Big role or small, good guy or bad, he always strived for the best. Often considered one of the finest actors of his generation, Hoffman impacted the way we think about acting. He could slip so fully into his roles, viewers could forget they were watching a portrayal and not the real person. These are the career highlights of a master of his craft. In honor of his tragic passing on February 2nd, 2014, www.WatchMojo.com counts down our picks for the top 10 Philip Seymour Hoffman performances.
Special thanks to our users "Jaime Enrique Gutierrez Perez", "offbeat08", "Princess Caticia", "cdelatorre97", "Javier Dejesus", "William Key", "Andrew A. Dennison", "Awesome One", "Elliot Thomas", "perryhigh", "Nana Amuah", "Philip Folta", "Marc Nadeau", "Tyler Fuentes" and "Onofre Ramirez" for submitting the idea on our Suggestions Page at WatchMojo.com/suggest

One of the remarkable things about him was that he always stood out, no matter who was in the film, how great they were, or how big a role he had. #8. Almost Famous- Oscar nominated roles were Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand, and Hoffman still stood out. #7. The Talented Mr. Ripley- Jude Law and Matt Damon were the most critically praised, and he still stands out. #6. Magnolia- This film had so many wonderful actors who all gave great performances (Tom Cruise, Jason Robards, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly). Cruise clearly stole the show in the film, Cruise was the only nominated actor for the film, and Hoffman still stands out. #5. Charlie Wilson's War- Was the only actor nominated despite being in a film including Tom Hanks, Amy Adams, and Julia Roberts. #4. Doubt- Clearly holds his own in the film with acting greats Meryl Streep and Amy Adams (all of which were Oscar nominated). #3. Boogie Nights- Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore (both of which were nominated), Mark Whalberg, John C. Reilly, Don Cheadle, and William H. Macy were all in it, and he STILL stands out. Honorable Mention: Scent of a Woman- Pretty small role in a film which won Al Pacino an Oscar and a Golden Globe nomination for Chris O'Donnell, and he STILL stands out. Honorable Mention: The Big Lebowski- Stands out in a film that includes Jeff Bridges, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, John Goodman, John Turturro, and Sam Elliott. Wonderful actor!

Every film he was in, he was the star. Those that burn the brightest also burn out fastest. I'm so tired of seeing people I admire and who give me a few hours of joy turn up dead the next day, usually from drugs, accidental or not. River Phoenix broke my young heart. Tom Petty broke my adult heart. Losing Hoffman is like dropping your priceless diamond ring down the gutter. It's irreplaceable and for the most stupid reason. Thank you all for the joy you brought us. I wish you hadn't also broken our hearts.

I'm sorry but the reason I even know who PSH was is because of his role in Along Came Polly. I knew he was a serious actor, I knew he had a lot of talent, but unlike many of the powerhouses we see on the Oscar stage, he took a small comedic role in a rom-com and became the single best thing about the movie. It's great to highlight his dramatic talents, but what made him great was his range.

ha ya that was a pretty aweome scene. I like Joaquin's ability to go through a healing process throughout the movie... becoming timid, to angry, back to timid... it was so versitile. Was in tears by the time "the Master" splashed in. Seeing this, I know the truth that he did have so much to give. He may have given a lot of rare, intense and emotionally vulnerable and captivating performances only actors can dream and inspire to be, he still had something golden to give us. He may have been 46 but he still was young, he still had the youthful embodiment in himself to portray with grace and relaxation.

@@regiwhiting1833 they were like neck and neck, Toby looked more like Capote though. But this list is missing Happiness and Schenectady, NY, so that’s definitely a bigger joke.

Shades of Marlon Brando and for sure wholly underrated and unappreciated in his time. And now, with much remorse and sadness, both superb talents from Patch Adams are gone.

Glad you got my 2 personal favorites - Happiness and Magnolia. I'd probably like him in Capote, too, though I haven't seen the movie. I'm glad he won an Academy Award before he died, because he certainly deserved it with his talent. The man could maneuver all kinds of roles and wasn't just another Hollywood pretty face but a real character actor.

My favorite movie is Flawless (1999). I was totally engrossed from start to finish! Why is this movie of his rarely mentioned? I never saw a movie quite like this one. It shows how people who are very different from one another can get along if they work at it and respect one another's differences..

Recently I saw an Australian animated film called 'Mary & Max'. I was completely surprised to learn the title role of Max was voiced by Hoffman. Its an assured testament to the mans versatility in his art that,in the context we were not able to see him,the voice he provided was one I would never for a million years have guessed was from Phillip Seymour Hoffman. We've lost an amazing talent in the world of film.

The bit they chose in Boogie Nights where he's walking Diggler to the shoot, the thing he did with the pen as sign of his desire, using the pen as a phallic symbol is so subtle and such a sign of true acting

Just a shame that this man has left us. Such an amazing actor and man, I wish he still was still with us. But, just as he said in the film "The Savages", "Because People Die! Death is gaseous and gruesome and it's full of shit and piss and rotten stink." It's terrible, he will be missed.
