Yeah, the main reason why Aladdin (1992) didn’t need a remake AT all even with its problems (that in all seriousness would be minor nitpicks) would be because of the way the remake was CGd like any other.

I think they overcorrected for the 92 film. They were criticized heavily for making him the most stereotypical “Arab” in the movie, and the bad guy. So they cast a dude with a ridiculously sweet face, to avoid that mistake again. But I think they went a bit too far. He was so sweet and gentle it was a little hard to take him seriously as a villain.

I really liked how the story was driven by Jasmine wanting to be more involved with her country. She left the palace not to see the sights, but to find out what was really going on and try to make it better. While all the human characters were more real and nuanced, the non-human characters such as Abu, magic carpet, and Iago had less personality than the original, but I suppose that is only to be expected in the transition from cartoon to realistic CGI.

This story is far from the real story of Aladdin, there is no monkey or parrot or flying carpet in the original one. The film is not specific of when did the Queen die and Jafar did mention bodies he had to bury to get where he did. If the Queen's murder has been more recent, then Jafar could have done it. If she was killed when Jasmine was a child, it's far less likely due to Jafar's age.

@@eliraeclipse2435 True. We don't know if the wizard (or whatever) who created the flying carpet included Warp 9 speed with the expected power of flight. It's like Dungeons & Dragons, I guess. A Level 5 Wizard can cast Fireball spells. A Level 20 Wizard can cast Fireball spells. But the master Wizard can do a whole lot more with his Fireballs than the just-over-apprentice Wizard can. And the magic items that they create vary in power and quality accordingly. Who's to say that the magic carpet wasn't created by that shoddy low-level mage and not the high-level archmage? But conversely, Iago was obviously a _magical_ parrot, complete with self-awareness and the ability to compose sentences on his own, not speaking from mere repetition. What if _Jafar imbued Iago_ with the Warp 9 package while he was conjuring his familiar and giving him the powers of sentience and speech?

However, it was always my favourite Disney film and as a kid, I didn't really notice many of the things that were an issue because I always thought of it as a fantasy film with no tie ins to reality. I liked this updated "live action" version and all the attention to detail. I applaud them for making more conscious choices in regards to many cultural representation aspects. However it makes the film feel completely different compared to The Lion King where pretty much everything was the same as in the animated version. They did a great job but in my mind, they'll be two completely different movies somehow 😅

The nod could have been the water current, muscle reflex's and even the after effects of being violently shook by genie. I think Genie abused his power and had no right to intervene. Either save him as a favour or do nothing

What bugs me is that the cave of wonders wasn't fixed at all. By saying "take"instead of touch doesn't fix anything. They obviously are very scared to touch any of it at first, but when the carpet appears, Abu ends up scurrying around a large pile of gold. Then, when the ruby appears, all it takes is Abu touching it to cause the cave to crash down. I feel like the 2019 version convoluted this plot point further than the original.

I have seen most of the live action remakes and this one has got to be one of my favorites. Aladdin and Jasmine were well cast and fit perfectly into their roles. Will Smith did a good enough job as the genie---not trying too hard to be Robin Williams, but adding his own style to the character. The visuals were great and the songs were pretty much on par with the original. The song "Speechless" was a fantastic addition and just blew me away. Unlike **cough** The Lion King**cough** the movie was not just a book by book film, it was a nice retelling with new additions. The dancing choreography, the handmade Dalia, the genie-Dalia dynamic, speechless, more depth to Jasmines character and the different beginning are a few things that come to mind. The main weak links would be the miscast for jafar, the change to Iago( tho this could be a good thing depending whether or not you were a fan of the original loud mouth), and the climax of the movie. Other than that, this is a movie well worth your time.

From the top of my head the problems fixed in Aladdin. 1. Friend Like Me was the instructions. 2. The man telling the story to his children on the ship is no other than the Genie himself. 3. The Genie becomes human.(see point 2). 4. Jasmine becomes a sultana(female version of A sultan) . 5. Aladdin's parents are mentioned, since Jasmine was playing a guitar and Aladdin mentioned that his mother played him that song as a kid. 6. The wording of the wishes. As Will Smith mentions to Mena Masound to be specfic with the wishes and not say can you make me a Prince. 7. A Whole New World they fly in Agrabah unlike the 1992 version. 8. Jasmine loves exploring maps and reading books. 9. Double wedding between Aladdin and Jasmine along with Genie and Dahlia. 10. Iago acts more like a parrot unlike the cartoon one, who's voice drove me mad. 11. The sultan in the remake is more headstrong and not a bubbly man.

