Here is how I look at the blue-shell. When the computer players use it, its the bane of my existence. However when I'm using it, its like a gift from God.

My problem with the coin is that is maxes out at 10, if you're going to have it as an item, don't cap it out at 10! If it was 99 or something then it'd be useful in first place because you could get so fast you start passing by last place racers and then if you get hit with a blue shell you're so far ahead that you can still be in first, and if you're past 12th place then the red shells could hit the wrong person.

When nico says it gives you no form of attacking for the boo. You can literally steal an item, and use it yourself.

It's worth noting the Blooper (or at least in MK8, dunno about others) greatly affects your enemies' grip, causing drifts to get really inefficient and make some of the more aggressive cart/character combos to drift off course. That's even more annoying threatening to me when I play rather than the ink it sprays.

the blue shell is a good item, and I'm saying that as a frontrunner. Not only does it help with rubber banding, it creates an opportunity for those who aren't frontrunning to catch up. Also its original purpose was to prevent weird crashes on N64 (something to do with AI distances, not quite sure).

I love the Blue Shell especially in MK Wii because it's so common. I love spending my races is 5th - 7th hitting players with Red Shells, POW's, and of course Blue Shells not to mension squish everyone with the Mega Mushroom then boosting to the top at the end.

Nice list. I clicked this video because I wanted to see blue shell at top of the list. It's extremely frustrating to see all the races where I was hit by a blue shell shortly in front of the finish line or even today in MKDD in multiple races where I was hit by two blue shells in a row. All these cases destroy minutes of winning achievement effort!! Except for Yoshi egg and the heart, I really second this list. In my experience the items from the Yoshi egg rather helped me than the opponent and the hearts allow you to collect special items from other players but cannot help against explosions. CPUs are usually too lazy to collect stars on the road. However, the POW-Block and Boo item are not as useless as you might think. The pow block makes all people lose their items which drive on the ground while the Boo let's you drive over grass and other terrain without slowing down (in MKDS). I would suggest the Tanooki Tail for 10th place instead.

I think everyone was expecting the blue shell to be on this list. I get a slight PTSD moment when that thing's let loose, so I somewhat pray, when I'm in first, that no one has the blue shell. Do any Mario Kart veterans or newcomers out there feel the same way about the blue shell?

The thing that bothers me about the heart power up that Peach and Daisy use in Double Dash is that it's overpowered. So basically you can win almost every race by just playing as Peach and Daisy.

The blue shell was more useful in Mario Kart 64. Instead of flying over everyone and hitting just the person im first place, in MK64, it actually slides on the ground and hits everyone in front of you.

I kind of see why the Yoshi Egg is on here. Two of the items it releases are a Mushroom and a Star, and the opponent you hit can pick it up. However, it also releases three other items, which are a Green Shell, a Banana, and a Bob-omb. It's an okay item, I suppose.

I really don't hate the blue shell as much as everyone else, and I've taken *a lot* of them. The thing I don't like is when they cause you to lose at the last possible second of a race. THAT is when it crosses the line into my dislike list. It's good for when the leader is far ahead, as it can set them back a bit, which is why I disagree with number 1.

Here is my list for the Top 10 WORST Mario Kart Items. #10: Blue Spiny Shell (this isn't a bad item, but it doesn't really help the user that much, considering you typically receive this item when you're near the back of the pack.) #9: Fireball (again, not a bad item, but the fireballs don't really travel that far, and they disappear rather quickly.) #8: Super Leaf (I like the idea of having a tail to block incoming items and flip over other players, but the range is too small, and it takes up an item slot.) #7: Green Shell (although mediocre, it serves its purpose to block incoming items, and it flips over players, making it slightly better than the Banana.) #6: Banana (is mediocre, but it does serve its purpose in protecting you from incoming items. The problem is that it is too small of an obstacle. Its effectiveness depends on the game, but it is usually the least effective item.) #5: Bob-omb (is too hard to aim and can be a pain to use. You can block items, but you have to drop the item at the correct timing to avoid getting caught in the explosion.) #4: Super Horn (is basically filler, as Mushroom boosting is a more skillful way of avoiding the Blue Spiny Shell.) #3: Fake Item Box (works in the exact same way a Banana does, only it doesn't block items. Is also easy to spot from the real ones depending on the game.) #2: Coin (There are Coins everywhere on the track, so getting a Coin as an item is pointless. It also doesn't protect you or give you a means of attack.) #1: Thunder Cloud (The only Mario Kart item that actively harms you more than it helps. It can also be hard to pass the cloud off to another racer, especially online. What's worse is the fact that you can obtain this item in the middle positions.)

In 200cc MK8DX the boo is actually very good. Often times you don't need a speed boost and if used lap 3 you can maybe get a shock dodge. In online it's also very helpful in the chaotic 3-8th placings where triple reds, fire flowers and piranha plants are common. The item you get from it doesn't even matter.

I couldn’t agree more about the blue shell. In mktour, the thing keeps on destroying me while I try to grind challenges. I’m about to email Nintendo telling them to remove that in the next update

Crash Team Racing's Warp Orb is basically a much better implementation of the Blue Shell concept in every way possible. Instead of just hitting whoever's in first the warp orb hits everyone in front of the player that used it. So rather than being useless for the person who used it and irritating for whoever's in first, it's now the best item to have while in last place while still adding randomness and causing chaos for the player in first.

The POW Block could have been at least a decent item, but one feature single handedly ruins it: the fact that you can shake the Wiimote to weaken the effect. It isn't a terrible item, it was just executed poorly.

Yep blue shell is a terrible item. Yes it attacks the 1st place player, but it doesn’t help you. Luckily they actually balanced it better in Mario Kart 8. It can hit other people along the way and you have 2 items to counter it instead of one. So blue shell is technically not as useful if you’re hitting 1st place player and might be more helpful to get ahead a couple places. Boo item is actually very good for an item. You might steal items, you turn invisible, and you’re invincible as well.

The yoshi eggs and the heart barriers are great items because the yoshi eggs are smarter than red shells and could drop a star, while the hearts can pick up other special items on the ground and protects u from the items.
