Adobe Character Animator is a new tool included in the latest version of After Effects (CC 2015). It allows you to control animated characters with a webcam using your own facial expressions, voice, keyboard triggers, and more performance capture options. Here are 10 tips to help you get started, including how to set up your puppets, create expressive eyes, use fixed points, add behaviors, and import finished characters into an After Effects composition with motion tracking.

What an absolutely terrific summary. I keep coming back and rewatching this as I teach myself to make puppets. Love the app! One thought... for quick action and social media use, it would be wonderful to be able to export videos directly as .mov files without having to go through AE - do you think that might be added in the future?

This is a great video thanks so much! Is there a way to clean up the mouth performance after it's been recorded?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 9 жыл бұрын
Aaron Fairbanks Currently no, but I've requested the same feature. Some tweaking inside CA would be nice, but ultimately I want full keyframe control in AE. The workaround for now is either a) recording "takes" - try it a few times and splice together the best sections, or b) you can arm/disarm stuff so you ONLY record the mouth and not eyes/body/head/etc - so you can just focus on getting the mouth right.

Great video, I'm just having a problem with editing live via photoshop and 'Ch' and having those edits sync from Photoshop into 'Ch'...it's as though Ch doesn't recognise my Photoshop at all? I can import my puppet (made from scratch) and everything works fine, but I want to make a few changes and can't seem to get both programs working together. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, it's been a long few hours searching for answers. This tutorial is great! The program is great! Great, great, great!!!

+Shannon Lorraine (OhMyWord) Hmmm. When you make an edit in Ps and return to Ch, do you see a prompt saying something about incorporating edits? If you see that it should be working. If you add a bunch of custom handles in Ch and then make some conflicting changes in Ps it can have issues too, like rearranging stuff out of groups or renaming layers, that kind of thing. Hope that helps!

+Okay Samurai +Okay Samurai thanks for your reply. I've caught a few snags along the way, but last night everything was working together smoothly. I'm not sure what the problem was, my guess is I had conflicting changes, as you mentioned, because that's all I could think of for why it wasn't working. It's all good now, thankfully. Thank you!

After Effects, Animate, and Character Animator are just different tools in the animation toolbox. Currently AE has the closest integration with CH with dynamic link between the two, but there's no reason that couldn't be possible for Animate one day.

Hi. Does this allow you do 3/4 view and side view? What about movement of the feet eg walk cycles/
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yes for views - check out the sample "Wendigo" character that comes as an example puppet in CA, he has 3/4 and side views of his head; technically you could do this for the whole body too if you wanted to. For walk cycles I'd recommend using After Effects instead - I'd do motion track points like tip #9 and add legs later.

Loving the ease of use here but I have an issue where I can't animate both hands. I record the whole animation for the face then turn off everything except the mouse pointer and the dangle options, then I try to record and animate the other hand but when playing back only the last hand I animated works. I can see the takes but nothing I do gets them both going at the same time. I'd love to know what I'm doing wrong! Cheers

+d1g1dav3 Common issue - new tutorial on this coming in about a week. You have to go into the puppet and add a second "Mousetrack" (soon to be "Dragger") behavior on the right Properties panel. Then arm and record one limb at a time. The tutorial will explain this in much more depth - stay tuned! Eventually we want this to just work automatically, it's in the priorities queue...

Hello Dave, my name is Drew Sagona, video producer at Education Specialty Publishing. I just had a quick question regarding an issue that I'm having in character animator. I have imported my puppet into character animator and it looks great. The edges are smooth and everything looks the way it did in photoshop. However when I add my puppet to a new scene it appears to have pixelated hilly edges which it does not have when I see the puppet in preview. Also when I move forward my puppets edges start to sink in. Just wondered what I can do to fix this and what might be the problem. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Drew
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 8 жыл бұрын
+Drew Sagona Round edges can sometimes cause this kind of issue - try looking at the puppet's properties under Puppet Mesh, and up the expansion number to something bigger than the default 3, like 4 or 5. This just makes more detail / triangles and will help with those jagged corners. For the move forward issue, maybe try setting head scale to 0% or adding fixed points / sticks to nail things down more.

@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 8 жыл бұрын
Search for "After Effects motion tracking" and you should find some in-depth tutorials. Basically you have a square/spot on your character that you can track and attach more stuff to - a very helpful AE tool I use a lot!
@ChristianVegaSimpson
@ChristianVegaSimpson 8 жыл бұрын
I mean how do you add the tracking point in character animator? In your video during #9 it shows you somehow placed a green dot in character animator that translated over to after effects. This is what I was trying to figure out. I dont understand how to create the point in character animator and how it translates over to after effects since all you are doing is creating an image sequence upon export.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 8 жыл бұрын
Oh, that was just a small green square/dot I had as part of the character's body. So just like I'd add an arm or scarf of whatever, I added a green dot. So that green dot will show up in every frame and let me track it in AE. It looks bad on initial export, but good if you cover it with something tracked in AE later.

Do you know why with my nutcracker jaw, even on your bluebird model, instead of the bottom lip moving the entire mouth is scaling and morphing. I.e. open mouth is large scale. Closed mouth is small scale. It moves perfectly in time with my mouth but it doesnt do anything with the x or y position of the bottom lip the way it did in your example. I've posted on adobe forums too but havent had any response. If I hear from them I'll let you know what it was too.

robert anderson actually I just completely scractched the whole Ch project and opened a new one. It worked on import there so I'm not sure what the issue was. Something in the preferences set in the project file somewhere that were affecting all the characters. So if anyone has the same issue persisting try starting again in a new project.

If it's not connected it could be a few things - your Head is independent (has a + when it shouldn't), it doesn't have the proper structure (+Puppet with two groups inside, Head and Body), or there's a gap separating the head from the body.

Stapling helps if they're independent, yes. Otherwise you probably have mesh issues, which we've covered in several of the live shows & tips & tricks videos (try the Stickman one from the first tips video to see how to get rid of gaps and do contour mesh).

Webcam isn't needed - if you turn it off your head won't move, but most stuff has alternative ways to control it, just click the red dots on the right. So for example, if I want to control the pupils with the arrow keys on my keyboard, arm Eye Gaze > Keyboard Input and disarm Camera Input.