It really showed how much power Jafar had over everyone. He showed off his immense power by using those elaborate techniques. windambee303 The actor is very good, it’s the character itself: sure, the screenwriters gave Jafar a bit of a back story but making him younger (just to introduce this “love triangle” sort of subplot) removed all his charisma and that “creepy” factor that made him a good villain. When you see the animated classic’s Jafar, you instantly realize he is dangerous and cunning and that those aspects come from age and experience and you immediately understand why he’s in his current position. The movie’s younger Jafar is dangerous too, but his younger age somehow dulls those qualities and he comes out less intimidating and dangerous....he sort of loses his edge. I don’t know if it makes sense, but that’s my impression. :)

The second wish is the only time in the original that the Genie rules weren't followed. The first wish was just some clever wording by Aladdin. My thoughts on the list, as I enjoyed both the remake and the old one. #10: I completely agree. It was nice to see the writers work in a major fan theory like that, and Will Smith brought the character to life, both on the ship and on the boat. He also managed to pay major homage to Robin's original portrayal, while making the character his own. That is the mark of a great performance. #9: You know, I didn't even notice this little change when I first watched, but when I look back, it works. Touching nothing but the lamp in the cave would've been darn near impossible, so good on the writers for tweaking that little misstep in logic. #8: Eh...I'm on the fence on this one. I found the costumes in the animated and live action movie terrific, so I'll withhold an opinion. #7: Once again, I have to give credit to the writers for tweaking a misstep in logic. In an animated film, traveling the world in one night seems plausible. Why? Because it's animated and fantastical and over the top. In live action movies, I find that we tend to think more in terms of relevance to what is within a human being's limits, and this is no exception. We do live in a world with constraints, and breaking those constraints via a magic carpet ride seems very off kilter. Then again...having the magic carpet in the first place seems off kilter. Of course, if we're gonna go down this path, then why have the tweak at all? I mean, it's a MAGIC carpet! By definition, it should be able to do the impossible! It could have a turbo jet engine that could zoom them around the world in one night! I think we have to suspend our disbelief for that one song. But Alan Menken's update to it was rather spellbinding (I mean, it's a Menken score...when is it NOT spellbinding?) #6: I completely disagree. I found that the political correctness in parts of this movie (as it is in, well, everything in our society) was completely forced. It didn't play well with the original movie. Also, we must consider the time frame that the movie was set in. I'm all for removing racism and racial stereotypes, but you have to stop and consider some things. The original lyrics of Arabian Nights and Prince Ali fit the time frame. It's not like they were trying to be racist, they were trying to fit the mood of the historical period that it would have been set in. But, because it's 2019 and movies in 2019 have to act like it's 2019, or Hollywood's version of 2019, no matter what period of history it's set in, then they did this. Look at the 2012 movie Lincoln, which was a brilliant film about the greatest president of all time and his struggle to get the Thirteenth Amendment passed. The film had some words used about black people that, today, we would consider horribly offensive and racist, and we would be correct in doing so. But because the film was set in 1865, then those words were used and nobody really found it offensive. It fit the time frame, as I'm sure the writers of Aladdin were attempting to do. I didn't find it racist at all, but rather a refreshingly politically incorrect take on history. #5: Yes! This was one of my favorite parts of the movie. I found that Jasmine's mother was a character whose backstory could've been explored in the original, but it wasn't. It would have benefitted Jasmine's character as well. Now we have some more groundwork for both characters and, even though she never appeared, it was like her mother was in the movie all along. Well played, writers. Well played. #4: Again, I completely agree. It was odd to never actually hear about the location of Ababwa in the original film. But it was cool to see the Genie save Aladdin's tail by swooshing it up on that map when Jasmine wasn't looking. Again, well played, writers. #3: I don't know. This is one I'm on the fence on. I did enjoy the final battle in the live action one more than the animated one. Why? I'll tell you: IAGO BECOMES THE PARROT FROM HELL! Even though Gilbert Gottfried wasn't in this movie (a BIG mistake as it took Iago's character to an all-time low), I found the bird's role in the final battle to be immensely entertaining, and a leg up on the animated film. #2: I really enjoyed Jasmine's expanded role in this film, as it allowed us to see more into her personality. This was the part of the movie where I was concerned that they were gonna go into a "hail femininity! Men suck!" mentality, but they never did. They did a really great job with making Jasmine determined, brave, and fiercely independent, while still having her retain a lot of the traditional princess stuff. She did go around wearing pretty stuff, she had an animal sidekick, and she sang (in my opinion, an Academy Award deserving) new song for the film. She also never saw any of the male characters as being beneath her. That's the problem with a lot of filmmaking today. They get on board the feminism hype train and make women these butt kicking characters and they make men big old softies. It was nice to see a movie where no character went to any gender extremes. It was just a boy looking for a purpose in his life, and finding it in his love for the girl, and the girl seeking to do what was best for her country, and falling in love in the process. It was rather beautiful, to say the least. #1: I think the whole "rubbing the lamp" thing was probably the least enjoyable element of the story. It took away a lot of the humorous banter that Aladdin and the Genie shared before the Genie made him a prince. I mean, who doesn't love it when Genie's face falls and you hear that "pa-DONK" sound effect? Also, the explanation for all of it was kind of convoluted and strange, if you ask me. But that's a minor criticism on a very enjoyable remake. Movie of the year so far for me!!

