Ever wonder what to pack (and what not to pack) for a trip to Japan? Many of these tips are useful for any travels, but some of them you might need to keep in mind when packing for a trip to Japan. I also show you how I pack lightly and fit everything I need into one carry-on. Hopefully this will help you guys plan and prepare your trip! Make sure to TRAVEL LIGHT!!!
#packingtips #japantraveltips #traveltojapan
Packing List - keep in mind your list might vary depending on your needs and wants so just use this as a guide:
- 1 week worth of outfits for any trip length between 1-4 weeks (For the summer, I usually bring: 1 nicer but comfortable dress; 3 tanktops; 1 T-shirt; 1 button-up shirt; 1 blouse; shorts or jeans; skirt - for you girls out there, make sure your skirt doesn't fly up easily or you'll feel so annoyed having to hold it down; underwear and PJ shorts. For winter, I bring the same type of clothes but with long sleeves, one thick coat, and a couple of thermal underwear which you can also easily buy at Uniqlo in Japan. You will also want to bring scarf/hats depending on your needs.)
- Comfortable easy to slip on/off shoes
- Extremely minimal toiletries (better to buy in Japan!)
- Power adapter (preferably one with multiple plugs and USB)
- Portable Battery for your phone
- One small bag to hold all your valuables including PASSPORT (and visa or any other travel documents you might need), wallet, phone, extra camera batteries, earphones, tissue, wet towels and body wipes
- Laptop/tablet and charger
- Camera, extra battery and charger
Besides money and travel documents, you really don't have to worry about forgetting anything. You can easily shop for everything in Japan, all the basic things are widely available and easy to find. Just make sure to TRAVEL LIGHT since you'll do a lot of walking, and probably need to go on public transportation with your luggage.

I went to Japan in January and one thing I wished I had brought/purchased was waterproof boots. You won't need them in Tokyo but anywhere that gets snow, good boots are a lifesaver.

Be advised for first time visitors to Japan..If you take the Airport Limousine {bus} from Narita Airport to the Tokyo districts it will be about an 1 1/2 hour ride depending on what time of day you arrive..Luckily the bus ride is scenic and relaxing after a long flight..

Just came back from a week in Tokyo (loved it!!). One thing that I found difficult about buying beauty products in Japan is the language barrier. I don't speak Japanese and not everything is written in English in stores. I think you need to do a lot of research and save pictures on your phone before going, so that you know what you want to buy or need to look for.

There are tons of "what to bring to Japan" videos, but this is much better than most. The only thing I would note is that if you are coming from North America, you don't need a power adapter - Japan is 100V/50Hz, so 99% of all US type will work.
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 7 жыл бұрын
Yes that's right! Actually most electronics can work worldwide without a converter these days - just need an adapter to fit the plugs. US 2-pronged plugs can directly plug into Japanese outlets, but if you have 3-prong plugs (like many PC laptops) you still need an adapter since Japan has only 2-prong plugs

OMG, thanks for the foldable bag tip! I plan on using the takkyubin service to send my luggage from my hotel to the airport when I return. However, sending luggage to the airport using the service requires that I send it 2 days before the flight, so I was trying to figure out a light and easy way to keep a change of clothes with me while my luggage is in transit. I am so happy to have stumbled across your video. I am planning a solo trip to Japan this October/November for 20 days. I will be traveling from Tokyo all the way to Hiroshima. I do believe I can attempt at packing light, but I am addicted to shopping and there are always regional exclusive items to get. So of course I get in a panic and want to bring my huge Delsey roller luggage just for a piece of mind. I'll also be staying in hostels so using that bag has excellent security locks. But now I am torn between taking the large roller luggage vs taking smaller roller backpack and carrying many smaller bags with my shopping hauls with me. AHHH THE DILEMMA! But nonetheless, thank you for the awesome videos.
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 7 жыл бұрын
Haha I totally understand! In terms of using a big luggage or smaller bags, it depends on what type of things you will want to buy. If you want to buy large but lighter items (like snacks or shoes maybe), I would say big suitcase is better. But if you are buying more compact but heavier things (like clothes which you can put in compressing bags or beauty items), use smaller bags

Thank you for responding! I feel so honored ^-^ My problem is that I want to buy -almost- everything. However, it would mostly be beauty items. A friend is going to help me pick a bag to take with after showing her your video.

