he’s from California... so a Oregon home state report is bull. It would be more creditable if he talked about why he moved from California to Oregon. Pretty obnoxious when someone moves in and criticizes what they don’t even understand. Pretty standard California behavior. “We don’t like our state so we will move to yours and then get on government boards to make it like the state we left.” Actual Oregonians worry about the mental health of Californians.

it should be noted of the Oregon housing authority just released a report that declared that, In Portland, you're incapable of paying rent for yourself when you work full-time at minimum wage. So, if you move to Portland and you don't have a high wage job, expect to have several roommates in a place with not as many rooms. but don't worry looking out your window will be motivation to go to work by seeing the homeless encampment on the sidewalk outside of your apartment.

Hiya Heather! Your chagrin and point of view are crystalline, and based on facts. Before the Great Recession, Oregon had solidly decided humans are scum on Earth so more government on our necks was good- this made housing costs bloat compared to incomes and job availability. In Central Oregon, my city, Dem and Repub, worked together for YEARS to come up with a city expansion plan to help make our lives affordable- and we were SUCCESSFUL. Our plan was sent to State. They delayed years, eventually telling us to expand UPWARDS and stack and pack in. Why? Because the sagebrush, desert sand, lava rocks, junipers, sage grouse (covering over 12 Western States) were threatened. Insanity is the norm now.

I see, according to what local health care told me over five years ago, the opioid problem is worst INSIDE THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY- so they deflect and obstruct any discovery by blaming end persons- the persons whom they steal the meds from, particularly ambien and opiods. Heaven help you if you tell them what they tell you about this- "We cannot hold your meds at this clinic, our staff will TAKE them" (emphasis mine).

When people talk about Oregon, they are always talking about the liberal, Western part. But there's another area of Oregon, the conservative, Eastern part. I've been told there is mostly arid, desert terrain in the East by people who have traveled through that part. But I never talked to anyone who actually lived in Eastern Oregon to get the lowdown on what that area is like. I would be interested in knowing what a person who has lived in Eastern Oregon thinks about it.

Vicky Abramowitz I lived about 45 minutes outside Pendleton about 7-years ago for a few years. The climate is very dry, windy and dusty. It's not uncommon to see many tumbleweeds there. You don't notice the dust at first, but after my first two weeks I started getting noticeable buildup. Wearing sunglasses and cleaning pads for eyelids helped. The land tends to be very flat from central Oregon; this makes it difficult if you like privacy or target practicing. Most of the land is for farming and grazing. If you stick around long enough, you'll notice the stench of fertilizer for the fields during the summer. You cannot escape the smell and stay indoors the entire time. During the summer you can get sunburned without noticing before it's too late due to how dry it is. It snows during the winter and black ice is very common. Let me know if you want any other specific information.

I came to Oregon accidentally in 1970. Lot's of folks were on 5,000 mile random hitchhiking tours. I arrived in Portland ,on foot, with 16 cents to my name, a complete stranger. Through an incredible run of luck, by the next day I had an apartment and a job. I have lived in The Gorge, Roseburg, Eugene, and all over PDX. I have canoed 50 Oregon rivers. I live on the Oregon Coast now. If this isn't heaven, I don't want to go. (OK it did rain 120" winter before last and blew an 80 knot gale for 5 weeks).

Hiya Lobster. I appreciate your experience based reporting and analysis. I can sense truthfulness in your expression. It does give me pause- a credit to you. Consider Central Oregon if you like eternally sunny weather, some snow, and they still let canoes on the river(s) if you get a permit and an appointment. IMO it is much better, nicer, to be in 14 degree, sunny, no wind, weather than 42 degree cloudy, windy, watery, cold. Nothing depressed me like Seattle and not seeing the sun for roughly six months in one stretch. Best wishes.

About the rain. Geography scholar/youtuber here. Oregon has some rainy places. Those places are on the west coast. However, if you go east of the Cascades, towards places like Baker, Pendleton, and Burns, it gets much drier and sunnier. Oregon has desert, in particular, the Alvord Desert. Parts of Oregon have a geography similar to Nevada. Many people don't know that.

I am from Washington and born in Oregon and this is very accurate. I will say that I am disabled in a wheelchair and the pressure to go hiking is in everything and I'm constantly left out. Especially when I was dating, everyone bragging about how many incredible places they trekked really hurt me. Most trails are impossible with my chair no matter what tires are on it and people seem content to just not invite me to their weekend fun. What they don't know is I'm pagan and basically desire to be out and about but my body does not allow me every day. Ableism is rampant though they're really polite and sometimes embarrassed about leaving me out, which is not a good thing either 😒 just campaign to pave a few trails and I'll be "hiking" with the best of em!
@dperry913MusicTracks
@dperry913MusicTracks 5 жыл бұрын
Crystal, this may not be what you want to hear but realize that the mind can go where the body can't go. Maybe, in spite of being chair bound, you can develop other ways of going beyond your confines, but in a mental way instead of a bodily way. They may not be ways that are based on having an active body in a physical space, but they may be potentially just as fulfilling, maybe even more so. I sincerely hope you are not as physically incapacitated as Stephen Hawking, but he might serve as an example to you of what people can achieve even with limited physical capacity.

