The Renault "Le Car" was called the "5" in Europe, and they sold 5.5 MILLION of them. They rallied them with some success, and did a mental Turbo version that drove like a Scalectrix car! Utterly not one of the worst cars of the 80s.

My dad in the 90s bought a used Citation for only $100 but the speedometer didn't work and we later found out the carbon monoxide exhaust fumes were coming up into the car as well. A complete pile of shit car! He didn't even try to sell it. He put it in neutral and we pushed it into the woods and left it there!

A neighbor of mine had a Pontiac Phoenix and I remember getting into it and noting the sheer godawfulness of it. I'd been watching American cars decline in quality and performance all through the 1970s, but when I got into this and took a look at the dash and the interior I thought they had just given up trying all together. And the cheap ornamental chrome was just icing on the cake. If cars were homework assignments, this would be a book report you hand it in the morning it was due after staying up all night reading the book and then writing the report just before you fell asleep at 5:00 a.m.

Why is it every time people talk about the poor performance of American cars in the 1980s, they completely disregard everything after 1985 except the GN/GNX? 1987 Ford Mustang GT (5L) 0-60 in 6.1 seconds 1989 Turbo Trans Am 0-60 in 4.6 seconds (0.8 seconds faster than the GNX) 1990 IROC-Z (released in 1989) 0- 60mph in 5.7 seconds 1986 Omni GLHS 0-60 in 6.5 seconds 1989 Corvette ZR-1 0-60 in 4.9 seconds 1989 Taurus SHO 0-60 in 6.7 seconds (Compare that to the 2024 Malibu that does 0-60 in 7.8 seconds, or the 2024 Altima that does 0-60 in 8.4 seconds.) 1989 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe 0-60 in 6.9 seconds (only 0.3 seconds slower than the 2022 Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 automatics.)

As a guy who always had real Cadillacs,Devills,Sevilles,Eldorados,the Cim moran was to compact and that 1.8was a noisy gutlass wonder,if GM would have used the Celebrity/6000 platform instead of the J body it would have been a more appealing, better riding, and still a decent size for younger buyers,the other vehicle that every one thinks so poorly of the one of a kind Delorian,which to me is an icon of the eighties I remember looking at them at Reno Chrysler Plymouth back in 1981 with my family and seeing a work of art, I have driven a couple in the past and they are comfortable and an absolute pleasure to drive and wish I could afford one,a lot of people expected Lamborghini performance from this car because of the gullwing doors but it wasn't made or marketed as a supercar,the Delorian is a sporty touring car and still I think its 135 MPH top speed from a little Renault 3.0litre V6 back in 1981 is very impressive since very few cars made back then reached that speed.

The Yugo was built by a small car company in eastern block Europe with very little money for design and upgrades while all the rest were built by multi million car companies with giant engineering capabilities here in the USA. I still have my Yugo and it's never left me stranded with very little repairs needed while my high tech Toyota needed a new transmission and burns oil like crazy.
@ThreeWheelFlyer
@ThreeWheelFlyer 22 күн бұрын
Sounds like yours was actually maintained. The Yugo's biggest problem was American Laziness. The timing chain was supposed to be replaced every 60,000 miles, something that nobody ever bothered to do. As the Yugo was an interference engine, if that chain broke, the valves would slam into the piston, and cause the engine to lock up, not unlike an early 2000's Ford Focus. Meanwhile, you could easily find Zastava Corals (Yugo) as late as 2015 running the streets of Belgrade, Serbia. Ironically, the American Yugo was considered to be more well put together than the Zastava, as the company put more focus on building the export versions than they did for the domestic market. In some cases, zastavas would even be shipped out of the factory with mismatched door panels! Zastava was still building them in the eastern Bloc as late as 2008!

The delorean has to be the worst car of all time. It used the same engine as the Renault Alpine, but the Renault did 0-60 in 5.9 seconds, whereas the Delorean was 10.8- almost twice the time. Only a company owned by an American could manage this feat of backwards progress.

I have a DeLorean, 1982, and let me tell you… it’s junk mechanically. A friend and I added extra supports to the doors, because even the few times I drive it or open the doors, they will break the supports. The car handles >terribly< and I mean BAD. I often joke with people that Back to the Future used the DeLorean because Doc was always fixing it anyway. It’s fun as a collector’s piece and to give rides to people who love the movie, but as an automobile for any kind of usual use, no way. It’s cramped, handles poorly, and the seats must’ve been designed for short women because my head hits the roof over any bump as a 6’2 guy.

Honorable mention: 1982 Pontiac Trans Am It was a huge step down from the performance owners of the previous generation Trans Am were used to. Gone were the powerful 455 big block engines replaced with a weak 5.0 V8 known as the Crossfire. This engine utilized twin throttle bodies and was fuel injected. It produced a mere 165 horsepower which for Trans Am, a car with a rich history of high performance was an embarrassment. Not only was it a performance disappointment the crossfire engine was notorious for having mechanical problems. The lack of aftermarket parts meant that there was nothing that could be bolted on to increase its power output. The car was initially planned to receive a Pontiac turbo engine which would have produced more power however that plan was scrapped before the car went into production. The turbo hood scoop made it into production and served as a reminder of what could have been. The 1982 Trans Am interior was bland in comparison to the previous generation model. The bowling ball hubcaps that attached to the turbo fin wheels using plastic clamps often fell off due to road vibration. This was a very annoying problem which led to the wheels and hubcaps being discontinued after 1983. The overall design of the 1982 Trans Am was pleasing to look at however, the car was all show and no go. The TV series Knight Rider which debuted in September of 1982 featured a black 1982 Trans Am as KITT, a super car that could talk, drive itself and do other amazing things. It starred opposite actor David Hasselhoff until the show was cancelled in 1986 after 4 seasons. Knight Rider is credited with saving the 1982 Trans Am from being remembered as a complete flop. The TV series preserved the original factory look of the car and gave it icon status.

I think the click bait photo of the DeLorean would look way better if you showed it towing a Cybertruck back from the future 🤡

All cars in that Era sold in the US only had 85 MPH speedometers. It was thought if that was all that the speedo said people wouldn't go faster.

@@DecadesOfHistory20to correct your stupidity it was 8.8 seconds with the manual. 10 for the automatic. It was also 1.4 seconds slower than the Vette in 1981. You wanna knkw REALLY DeLorean history? Ask someone like me who has been around them for 35 years and daily drives a 82 model! Your "facts" aint worth shit!

It was rubbish. The only reason it is popular is because it was in a cheesy film.
