This is why evil always loses in the end. If they are not defeated by good, they ultimately defeat themselves. Because evil is self destructive and they are all about themselves in the end. Only reason they work with other evil people is because of the advantages. They have allies but not real friends and only fight for themselves. Good people always fight for others.

I think Jafar was my favorite from this list. I loved how he just kept wishing for more power and how Aladdin as the trickster convinces him to reach for more power without considering there might be consequences.

Fraser Green yeah, his comic book legacy (though I have little knowledge of it as I didn't read the marvel OR DC comics I have only read a few of the Transformers IDW comics) I do know that he had a long legacy as a villain in the comics. The IDW transformers comics are really good, I have read the comic series 'Last stand of the wreckers' was very good (if a bit brutal) and More than meets the eye is one of the bestest things to come out of IDW

I always feel sorry for Gollum because although he's a villain, it's not really his fault either. His mind is just poisoned by the power of the ring just like everyone else (even though he has it the worse) and his backstory at the beginning of Return of the King makes it all the more sad. Plus, when I first saw these movies I, much like everyone else hoped he would eventually snap out of it and see the light and become a good guy.

You forgot about the Princess and the Frog. Disney movie where the villain uses voodoo by the power of his relic. But once it was destroyed, the boss comes and takes the villain to his doom.

I agree about Dr. Facilier and his pact with "the other side". When the relic was destroyed it was all over. Few people would know the one I have in mind. In the Doctor Who serial "Planet of the Spiders", the Great One seeks a particular crystal that will complete the crown that she is building in order to increase her mental powers "to infinity". She forces the Doctor to get the crystal for her and when she completes the crown, the power becomes too much for her and destroys her and all her minions.

That's what the terrorists think. They never asked for their god's permission or approval. So saying that they were doing any deity's work is rather inaccurate. Also, the Nazis (Hitler especially), not unlike Stalinists and Leninists, are not famous for their religiosity as they were not exactly great fans of any god (Hitler wanted to be the god of his new order of things and any other god would be in the way).

I know this is an anime villain from a TV show, but Urasue from "Inuyasha." She stole Kikyō's ashes and recreated her body from clay so she can use Kikyō to track down the rest of the Sacred Shikon Jewel shards, then kidnapped Kagome, transferring her soul into Kikyō's clay body. Urasue successfully revived Kikyō, but it backfired. Kikyō, who realized that she was brought back from the dead she didn’t want to leave, purifies Urasue with her powers, incinerating the demon ogress to a crisp.

This is called being "hoist with your own petard." A petard was a bunch of gunpowder packed into a place dug into a castle wall and sealed. It had a short fuse so that when you lit it, you had to run for the hills before it exploded and you were hoist with your own petard.

i know, right? This is why i love Sam Raimi's Spiderman Trilogy. Because the Bad Guys weren't stereotypical black and white evil but were actually good characters who turned evil due to unfortunate circumstances and you can't help but sympathize with them. Exceptionally well played.

+8th wonder of the world All of Palpatine's apprentices were a means to an end and not the goal itself. In the films he wanted Anakin as his replacement for Duku (who replaced Maul). In the comics and the EU novels he even had Maul cloned and brought back to fight Vader to determine which one was the more worthy to serve as his apprentice. Hell, in Shadows of the Empire Vader could have easily been replaced by the non-Forceable Prince Xizor. What Palpatine wanted was galactic domination. Which he got and held onto for decades.

This is definitely one of WatchMojo's better & best lists ever, not a single complaint about any of these picks or honorable mentions plus I love that they included The Horned King from The Black Cauldron as well!!! Glad to see WatchMojo for once actually put real thought & research into a countdown because this one is really one of their very best :) I will say this however, I'm shocked that Voldemort from the Harry Potter film series was not included in this list as he is most certainly a villain famously destroyed in the end by the very power he obsessively sought!!! Voldemort should've at least been an honorable mention!!! Also, Neville Sinclair from The Rocketeer definitely fits the category of villains killed by the very power they lusted after but that's not actually Sinclair himself who is shown in the honorable mentions segment but rather his Frankenstein-like enforcer: Luther.

If you want to get technical about it, the one who actually killed Voldemort was Voldemort himself. The man died during his final confrontation against Harry Potter, in which they simultaneously cast their signature spells at each other, Voldemort casting the killing curse, Avada Kedavra, and Harry casting a mere disarming charm, Expelliarmus. However, since the wand Voldemort was using did not recognize Voldemort as it’s owner, nor was it willing to harm it’s true owner, Harry Potter, Voldemort’s curse faltered and rebounded on himself, killing him.

He also was the reason Harry survived in the end as Harry became a horcrux because Voldemort killed his parents. If Voldemort didn't try to kill him as a child Harry would have been killed by the first spell Voldemort made.

