I’m from Birmingham, and I’ve never had any problems in these neighborhoods. I’m not saying crime doesn’t exist, it surely does, but to say they are extremely dangerous and make it sound like you could definitely be robbed is not accurate. Avondale has actually become a pricey, gentrified neighborhood, and it shouldn’t be on the list. Many houses in Avondale sell for 300k to 600 k. Avondale now has craft breweries and lots of nice restaurants. Birmingham itself has award winning restaurants (Beard awards) like “The Highlands” and “Hot and Hot Fish Club.” We also have Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, Mexican restaurants, etc. I’ve lived here all my life, for 67 years. We also have a Symphony Orchestra, a Civil Rights Museum, and many other attractions. I invite you to come stay a while longer, and you might see that Birmingham is just like any other city, yes, with crime and poverty, but so much to offer as well. And most of the heart of the city is clean and well kept, much more so than San Francisco when I visited there.

Dude, there's NO reason for anyone coming from the airport that's just visiting the city to venture off into these places you're speaking of! None at all. You're over-exaggerating. There's ONE road out of the airport and in 2 minutes, if you don't turn right or left, you'll come to the interstate going east or west. You'll have even more people scared to come here for no valid reason! Yes, the areas around the airport are bad (I would advise NOT stopping at the gas stations PAST the INTERSTATE unless absolutely necessary), but there's no reason for a visitor to have to even stop before they get on the interstate going to their destination or better parts of town! This part of the video and others should be amended.

I lived in Inglenook in 1974 as an eight year old child. I walked perhaps three blocks downhill to the elementary school, I used to play Tarzan by swinging on the vines or the hill down the street from my house and explore the old multi acre dump that had an entrance at the end of my road. Though just a child, I had a sense of the once lovely and safe area that Inglenook once was. I often walked to a little white neighborhood store building ( just over the hill from my house. I enjoyed my time there.

Just a few years ago I drove through Inglenook and was saddened by its decline. I passed by a lovely house a couple of blocks in front of the school and it had window bars on every window, I thought of how pitiful that the aged inhabitants of the home in this once quaint neighborhood now had to live as prisoners in their own home.

I grew up in Inglenook lived on 38th avenue in the 50's 60's and 70's went to inglenook school. The little store was top of the hill. We could walk to school and then took the public transportation bus to Phillips high school. Inglenook school has a reunion every couple years for anyone that went to inglenook. I played at the park that was across from my house. Was there when there was a big old house for arts and crafts then they tore it down. We felt safe then and played outside until dark. Sadly those days are gone in most neighborhoods. I have lived in Florida since 1980 and would love to come back home as that is where I will be buried.

The East lake comunity is turning around , housing values have doubled and tripled in just the last decade . Amazon just built a huge warehouse facility nearby. $18/hr jobs. Flippers have moved in and are making a fortune. Same wth the Northside, lots of activity, new football stadium, tons of investment money , housing prices skyrocketing. New construction projects in the Downtown area are everywhere. Birmingham is booming, . Yes there are pockets that still very bad, but it is not as you say.

Oh gosh, Gate City. On the Monday after my mom passed away, it was a sunny, beautiful spring day. It was March 25th, my aunt and two of my uncles went with me to arrange my mom's Memorial service. We had to go through Gate City to get to the funeral home. People were outside in the projects chillin', barbecuing, and just having a good time. When we drove back through two yours later, there were police cars, firetrucks, and an ambulance. My aunt's husband called a girl over and asked her what happened, she said, "That lady got shot." Two hours! Broad freakin' daylight in the middle of the day! Gate City is pretty damn rough and always has been! But Harris Homes, not too far away from Gate City, seems to be safer. My mom and aunt used to live in Smithfield. Nothing much happened there while they were there. I even lived there with them for about two months with my two kids back in 2005. In fact, Southtown (where I lived after that) was much worse than Smithfield. Shootings were so commonplace there, I stopped responding when I heard gunshots, unless they were nearby. My mom decided to move me and my kids into an apartment in a safer environment when I told her that a guy was killed directly across the street from me, and the girl next door had gunshots in her screen door. It took a year, but we got out. They're rebuilding Southtown now, though. Gentrifying it with the rest of the Southside/Avondale area.

Grew up in West End in the 60's, day and night difference. Stay away from Birmingham, there is no safe place in the city.

I’ve worked in Birmingham for 6 years but I try to stay in the area where UAB is at. I worked at a bank in ensley but I got out late one night then I noticed 15 cars and hella people hanging outside which made me nervous because they kept staring at me.
