Күн бұрынDevelopers continue to find new ways to innovate open-world game experiences, with a history of genre-defining (and all-time great games) offering new, expansive, and unforgettable worlds to explore. With that in mind, IGN's staff duked it out (in a professional manner, of course) to put together a list of the best open-world games, looking at how they deliver as a complete package in letting us best get lost in a world, take over enemy outposts, and find a ridiculous way to outrun enemies. So without further ado, here are IGN's picks for the top 10 open worlds games.

Breath of the Wild is just such a timeless game. It’s honestly hard to go back and play other open worlds with how much freedom you have and how incredible the physics are in it. Beyond hyped for tears of the kingdom!

My favorite open world game is definitely RDR2, it has so many different missions and encounters that you can have outside of the main story. Spider-Man Miles Morales is a close 2nd 😊

Stalker: Call of Pripyat gets overlooked (maybe because its only pc and has many bugs) but it has one of the best atmospheres a game can provide, combined with AI that was years ahead of its time, natively plays in russian, ect. It's the only game I've seen release over 12 years ago and still has a 10/10 on steam.

Breath of the wild is an amazing game not just because of the action and gameplay but because of the scenery and beauty of the open world we don't see much of it in alot of other open world games that's what makes this game truly beautiful

@@dmc6833 emptiness is not necessarily a bad thing, and in the case of BotW it’s often ‘empty’ in places for a reason. The game is full of content and things to interact with though, so it’s not inherently empty.

@@dmc6833 the "emptiness" is what makes all encounters and discoveries much more meaningful than in any other open world game. If games are filled to the brim with "secrets" and npc's, I get overwhelmed and it makes me care less about what's going on. BotW is an absolute masterclass in open world design.

Love BotW getting this much recognition despite the repeated "criticism" of the map being empty (because there aren't many npcs). It goes to show that an open world doesn't have to be npc centric to be fun and gameplay can be so much more than your usual fetch sidequests.

Except you basically have to make your own fun. There's nothing wrong with that, but did the map have to be that big? Genuinely the most overrated in the genre. If you compare to Elden Ring, there is *something* behind every door and hidden in nearly every nook & cranny

The Witcher 3 is an absolute masterpiece and is my top choice for best open-world game. yes the combat mechanics are questionable, but the storyline and overall gameplay are what catapults it atop every other game on this list. that's just my opnion tho we all have our top 1s. cheers.

Too bad they didn't have more treasure hunts in RDR2. Finding a clue or map to a treasure was the best part about the game. Most of the rest of the game was just following a red line to the next encounter and shooting a bunch of people. Such a great map and open world that is under used in my opinion for exploration and discovery.

Each game of these game has something unique: -RDR2 and GTAV = little details and the living word -FAllout NV and Skyrim = side quests and each npc feel unique -Zelda BOTW = freedom and physics -Elden ring = landscape, combat, bosses and how rewarding it is -witcher 3 = storytelling -MGS5 = shooting and how many things gives to the player to complete a mission -Spiderman = traversal

Breath of the wild really defines what an open world game should be. Vast, non-linear and so much freedom to go around and explore. Climb any mountain and cliffs, swim any lakes or oceans, and the physics behind it are also pretty smart and well thought-out. Skyrim is my second choice and elden ring is 3rd for me

Glad to see the Horizon series represented here. They have the unfortunate habit of releasing in the shadow of ground breaking, genre defining games (both on here lol), but they have some of the best open worlds ever made

The bad habit here is when people define the success/quality/popularity of a game base on Twitter (or other social media) discuss! ... Horizon Zero Dawn went on to sell 20mil+ copies despite seemigly being "overshadowed" by Zelda:BotW ... WhaT A FaILuRE!

Rdr2 might definitely be my favorite but one thing which MGS 5 does best is the approach to te mission. You can complete it any way possible. Unlike mst open world games, where missions get quite linear.

Not really when that games world is not only small overall, but the best way to move around in it is to glide above it to ignore most of it, making most of the city just forgettable, what is not helped by the fact that all you find there are mostly just criminals and riddler puzzles...

It's so memorable that by the end u would have memorised each area not only because its small but because how dense it is with collectibles. Secret events. And memorable landmarks. U haven't played much of the game if u think this world is only full of collectibles and criminals. U can save prisoners. Pick up phone calls to catch a murderer. Solve murder investigation. Its truly fantastic stuff

Too bad they didn't have more treasure hunts in RDR2. Finding a clue or map to a treasure was the best part about the game. Most of the rest of the game was just following a red line to the next encounter and shooting a bunch of people. Such a great map and open world that is under used in my opinion for exploration and discovery to find useful items.

@@isaiahconway9762 I'm not sure if you were part of the PS2 era but Shadow of the colossus is one of those classic old games that help shape the open world genre of games which we have today so it should at least be part of honorable mention as IGN's video suggest "Top open-world games"