Crystal, I hiked once with a disabled friend in his chair near Seattle. My heart just sank at the thought that he couldn't hike to the places I've been so I started throwing together ideas for a practical chair - something with electronically activated "legs" which could firmly hold on to a trail and move at the speed of walking or, a small wheels on a set of robotic arms which could lock up to "grab" a trail but freely roll when on a smoother surface. Do you have some thoughts about how this would be built?

I have been in Oregon for three years. Rent has always left a dent in my pocket. Rent is A SERIOUS ISSUE. It rains most of the year and it’s not that rain that makes you run indoor. It’s dreary light one that goes on for HOURS nonstop. The coast is not one like Florida’s. This is the ice-cold Pacific Ocean. Swimming is the last thing you wanna do if you wish not for hypothermia. Now enough with the whining. Wanna know the best thing about Oregon ?! The attitude of most Oregonians.

Hiya Saad! I have good news if you can move East of the Cascades. It is sunny most of the time, never humid, rarely rainy, undepletable water in the ground. The BEST THING about Oregon is Bend. There is a rotating, giant, weather shadow created by the five Cascade mountains all close together, the hub of which is in NE Bend, extending maybe 10 miles in a circle. The best thing about Oregon is the secret Central Oregon dynamics, there are five types of geography, four types of ecology, within 20 miles. Beware living in town, there is a financial bubble in pensions (like PERS you have surely heard of) that is passed via subtle fee and tax moves onto the City residents- water bill pays firemen, dog catcher, police, city, more, pensions that are cratering the City finances. They continuously bleat there is a need to save water (read: charge you more per gallon) when there is an undepletable, replenished, pure, supply from those same Cascade glaciers year after year.

I don't see how you can say the coast is not like Floridas. They're completely different in that Floridas waters are closer towards the equator. Meaning the water and the state of Florida will be hotter. I've lived in Oregon all my life and don't really care for the rain. It's just something you get used to unless it's nonstop then that gets annoying.

The tree thing is very accurate. My house has two massive trees that are under city protection and every year the roots tear up the sidewalk and we have to pay to repave it every couple years.

I live in Eugene, 'n I gotta say that I think the 2008 recession hurt us more than most states. I had just moved back from Colorado with my now ex-girlfriend 'n it was amazing how bad the economy was. We immediately wished we had stayed in Breckinridge even though we're both native Oregonians. Oregon is still my favorite state, though.

Housing market here is doing well and lots of people are relocating here for jobs. Seems like a pretty good economy to me.

Breckenridge got really expensive. People want over a grand for just a bedroom. I just moved out of there to Leadville.

I had to move back to California and that was worse. I love Oregon but it's so bloody liberal. Can't stand it, I was Democrat until I moved to Oregon. But coming back to Eugene.. I noticed that More places were hiring once Trump got into office. And no,I'm not a hardcore Trump supporter. It's just my experience.

p k the economy has stabilized now, but back in 2008, which is when I was talking about, it sucked.

RockyMTN steeze, when I lived there back in 2008 my girlfriend was the county clerk, so our apartment was free. I do remember friends complaining about the rent... it's kinda weird that it's so expensive when half the places are empty if it isn't ski season.

Wow, can’t wait to move to Oregon, and your video helps, but no way to Portland. Most interesting opinion piece. Loved the riff on Milenials.!

Briggs you know l am from the UK. You also know this is my favorite state. I laughed through most of this list. We have the "can't chop a tree down thing too". Funny story, somewhere in southern England a group of houses had a big tree that obscured their Sea view somewhat. During the January 2018 gales that we had, the tree was blown down. Their property prices went up by 1million! Now that what you call an act of God! 😀. Oregon is still my favorite so far. Just waiting for the vid on where to stay.😀

I’m thinking of moving to Oregon someday because I’ve been in Florida all my life and I want to live in a state where nature is pretty and the people are nice because you can barely find that here. The springs are nice but the heat I’m over it. So I just wanna say that your videos is really giving me a good concept of what to expect when I do move. Thanks 🙂

Ian, this is PRECISELY what made Oregon great- sufficient space around homes to allow this flexibility. Now, forgotten, we seem to have a mania of converting ourselves to pack in, stack up, or die back mentalities- At a City Planning meeting recently, we were put in a school, divided into classrooms, given maps OF CALIFORNIA URBAN AREAS to scrawl upon. The insanity is not slight. Appreciate your astute observation, Ian.
