late 50s, absolute units) Also good God I'm hype for today. At some point where copyright permits, you should get some of the crew together and watch a live race (I'm not familiar with platforms that allow this, but last I checked you're okay so long as there's no feed and no sound)

I remember I think it was the 2009 500 where Mark Martin got so close but got edged out by Harvick at the line. So disappointed to see him not win.

@ 9:52, is it my eyes deceiving me, or is Dick Trickle smoking a cigarette mid-race during a yellow? Another great vid SlapShoes. Thanks for the upload. It's always a pleasure watching your vids.

I always get a big kick out of the look on young people's faces when I tell them smoking was allowed outdoors on our high school campus back in the 70's. They also allowed firearms in the parking lot as long you kept them in your vehicle and the school did not have it's own police force in those days. It was a different world back then for sure.

@@amc401nash6 : With the exception of the constant threat of the Cold War turning 'hot', it was a better world for sure. Motorsport, (which for me was F1, Rallying and Touring Cars), was certainly a lot better back then.

First video i have seen from this contributer. Good content, and no cutesie comments are down talking the drivers. Great to learn how good Trickle was, that the big dance wasn't that big a deal to him. Others it was a timing issue where the money wasn't good or they got into it later in life. Saw a story that said Janet Guthrie was a great driver, but couldn't get the quality ride to showcase it.