I never overpack whenever we fly to Japan. If you forget something, you can practically get everything at Daiso and very cheap too! Uniqlo clothes are way cheaper than in Europe or the US as well. As we stay 2-3 months there, we only bring a lot of European cheese 😊 because "sticky cheese" are very expensive in Japan. As we are germans 😉, we don't like eating normal white bread, we bring along 2 big loaves of "german" bread with us and freeze it, so we could have it anytime 👍 (so difficult to find authentic Roggen/Dinkel bread in Japan).

Dress in layers, and I can't recommend thermal underwear enough! They keep you warm but not sweating and stuffy. Also, it depends on how shopping you want to do as well, a friend of mine bought 2 large suitcases full of things when she visited lol

Hi there, Tokiyuyu! I know you talked a bit about fashion and clothes int this video, I was wondering if Tokyo has any clothing stores directed towards woman more on the plus-size? :)
@buttarain27
@buttarain27 6 жыл бұрын
Please bring enough clothing items for yourself, preferably ones that you can mix and match to save on space. Japan does NOT cater to the average western person much less one that is plus-sized (I can relate). You will be hard-pressed to find any clothing stores that sell clothing over a size L. It is best to do research before you go and see if certain stores carry larger items in-store (some shops may sell SOME larger sized clothing but it will be online only ). If you are a tiny petite Asian woman or any woman that fits that physical description, then yeah, go ahead and just bring a few items and shop til you drop when you get there. Everyone else, bring some clothes.

I will be in Japan this coming December. Any idea if those heat tech undergarments from Uniqlo are effective in keeping us warm in winter?
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 7 жыл бұрын
Yes they do work! I recommend you getting the extra warm one (there are 3 versions: regular, warm and extra warm). Of course it's not like you can wear that and a thin shirt in the coldest month, but it definitely helps a lot. It's very comfortable too, and keep you dry when you go in really hot rooms with heater.

Thank you for your packing tips to Japan, they are great tips. I don't know about not packing any toiletries. Those are essential. What if you are allergic to the new product? Is Muji has the same price range in Japan as in U.S.? Many thanks.
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 7 жыл бұрын
I feel like Japanese products are pretty mild, many are unscented and gentle. I've never had any reaction and I don't think it's too big of a problem for people in general. However if you have really sensitive skin, MUJI sensitive line is great, MUJI in the US is definitely more expensive in Japan. I listed the prices of the items I introduced in the MUJI video, maybe it will help you compare, but I think the US prices are about 1.5-2 times of the Japanese prices
@aliceleung8488
@aliceleung8488 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the FYI. I watch that MUJI video again, and I miss the information for the first time. And now I see it. The U.S store is so small compare to the flag ship store in Japan. You made a wonderful video, and A+ for the content information. Thanks Teacher. :)

This was very helpful! I am traveling with my family to Tokyo for the first time in November. I have a question. I have a GHD flat iron for my hair. Will it work in Japan? The voltage is different and also the plug is different. I'm worried even with the plug converter my flat iron may not work?
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 7 жыл бұрын
Check the voltage on your flat iron. Most of electronics nowadays have dual voltage, something like 100-220v, so they can be used world wide without having to use a voltage converter, just need an adapter to fit the plug. US 2-pronged plugs will actually work in Japan without an adapter too, only 3-pronged plugs need an adapter. So check the voltage and the plug. I would still recommend bringing an adapter though, just in case!

Hi, thank you for all your advice. What would you recommend for organic skin care products? I tried looking up products you recommended, but the ingredients aren't listed online. I saw some Muji make-up has parabens listed.
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 6 жыл бұрын
I think organic and vegan products in Japan are not as separated clearly as in North America or Western country. So some may be organic but doesn't get labeled. If you are looking to buy in Japan, I highly recommend checking out the cosmetic section of Tokyu Hands, they have many handmade Japanese brands that are organic. MUJI also has an "organic" line in a dark green bottle, have you checked that?

Hello, I was just wanting to ask--- 1) do the airport security let you bring back food items in a carry on? If not, then would it be better to check in a luggage for all the souvenirs and carry all your personal items in a carry on? 2) where can I get one of those charger adapter and what do you call them? I know different country uses different watts, so is there one specific for Japan? Thank you for your help!