It's a song about the facade that the protagonist is living behind, as opposed to being about the man himself. As Aladdin, he is a nice guy. But as Prince Ali, he's portraying the swaggering, arrogant, cocky type of prince that Jasmine loathes and doesn't want to marry. That's the group of smoke and mirrors that the Genie helps Aladdin produce, which is another reason why the original lyrics fit.

Okay, I'm gonna be 'that person' because I love the original movie: 10. Who the peddler is doesnt matter - a little mystery is kind of nice, and this is likely an homage to the way these stories were frequently told 9. Tall order to not touch anything in the Cave of Wonders... yeah. It's a cave filled with gold - if it were easy to escape alive than it would be less interesting 8. Clothes - it's a cartoon, and cartoons frequently have one outfit to identity the characters. 7. The magic carpet - someone else pointed out it IS a 'magic's carpet, soo. Also, that scene is AMAZING in the original and the lyrics mean something and go with the characters actions, it's just regurgitated in the live action 6. Lyrics - okay, the climate in Arabia I imagine to many americans/westerners ( where the film was being marketed) would be barbaric. Also, in the middle east at the time of Aladdin, harsh punishments could occur. And, ahem, deciding to put our modern moral standards on a movie about history is the definition of white washing and revising history. Yeah slaves suck, but it still happened 5. I'll give you this one 4. Ababwa... sure 3. Jafar as 'most powerful being's Dumb change because the original fits in with the theme and it's a natural progression for Jafar to want to be a genie 2. Jasmine as sultan - Another 'applying our standards to history' because I highly doubt that even TODAY in the middle east women could become a sultan (I may be wrong) but especially back then, women could not be rulers, and I feel Jasmine would simply not feel this was something she could or should have, because she wouldn't be raised to believe that 1. Lastly 3 wishes, fast and loose with this rule is kind of fun. I liked that in the original aladdin was able to sort of trick more wishes Alright. Done.

InfernoMutant For number 6-The lyrics about slavery and scorching heat? I’ll agree with you on that. However, when one lyric goes “Where they cut off your ears if they don’t like your face” or some thing like that, is when some Arabs find weird. Even at the time of Aladdin (assuming the times of Aladdin were inspired by true timing) Arabs had some strict codes. People wouldn’t just attack each other for no reason. Tribalism and Hospitality via generosity were essential in Arabia. Arabs would rather brag about how many mouths they fed rather how many heads chopped off.

It's really the top 10 changes that fix things that aren't problems, isn't it? The real problem with this video is that #2 is just wrong. Jasmine doesn't have a larger role. In fact, she doesn't even do much of anything. All she does in the new movie is to ask everyone to please pay attention to her and for the guard to please listen to her instead of Jafar. In the original, she shows how smart she is when she figures out she needs to distract Jafar when Aladdin sneaks in.

One thing that they should have fixed: Jasmine has been "preparing to be Sultan her whole life," and has a handmaiden who tells her about the world outside the palace, but she doesn't understand the idea that food costs money? There are plenty of other ways she could have gotten into trouble in order for Aladdin to rescue her.

So, as far as the carpet goes, I feel like more than the Entire Globe, the World to Jasmine was Agraba. That was the place she loved, the place she tried to sneak out and see. She was sheltered for all her life and for so many years, her "world" was just the palace. Now she gets to see the world she wants to rule over and protect. However that is more of an emotional thought on my part. Logically speaking I think one of the reasons it might have been cut down in terms of travel, was budget as well as that 2 of the 3 scenes in the animated version were Easter Eggs for other movies from Disney. Although on that note, did anybody see that tree in the MV that looked like the one from The Lion King?
