She's breathtaking in that iconic scene, but for dancing prowess, the other number she performs, "Amado Mio" is amazing. The control she demonstrates reflects a lifetime dedicated to dance. In a heavy, beaded gown and high heels, her spins are fast and her leaps are flawless.

Idk why, but I was always somewhat put off by her ankles? Like even as a young teen, I’d sit and watch classic movies all night, and I just never really found the same fascination for her that others did. When I think of classic film “Perfect” legs, Vera Allen is always the first thing that pops into my mind, probably bc of the number “mandy” from “White Christmas”

All of these ladies of Classic Hollywood are wonderful. But only 2 were the ones who set men's hearts racing : Rita Hayworth & Cyd Charisse. That explains why both are in MY All-Time Top 10 most beautiful ladies of the screen from 1927 to 1960. As a film lover all of my life, that both were also fantastic, versatile dancers, is just so obvious through the body of their film careers. ----- ------MJL, 76 y/o

Eleanor Powell is the most awesome dancer ever filmed. Not only bc of her range of skills and styles, from buck to ballet. Not only bc of her athleticism and technical perfection. Not only bc of the blend of power, control, mischievous humor and warmth that she conveyed. Not only bc of her unstrident but constant feminism, keeping men in their place without humiliating them- from Louis B Mayer to chorus boys. She had more say over her routines- music, sets, costumes and cutting as well as choreography- than anyone else. She never did a dud number, and always made profits for MGM. But finally what elevates Powell above other star dancers is what one historian of the musical called her 'radiance of joy'. She felt she was obliged to use her gifts to the limit to diffuse her gladness at being alive. She was the most life-enhancing performer of any kind in movies: an inexhaustible fount of inspiration and good cheer. I appreciate and enjoy all the ladies in this collection, but the others were under orders. They needed help. After 50+ viewings of Ellie's thirty or so numbers, it is clearer than ever that she dwelt on a higher plane. During a fairly short time in Hollywood she achieved what no-one has emulated, and maybe never will.

This video is certainly Classical Hollywood Musicals at its best comprising great dancers like Gwen Verdon, Eleanor Powell, Leslie Caron. Shirley MacLaine was undeniably a gifted comedienne and dramatic actress and her dancing bordered on comedic lines in Sweet Charity. Top honors for this upload goes to Vera Ellen for the sheer diversity and neatness in her movements, never once falling into the trap of risque. She was lithe and languid and light as a feather and for her dancing was like flying through the breeze. Plain incomparable. Cyd Charisse was a renowned ballet dancer and perfected the various nuances and technicalities that went into the repertoire of ballet dancing. Cyd's various dances on celluloid involved gesture of the eyes and hands, expressions of her face, voluptuous poses of the body. She also chose to work within the vocabulary of the classical format. Ann Miller, wins hands down for the best legs in Hollywood. She was tall and possessed dancer's thighs and calves that were the envy of many a star. Her number from Kiss me Kate - "It's too darn hot" raised the testosterone levels of male audiences throughout the world; Ann also burnt up the screen - and a lot more - in "Two tickets to Broadway. Boy, was she a terrific number with very neat footwork to match.

Cyd Cherisse has always been one of my favorites. Maybe because my great-grandmother's name was Cherisse. LOL Vera-Ellen in "One the Town" (one of my favorite movies) is wonderful, both with her dancing and acting. With being a Doris Day look-a-like, I always thought she'd been in a lot more films. Ann Miller just got better with age, absolutely love her. Rita Hayworth I also love since I have a weakness for redheads. Some people tend to forget she's actually Latina.

I agree with all your choices in this video-- they are spectacular, each in their own way. I would like to add two solo dance numbers of a non-Broadway nature, both giving me a tingle that males get watching a beautiful woman moving beautifully. The first is the technicolor version of BIRD OF PARADISE, which features an alluring Deborah Paget as a native girl performing a mating ritual dance that, though it starts out as a female ensemble, quickly focuses on Paget and stays there. The second dance scene has Sophia Loren as a Spanish peasant woman dancing a Flemenco with other women but again the camera ends up singling the vivacious heroine out until she is alone in her moves in the latter half of the dance -- at which time I went through puberty when I first saw it on the big screen.

As is the case with all Mojo compilations, this one is probably best enjoyed with the narration off.

I must be the only one who found the Shadow Dance and The Band of Hands numbers, rather unsettling, maybe even creepy.

I did not like Shadow Dance at all. Actually in today's world it seemed racist.

Sorry not to see Mitzi Gaynor here. She was quite an amazing dancer!

Leslie Hunter.....you are right on. Until I saw your comment, I did not even think of Mitzi Gaynor. She sang and danced in many Hollywood films. Thanks for mentioning her. And she is still with us.

Doris Day numbers should've been included as well as some Judy Garland & Juliette Prows and Vera Ellen had some much better numbers that should've been higher up the list.

Adrianne Spring.... Judy Garland was not specifically renowned for her dancing. Garland was noted for being an all-around all-star. The only film I can recall from Juliette Prowse is possibly Can-Can????? Juliette Prowse was mainly stage, club and television. Doris Day was not specifically renowned for her dancing. She was an all-around all-star like Garland. Vera Ellen was mainly a film dancer.