I'm gonna have to add Kratos to the list, and he's actually a repeat offender. The first time was when he let Ares fuel his ambition to the point he recklessly attacked temples of Athena. This led to Ares siccing him on his own family and ruining his life, making him "The Ghost of Sparta" without even dying first. If you follow the chronology, his efforts to break loose from Ares and get the Furies off his back led to his turning his back on the Elysian Fields and all hope of reuniting with them even in death. He starts conquering everyone else's territory again and gets stabbed and cast into Hades. He then fights out of that to defeat the fates, only to end up betrayed by the Titans he'd worked to save from the gods. When he avenges himself from them and -fianlly- kills Zeus, it leads him to have to stab himself, surrender hope, and drag himself away from Greece altogether

Slight inaccuracy in the Ark of the covenant not being Pandora's box. The real ark of the covenant could not even be touched or the offending person would die on the spot. If it was possessed by any nation other than Isreal then that nation would be racked by plauges, famines, madness, drought, and natural disasters. One account reports that one nation placed the Ark in the temple of their gods to show their pantheon had conquered the God of Isreal, they returned the next day to find all of the idols and alters in their temple crushes to Rubble, with the Ark still seated on its stand. They then returned the Ark.

+Sandro Munoz Voldemort didn't actually seek the power of the Hallows. He didn't know they existed (he was raised a muggle just like harry). The power he sought was the Elder Wand (which is well known as the most powerful wand in existence and has no pair) and the horcruxes (which would tie his soul to the world and allow him to return after being destroyed). He was still technically destroyed by the power he sought though.

1.) Red Skull isn't dead. He's revealed to still be alive in Infinity War 2.) You forgot Jafar's actual death, where, as a result of his wish to become a genie, his lamp is destroyed, thus killing him. 3.) So Gollum fell into lava fighting Frodo over the ring, and held onto it in his final moments. Does that really count as being killed by the ring? 4.) Voldemort and Lamia (from Stardust) should have at least got honorable mention here, since Voldy sought the Elder Wand which backfired on him, and Lamia sought to eat Yvaine's heart for eternal youth, and Yvaine destroyed her Though, props to getting Dietrich's name right and showing all three deaths, which the "Over the Top Villain Deaths" reviewer failed to do (calling Dietrich "Sallah" and only showing Toht's death)

Steven Johnston he was kind of a villain by the end of return of the king but he wasn’t a full villain like Sauron was. The ring “did” destroy him since his desire for it led to him fighting Frodo for it in mount doom and led to him falling into the lava with the ring

The one ring didn't just Kill Smeagol it really did destroy him. It disfigured him, he could no longer eat proper food, it made his life hell and stopped him from dying. The Ring was punishing Golem, because the Ring only loves its one true master.

Well, technically Gollum wasn't a villain before the ring came to him. So the top entry is actually the One Ring, not Gollum. The Ring sought the power to possess and corrupt which lead to that scene and it's undoing.

The issue I have with Sauron's inclusion is that it was his power in the first place. Yes, he was destroyed by trying to regain the power he had lost, so he could be included, but it's a slightly different case.

There was something very evil dominating everyone. Including Sauron and it was tied to that ring. Remember, the One Ring existed after Saurons Defeat. The other way around... not so much. That Ring was the one true Evil and the Dark Lord of Middelearth.

When Gollum hit that lava, if that were a real being hitting real lava he would've just smacked the surface and held there as his corpse caught fire. Lava is incredibly viscous and it takes a long time for things to sink into it, hitting it from that height would've been like landing on hard pavement.

He was still undone by the power he hoped to wield...he thought that being the most powerful sorcerer was enough, since he could pretty much do everything...and while he DID have the powers of a Genie, he was still bound by its rules, meaning he couldn't kill anyone, make anyone fall in love, or bring people back from the dead...which were things he could easily do while as a sorcerer ironically enough... (considering he used his magic to force Jasmine and the Sultan to bow before him...he could easily have 'enchanted' Jasmine to fall for him etc...)

Jafar even says "All the power in the universe, and I am bound by the rules of the Genie! Which means, I can't kill that upstart Aladdin...unless...I have someone arrange it for me..." And also in the end, Jafar creates that huge lava pit and the circumstance where Aladdin could possible perish (either by accident or his own hand), but Jafar can't do the deed by his own hand.

He didn't really get killed by the power of the dark side, but by vader throwing him into an abyss, no darkside energies directly involved there. You could argue that Vader belonged to the power set he sought, being the chosen one to bring balance to the force, but on the other hand, Sidious probably never believed in that prophecy, otherwise he would have sought to destroy him and not to turn him into his lackey. He thought of Vader as an extremely talented follower, but not as a power that he, the most powerful of the Sith, didn't have himself.

In the Honorable Mentions, the character of Neville Sinclair from "The Rocketeer" is not featured in the chosen scene, but his henchman Lothar. Sinclair was killed by the jet pack he attempted to steal from The Rocketeer when it exploded on his back.

Indiana Jones is the perfect example of a hero who has villains who get destroyed by the power they sought. Doctor Octopus sacrificed himself to the power he sought.