Yes you can totally bring back food items in carry on (as long as it's not soup or drinks or other liquids), they even sell all the popular food items in the airport before and after security. You just have to check requirements at customs though, usually no fresh veggie/fruit/meats are allowed. For adapter, I got mine on Amazon. If you are in the US, you can buy on Amazon or Best Buy or any electronics store. Try to get one that has multiple adapters all in one, this way you can use for your trips to other countries in the future as well!

I'm going to Japan in October. How's the weather like during that time of the year?
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 7 жыл бұрын
Seems like many people are coming to Japan in Oct! It's one of my favorite months along with Nov. Oct's temperature is about 15 celsius around night time and about low 20s celsius during the day. Not much rain but it might happen once or twice during the month. I would pack thin/light long-sleeve blouse/shirts, with one cardigan or thin jacket for the night time. Enjoy your trip!

Hi Yuyu, can you suggest a good booties models or brand that suits for autumn? I was planned to wear a lace booties, but find out it'll be difficult for me since I have to tied it in & off every time I go to somewhere. TIA.

I love NINE WEST for pumps and booties, but I also bought some from a Korean shopping website called www.sthsweet.com/ (I shop SO MUCH on there...) and their availability is random, so not sure what they have in stock now but you can take a look. I recommend you wear a pair that has a zipper, cuz you know the type that you just put on and pull off without any sort of zipper or shoelace? I find those hard to take off sometimes actually, so my favorites for traveling are always the ones that have a zipper. Also, autumn isn't too cold in Japan yet, you can get away with just wear regular shoes too.

I see. I'll try to check those site & hope can get a pair (or more) from them. Yup, I think lace isn't a great choice since I've to take it on & off regularly. Will find out 1 with zipper then or will try to wear some a pair of pumps like yours, since it looks easily to pair & can tone up or down my outfit. Thank you so much for the advice. Oh, btw, I just planned to left my daily care & only bring amount of sample, this video really helpfull ^_^

Does japan have many skin products that are gentle on skin or many sensitive skin products?
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 7 жыл бұрын
MUJI has many many great sensitive skin products, but in general, the products are pretty mild because I think that's something Japanese people look for when buying skincare too. But if you feel unsure, just go for the sensitive line at MUJI

For things like makeup and shampoo, this works only if you are white/fairskinned and have straight hair as Japan wont have what other POC need.

I will be in Japan for a week and I'll take only backpack with me. But I'm afraid they're not gonna allow me bringing the backpack into museums or temples. Do I have to put in it in the locker at the near station?
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 6 жыл бұрын
Temples will be fine because you'll walk outside mostly. Depends on what kind of museums you're going to. Usually they provide lockers if they don't allow you to bring things into the museum. but if you have a huge backpacking-size backpack, you probably won't want to walk around with it much anyway. If you just have a regular size backpack, it will be fine.

Im going to japan the first 2 weeks of november, any tips on what clothes to bring? Will it be very cold?
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 7 жыл бұрын
Won't be too cold yet, temperature is around 10-15 degree celcius. Not sure where you are from so it might be cold/hot to you, but for me, I would just pack long-sleeve t-shirts and blouses, and a thin jacket or a thicker hoodie. You are coming at a great time! Not too hot/cold, not too crowded and not much rain!

Hi, how are the clothing sizes over there? I'm asian myself but having trouble finding the right size in some countries even though I have a normal european size. Are they smaller or shorter compared to Europe?
@TokiYuYu
@TokiYuYu 7 жыл бұрын
I'm used to American sizes, which I find are usually 1 size bigger than Japanese size. For example, a S in the US would be like a M in Japan. I usually buy XS in the US, but most of the time the smallest size in Japan is S. There are many one-size-fit-all clothing in Japan, and I would say that it usually fits girls who wear XS to M in the US. In terms of length, I think most of those one-size clothes target girls who are about 155-165cm tall. It's a bit hard to generalize all clothing sizes since each brand is different, but I would say if you are usually a M or lower, you will find clothes super easily. If you want sizes bigger than that, you may need to look at well-known brands like Uniqlo, GU, Bershka, H&M, etc. Those stores usually have sizes up to L or XL.

Pretty sure they can provide you one if you ask, but I always bring my own since the hotel would only let you use during your stay and it's not guaranteed that they would have one available
