That was with standard military power and manifold pressure. You could tweak the wastegate and run it at 70 inches of manifold pressure to beat 500. Adding water/methanol would give you even more. Same for the big Pratt & Whitney’s.

With a 10-1 kill ratio, the Corsair did a “little” bit of work in WWII. Best known in Korea? REALLY?
@jeffwalther3935
@jeffwalther3935 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Corsair performance in both theaters was peerless, but Korea being a decade after WW2 allowed the news and public coverage of Corsairs in Korea more often and better due to just the technological breakthroughs, public deployment of news resources and improvements and less distraction from other combat news, as in a world war. Korea allowed the carrier-deployed Corsairs to hit targets all over, deep in enemy territory where we had no land bases for hundreds of miles away, in the knick of time to save the day many a time in the retreat from Chosin Reservoir, their finest hour.

The Douglas DC3 and Beechcraft Model 18 "Twin Beech" should probably make the list but since I'd have a hard time bumping anything on your list I guess I'd have to make it the "Top Dozen" .Most if not all Sea Furies that compete at Reno have had their sleeve valve Bristol Centurius 'plants replaced by Wright R-3350s. That's the dominant radial there. Even the Grumman F8F "Rare Bear" had it's P&W 2800 replaced with the R-3350. Sea Furies were used by Cuba as late as the early '60s during the "Bay of Pigs" fiasco. I believe they were one and one in either shooting down or being shot down by A26 CIA operated "Invaders" that could've just missed making a top dozen radials list themselves. .

After reviewing the comments below, you really missed a lot of note worthy radial engine airplanes. To start with the immortal DC-3, one of the best aircraft's ever built. There are too many airplanes to mention as they are all covered in the comments below. The majority of airplanes mentioned were made in the U.S. and only a couple built elsewhere, so WHY did you use metric measurements to describe the airspeed for the U.S. built airplanes as those airplanes did NOT have an airspeed indicator using the metric numbers on the face, it was ALL in MPH!!!!!!!! Other that making me stop the video to convert form KM to MPH it was rather good. My grade is a B- for the video.

How in the world did the Douglas DC-3 not make it here? Or even the DC-6? Or what about the Lockheed Constellation? Boeing 377? Boeing 314? The DC-3 is arguably one of the best piston aircraft to ever fly, the DC-6 being one of the first long range pressurized aircraft, the Constellation being the first pressurized commercial aircraft to see widespread use. The 377 has the most powerful radial engine on it, the 314 is a flying boat that Franklin D. Roosevelt flew on in 1943 for a meeting with Churchill during WW2. And the Corsair? My god. Best known for Korea? Saw some action in the Pacific theatre? It’s one of the best known aircraft of WW2, and Korea was mostly dominated by jets and helicopters. The Corsair was considered the most formidable fighter the USAAF had by Japanese pilots with a 11:1 kill ratio.

Wasp Major engine. And while impressive they actually weren't very good engine's, like the Wright R3350 they were never anywhere nearly as reliable as the Pratt&Whitney R2800. The Wasp Major just had too many banks and as a result the rear cylinders suffered cooling problems they never did really overcome, and the heat issues affected the carbs so on the B36 that's why they turned them around, but then they had issues with the carbs freezing at the extreme altitudes it flew at, they had a horrible safety record. It's a good thing that jet power came along and solved those issues, because 4 rows is just too ambitious, they never really were reliable.

You set yourself up for criticism by choosing your top ten. My top ten would have not included the T28 or the Cessna 195, but would have included the Beech 18 and the DC3. By deleting a couple of others I could have added the DHC2 and the AN2. But then again, others would disagree with me, which goes back to my point about setting yourself up. Whatever the case, the most distracting things were the numbers. Those need to be right. The photography on the other hand was pretty good. and overall I enjoyed your video.

I would have put the Staggerwing first, then the Spartan, then the C195. I think the A26 Invader should have been there. I think you screwed up on many of the speeds--for example, the Sea Fury tops out at about 460 MILES per hour. Certainly not kilometers per hour. It wouldn't be dominating the warbird unlimited category if it could only manage 287.5 miles per hour flat out. But thanks for posting.

No come on. The Staggerwings weird transition from top wing to cockpit definitely gives it some minus points in the aesthetics department. Like a beautiful lady with a monobrow.

I find this idea of top 10 ranking totally baseless and the “beauty” criteria for choice very subjective. There are so many planes of this type and your choices are totally arguable, no Boeing bombers, no C47, no P47. I then, want to highlight the ridiculous comment for the #7 F4U Corsair at about 3:05 you say “mostly known for its role in the Korean War, it also participated in the Pacific war”. WHAAAT, WWII is an “also run” compared to the Korean War? The Japanese called the Corsair “whistling death” , so many American aces flew it in WWII and you say it became famous in Korea , where jets were the main protagonists btw, the famous “MiG alley”, do you remember? Next a typo , the #3 T 28 is not Trojin (at 6:02) it’s Trojan. Yeah I really watched your video! Lastly an opinion, a nicest looking radial engine planes top 10 list that doesn’t include the FW 190 is totally destitute of any credibility, or maybe you couldn’t find the video about it?

The Sea Fury with its correct engine as designed by Sidney Camm is the only one which qualifies the type as a Hawker Sea Fury. The Re engined aircraft are highly modified and have major differences ohv engines for a start, purely for the sake of air racing. That is because the type can fly at Subsonic speeds in a dive and is an extremely clean aerodynamic shape. It’s lineage ,Tempest 11 (centaurus)and before that Typhoon (Sabre) had little time to be fully developed but the Fury could be considered to be that final ,refined development and is worth preservation for that reason alone. The essential difference is that this aircraft is important because it also represents the colossal effort by engine designer sir ROY FEDDEN and the years Spent refining the sleeve valve which the majority of his engines featured . The most numerous and successful was the Hercules predecessor to the Centaurus. Which like the Fury itself too late to the party , Everything was going into Jets by the time they were coming into service. Camm and his team By then busy with the Seahawk , and Hunter.

Yes, to what other viewers have caught. Here's one more: the T28 Trojan, not Trojin. Keep it up. You're entitled to your opinion but be sure your facts are solid.

I saw that typo as well. I agree this list seems opinionated based. In my opinion I would prefer the Bearcat over the Corsair or even the Tigercat. I think a top ten is too short of a list as there are many pre war and ww2 aircraft....that I think look stunning. However that being said I like the aircraft in your list. One thing that kind of drove me crazy was you flip flopping from knots to kilometers to mph....even on the same aircraft. You did gallons per hour on all, why the speed value changes? I would prefer stick with one through the video....being from the US I would prefer knots but that is just me. Many older aircraft only have mph on their gauges not knots (except maybe the russian entry)...and radials are old technology. I don't know it just sounded confusing on the video. Just constructive criticism.

You said Sea Fury has a max speed of 460 kph. Rubbish!! More like 460 mph- they were the fastest piston driven plane ever made, and held their own against the new jets of the time, remember? They sure as hell didn't do that with a speed of 460 kph. If you've ever had one do a fly past at full noise, you'll know without doubt they do well over 400mph. Even at a distance of 300 metres away, they are long gone before the noise even hits you.

Having seen and been inside of a sea fury in person, absolutely. This Seafury is by far the loudest, fastest and largest single prop plane I have ever had the privilege of being near. Watching that thing at full throttle do a flyby at around 500 ft is one of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed.
